Definitely.

I'd really like Rayner to be PM, but she's unpopular, and she knows it...so yeah get behind Burnham.

Seems the play here is for Burnham to offer Starmer foreign secretary for offering a route back and blocking Streeting.

Big speech for Starmer today.

4 things could happen I reckon...

1. he nails it with the speech of the century and the party unites behind Starmervision.

2. it's all a bit meh but no move is made this week or until or until the King's speech and maybe Burnham gets himself a seat to stand in and then it's a waiting game

3. sh*t speech and Streeting, Rayner and co go for it.

4. he outlines in speech that he will stand down before next election but they need an ordered transition, and Burnham should be allowed to stand.

I don't understand a central part of the pitch being about closer alignment with the EU.

Give the easiest ammunition for the Tories and Reform to scream that he is anti democracy and and wants to rip up Brexit - alienating half the population.

Whilst not going far enough with Remain voters - feels like the status quo so won't change their minds.

well, what can you do? We would still be out of the EU, it was never asked in the referendum what sort of brexit it would be, but fact is that big EU thing is still there just next door, and now there's Trump and Putin and suddenly european unity looks maybe a good idea.

A majority now think brexit was a mistake according to polls, but manifesto red lines mean they can't actually do that much. Wouldn't be surprised if there was something about rejoining CU/SM/EU in next labour manifesto.

I agree with you.

I'm just saying it's an easy attack line for Reform and Tories to say Labour is anti-democracy.
They could pull it off when they are at the peak of popularity but Starmer definitely can't make the case for it now he is so weak.

it is, but they need a dividing line. Can't just keep uturning cause worried what opposition or press say. Same with net zero.

Just take it on.

Has any Minister or MP actually praised this speech? Why isn't there an orchestrated show of support?

Good point! I thought this is what the whips were for.

It's impossible to see him recovering from this total humiliation.

Mahmood probably will, because she's intrinsically linked to Starmerism and noone else will give her a similarly big job. Even the slimy toad is astute enough to know that if he's going to have any hint of pivot the home office messaging needs to change.
