Albeit it does seem as near as certain as can be.

 

Other circumstantial evidence is that their UK tour conveniently runs from 25 August to the Tuesday before the festival and they'd need a day off after playing 5 days in a row.

Maybe Simon reads Efests and realises its not a surprise so Geese will be in the next announcement as a "regular" act?

One is assumption, one is pretty near factual. Not only has no other name has been reliably whispered at all in the two and a half months since it was announced but we've also heard Cameron's playing a solo set.

The idea that Pulp, the biggest get EOTR has ever had, wouldn't end the night and Super Furry Animals, who are not being promoted as headliners, are, entirely because of a set idea someone made up thanks to some wording that the festival hasn't used, is silly. It's also reminiscent of when Green Man got Bicep a few years ago, put them in headliner size font on the poster, and a lot of people got it into their heads that there was no way they'd be playing in the Far Out tent and the festival had to have somehow secretly got an extension to their outdoor noise hours so they could go on after the listed headliners. (They played in the Far Out tent)

FWIW I just think "unusual" means they're going to throw in the odd live rarity for the occasion, certainly not do nothing but. It's a £300+ festival audience, just because it's the smallest they'll play (they're doing Wythenshaw Park the week before which is set up for nearly double EOTR's capacity) doesn't mean they'll play nothing anyone there knows.

...or (last thing on this, promise) it could be their last date of the More era so the first part of the set is them playing that in full.

 

I also have reason to believe they're playing the Sunday, so my theory SFA (already self-confirmed for then) are subbing them but with a headline length set holds water.

Yes to so many points. Frankly they’d get boo’d if they mostly played songs people have never heard!!

 

At same time, throwing in a few rarer numbers doesnt really match this description.

 

I think stripped back makes most sense. Also has advantage for the band of saving a few quid!

Really exciting line-up. A few acts I know, love, and haven't seen before (Mac, Kurt Vile, Caroline, YHWH Nailgun). A few names I've heard a couple tracks by and like what I hear (Gnod, Fine, OXN, Milkweed). And loads I haven't heard of that I'm excited to discover. A quick delve into the playlist has be most excited about Ak'Chamel The Giver of Illness. Hope their set is during the evening though, that'll be so atmospheric.

Beta Band are playing Manchester on the Saturday. Could do Thursday at EOTR. They just got announced for Beautiful Days.

 

Wilco in the area. Big ties to the festival. Played relatively recently but so did Ty Segall.

I think it will just be a slightly smaller band set up. Less staging, less accompanying musicians etc. Something like the Tiny Desk thing, although even that had nine of 'em. Doubt they'll do an rarities/b-sides etc. They've been around long enough and are savvy enough to know that's not going to be a crowd-pleasing move. And above all else, Pulp are a crowd-pleasing band.

I think it'll probably be a tighter line up. Your core 4, and Andrew and Emma. I think we could be shocked by what they throw in (Oh what I'd do for a His n Hers, TIH or We Love Life album track!!!)

I dont really see why they wouldnt be pre-announced ( and they are almost definitely doing Green man anyway)

 

The secret band wont be announced beforehand they said, will only know when onstage ( or when people see them a few hours before lol). So Geese make sense due to the reading and leeds aspect.

Not sure what has been rumoured in relation to this - is the rumour he is doing a regular set or one of the secret piano stage sets? Hopefully a regular set.

Suspect people reading way too much into this Pulp copy... it'll likely be all the hits plus a couple of rarities, maybe a guest or two and some covers...

The thing with the Pulp post (and honestly my last thought on the topic) is that it was a message to their 178k followers who each time there is a new post are hoping it is a 40k+ festival within 2 countries of them. 'Unusual' as a word feels very Pulp. For their fanbase seeing that announcement, seeing that poster, Pulp being on it is the 'unusual' bit. It was not a post targeting attendees of or even repeated by eotr festival, it was aimed at Pulp fans on their account.

Imagine (god help us) Oasis headlining, it could have read 'a fookin special festival for a fookin special band for a fookin special show'. This doesn't mean that they'll do a special show. It means the fact it exists is in itself special/unusual.

Adam Betts is in the lineup with Colossal Squid, so I think he’s a show-in (a touring member of the band).
