Live gigs - Who you've seen were they good, bad etc.

Lambrini Girls Gorila, fantastically chaotic. Band in the crowd, on top the crowd, a human pyramid an option of a cartwheel competition. Nightmareish scenes for whoever was in charge of health and safety at the venue probably having a hard time watching. 

 

Recommended. 

 

Cost only around £20 as well!!

Frank Turner at the Cambridge Corn Exchange last night

 

Was a very nice night out, although a part of me wonders if I should've pushed my friend to commit to Birmingham or Oxford as I prefer those venues and there were a few moments where I couldn't really make out what was being sung.

I was there too and fully echo this! Particularly the health and safety point, I swear the lead singer was inches from smashing her head open on the floor at one point after losing her balance atop the crowd.

 

But yeah great gig, amazing energy from the band and the crowd. They've already booked in a tour later in the year in bigger venues, I'd highly recommend catching them.

 

Also a shout out to support act Loose Articles, really fun local punk band that were the perfect start to proceedings.

Yeah caught the last 3 LA songs were good fun. Their singer also nearly came a cropper at the end when she jumped into the crowd before anyone was ready with 2 or 3 already surfing. 

 

As I was carrying an injury had to stick to the slim safe zone at the edges. I think there will be some bruised people this morning. 

 

Although i will say crowd was very respectfully in snapping into safety mode when people did go down.

Sensible move with an injury! I was in the thick of it (maybe unwisely as I'm constantly wondering whether I'm getting too old for moshing...) but I'm surprisingly unbruised today. It was super energetic but nowhere near aggressive or violent, basically the ideal pit imho.

I'm meant to be seeing Beck in London on Saturday but I'm still yet to get my ticket at a show that is still using physical tickets rather PDFs or apps like I'm used to. Like they're out of experience getting these sent in time or something.

same for me - most of the time these days I find myself either upstairs or at the back for bands I would have previously been down the front (or jumping off stage) for...  

 

couple of times recently I couldn't take it and had to give in - Napalm Death for example I forgot I was middle aged and behaved like my 17 year old self would have... I paid for that the next day I can tell you...

Been a bust few nights for me, Friday Manics at Sheperds Bush Empire and Ghost tonight at the O2. Both great sets but have to say tht Ghgost were at another level, mind-blowingly good. Could see them headlining Download soon and would love an outdoor London show.

Not really a gig but went to the Confidence Man & Jimmy Cauty immersive art Emergency Chill Clinic yesterday. Won't go into it too much now in case anyone else has a ticket for the last 2 days as it'll ruin the suprise and fun (will update with sneaky photos on Tues as cameras are meant to be banned) but absolutely extraordinary. Full on medical ward, beds, doctors and nurses etc. And a great 23 minute films from Con Man and Cauty with a chill out remix of 3AM. 

 

You have to fill out a form when you get there for starters..

I can't see how they can do it at Glasto but it would be amazing if they could. In the old days of SE micro venues, it would have been perfect as a hidden venue.

Man not cool, if an artist as specifically asked for no cameras, it can't be that hard to not be so disrespectful to deliberately go against their wishes 😞

Saw the Murder Capital at NCH good show, becoming a fan of that venue. (Apart from the bottleneck at the entrance to the men's toilets) 

 

Only thing of note with exceptions if the The Fall and words lost meaning i think a fair few of other  the new album tracks fell a bit flat and I guess they won't stick around in the setlist after this tour. 

 

Maybe a Leftfield headliner?

Calm down, the whole thing is a spoof just like your not allowed cameras in hospital. But that's why I'm not posting photos until it's over on Monday so nothing is spoiled, which is their main thing about no photos. They had a press launch too and it's been in national press and lots over social media.

Well, turns out I had no issues getting new ones and going. Helped I was mostly over an illness I'd had most of the week.

 

Gig was fun. I'm more of a casual Beck fan so would've liked E-Pro at least, but the main show with the BBC Orchestra was really impressive. 

 

I think this was also my first time seeing a gig with an orchestra so that was fun too. I mean, I've seen things with string sections but not quite a full 50+ piece treasure trove of strings and brass.

Going to that in London on Thursday, whilst the last album is fine I don’t think it gets near the first two so that doesn’t surprise me. Early Woodside seems to fit but they played that slot 2 years ago so maybe they are just not at the farm this year

Shelter - London on Friday

 

absolutely brilliant - the show was billed as "30 years of Mantra" and that's exactly what it was, a celebration of that truly wonderful album. the last time i saw Shelter live was actually very close to 30 years ago and it was one of the best shows i ever went to - this was great too, but in a different way, a lot of time has passed and this was a celebration rather than a battle cry, but it was really great.

 

i got there halfway through the support band who unfortunately were sh*t - typical stereotype holier-than-thou wannabe hardcore. shite.

then after Shelter i headed off to Earth for a session with one of my favourite sounds - Aba Shanti

 

i had never been to Earth before, seems like a great little venue i think.

 

this was my first time seeing Abi since University of Dub closed down a while back - and he didn't disappoint, a truly wonderful evening. my only wish really is that the dance ran until 6 instead of 3...

Saw Ghost on Sunday night. Went for my partner as she is a big fan. Birmingham arena been a few times before and not had an issue getting in but on Sunday it was awful. So bad they delayed Ghost starting by half an hour. Security seemed so slow getting people in. it was a no phone gig but that didn't seem the issue.

The actual concert i could enjoy the visuals and the performances even if the music was not my bag. The crowd was great really up for it signing back pretty much every  song new and old

Latest to join the Ghost discussion. Saw the tour opener in Manchester - didn't have an issue with the no-phone rule, and must admit that a 2000 start and 2150 finish ensured fabulous smooth running to get home and be in bed back in West Yorkshire before midnight.

 

My gripe would come from the price - paid the second-cheapest bracket, and didn't necessarily feel that I'd come away with my money's worth at just 110 minutes, especially when there could be two-or-three-minute longueurs for costume changes and the like.

 

But as a live act out-and-out, they are genuinely terrific; both fabulously camp as entertainment, but also gloriously drilled as an arena proposition without it seeming too inorganically existent.

 

It will take something significant - like the accusations against Forge over his failure to part ways with a Ghoul accused online of some numerous matters to go particularly public - to check momentum now. Download 2026 please, and would concur that a London outdoor show would be a treat - though I'd struggle to see them shift a BST date. Perhaps a 40,000 one-off at Finsbury with a corking bill could do the trick.

Misty in Roots at Cheltenham Jazz Festival tonight. Haven't seen them live for 25 years so wasn't sure what to expect from a bunch of old men - by christ, they were absolutely magnificent! My feet are aching from dancing.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Chicago…have seen the Wild God tour previously in Dublin, but smaller venue in Chicago was superb. Immense as always (yes, they could headline the pyramid!)…
