The Deep Blue are a revelation 😍

I had a listen to a few acts I didn't know last night and liked these a lot.  Reminded me of one of mine & Mrs 4AM's favourite acts -Joseph.  Both acts with great female voices/harmonies.

Leftfield??

But maybe it's just the solo slot. He has a lot going on over the next while.

Yeah potentially - just seems odd given there's a new album coming and how aggressively he tends to promote these things. That said, seems a fair few of his summer festival shows are solo gigs so maybe the band are taking some time off.

Can’t find any set lists for her. Does she do much All Saints stuff or any of the songs she’s written for others?

Her first solo gig is next month at Jazz Cafe. She's then got Mighty Hoopla and a gig with Sugababes & Melanie C before Glasto so we'll know what her setlists are looking like then.

New single with Shola Ama & General Levy is a banger though.

Trying to figure out where/when a full band show might fit in elsewhere on the lineup (if anywhere), as feels odd for him to be there solely for a relatively low-key solo slot.

Leftfield headliner or halfway down Other (plenty of bands somewhere around there don't make the first poster).

Having said that there's no other band activity around that time and it's right after a big US tour. Plus he's a big fan of live music in general - may just be a case of the tour dates lining up and him fancying going to Glastonbury this year.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't pop up somewhere at Leftfield and/or Strummerville anyway considering he'll be on site

I instantly thought "British Haim".

They did. They have a residency at deva fest “sailors rest”. About 5 shows a day. They are great.

The Mrs spoke to them and told them

we saw them at Glasto (after seeeing them the year before at deva fest too). Told her to get a selfie- she obliged!

if you haven’t seen them you should! Think sea shanty’s (duh) and lots of Irish songs.

Ah OK thanks for confirming.  I did think it was them but I've just looked back on the one photo I have and there's not as many band members as in the above picture, although lots of beards and flat caps are present.

They were good fun, definitely worth another watch.

Given the fuss about Frank Turner’s politics a few years back I’d be surprised if he plays Leftfield…

Hate to make you feel old but that was 12 years ago.

He's played Leftfield at least twice since and toured with Billy Bragg.

Very similar to The Staves as well (who are still missing from the lineup..)

I saw The Deep Blue at All Points East in 2022 and they were not very good, didn't sound much like the recordings. Early days though so may have improved since then.

Kingfishr, on the other hand, I thought were naff on record but really enjoyable live at Barn on the Farm. It's a bit sub-Mumford/Bear's Den but they do it well.

And it was also people choosing to take issue with his (arguably clumsy) wording, rather than looking at the actual point he was making.

12 years ago. Bloody hell. For clarity, I was thinking Leftfield wouldn’t book Frank, rather than Frank wouldn’t play Leftfield. But it seems Leftfield/Billy did indeed look past the clumsy wording.

What did he say?

"To start with, most people don't seem to understand what the difference between left and right is. For example, the BNP are a hard left party. I consider myself a libertarian, I consider myself to be pretty right wing and I get sh*t for saying that out loud. I was thinking about it the other day, I was thinking about how, quite often, I do keep myself to myself on the subject because I can't be f**king bothered to have some guy look all shocked at me because I think socialism's retarded." (moonandbackmusic.com, December 2009)

"I do firmly believe that leftist politics lead to the misery of many, the crushing of the little guy and all that kind of thing. I mean, it's important for me to say that in public because I believe it strongly and that sometimes in life you've got to f**king put your foot down." (Source as above)

"I think, arguably, particularly with the signing of the Lisbon treaty it's actually the end of about 800 years of continuous parliamentary history. I think the people responsible for the signing of that f**king treaty without asking the people of Britain need to burn in f**king hell." (Source as above)

"Delving into political philosophy here, but I get very frustrated with people who publicly have issues with private companies and then have no problem at all with the state funding stuff. The bottom line is the British Film Council gets its money out of threat of violence towards citizens, which is why it's infinitely worse than money that comes from some fizzy drink. At the end of the day, I don't actually give a sh*t, but if you made me choose between those two methods I think that state funding is much more of a greater evil on society. Those are my politics … I've got no problem with using taxes to pay for essential things like defence or the basics of a healthcare system. But whether or not we're threatened with the removal of our liberty to pay for someone to make a film, I personally struggle with." (huckmagazine.com, March 2011)

Working my way through the cts I don't know on the poster and liking more than I don't.  Baby Queen, Cut Capers, The Deep Blue particularly caught my ear.  Cut Capers particularly sound like they could be a lot of fun live.  In addition to the acts I knew/liked anyway I think that's up to about 12 at just this one stage.  Can see me spending a LOT of time at Avalon this year.

I'm 90% sure I've seen Cut Capers at a festival somewhere and if it's who I'm thinking of then a lot of fun live is a great description

How many sets do we think Frank Turner will end up doing in total?

He managed 5 last time he played (in 2019) - Avalon, Strummerville, Greenpeace, BBC Introducing and the Stone Circle - only the first of which was billed when the full lineup initially came out.

He's also now going for a world record in May - 15 gigs (in different cities) in 24 hours.

I reckon somewhere, there's a man in his early 40s Googling "what's the most anybody has played at Glastonbury in the same year", and thinking about how to beat that....

Think first three are a given again this year. I'd add a Leftfield appearance (maybe as part of one of Billy Bragg's Radical Round-Ups rather than an outright slot) and still feel like there should be a full band slot somewhere on one of the main five stages (maybe early on Other) - the man's an endless promoter and not sure acoustic is the best way to plug his new album.

Not sure he'll beat 5 shows in total but if he's got the whole weekend free I could also see him popping up at points with acts he's mates with (Beans on Toast, Grace Petrie, Lottery Winners if they're there) and joining for a song or two.
