One thing that’s surely got to be factored are the other farms that are used Steanbow etc.  Whilst I’m no farmer I’d imagine they all  have to plan what they want to plant (if anything)  or do with the land for the following year along with applying for grants etc If available to maximise their income as they would on a fallow year without the income they all get from GFL. If the festival call it late they’d surely be duty bound to pay them.

I’m starting to think it’ll be called this year ☹️

That's a great point, and illustrative of how the more you look at the situation, the more difficult it gets.

I've got to say, my pessimism has increased considerably recently. I really thought it was more likely than not that we'd have a vaccine being rolled out this year, but I suspect I was kidding myself all along.

We all thought this year's would go ahead at the beginning of March!

Still don't buy the narrative of "vaccine or bust". If we discover another treatment or two that brings down the mortality rate to an acceptable level (as in, what the govt deems acceptable), things will start to get back to normal, or if we have a big development in speed and ease of testing.

A vaccine isn't a guarantee, and things will obviously return back to normal at some point either way. And IF events like Glastonbury cannot go ahead without a vaccine, I strongly suspect it'll be a case of the most vulnerable need to be vaccinated, not the whole/significant portion of the population. Then everyone else can resume normal life at their own risk.

The way I see it, the way out of Covid is immunising/being able to successfully treat the people most at risk from the disease - it's not exactly about immunising the entire population.

It's the timescales though, isn't it?  Someone is going to have to make a call on all this very soon to get the festival wheels in motion for next summer.

I'm glad it's not my call, but if it was I know what I'd do.

I tend to lurch from optimism to pessimism and back again on a daily basis. If no Glasto next year that basically means most if not all festivals and arena gigs also not happening. At the moment I am riding the optimism train, maybe because the idea of almost two years without live gigs is unthinkable. The effect that would have on the music industry would be devastating, it already is bad enough.

I disagree on this one. Glastonbury is particularly vulnerable because of its huge size, early date and duration. For instance a 5000 attendance day festival in August bank holiday is very likely to be fine, but not only is Glastonbury a couple of months earlier, but it's huge and very long.

Basically, as far as festivals go, Glastonbury has everything going against it, I can't think of an earlier*, larger or longer festival.

* There are earlier festivals, but as far as I know they're all pretty small.

Ah, remember the poll results! More in desperate hope than expectation!

I take no pride in being one who voted that it would definitely be off.

I remember one of the early posts in that thread saying that if Glastonbury was to be called off, we'd all have much bigger things to worry about anyway.  And as much as I'd love to be there next year, and spend plenty of time on this forum, whether Glastonbury actually happens next year is still way down my list of priorities for the time being.

I think I've had to resign myself to Glastonbury not happening next year, I've been feeling this way for a few months. I agree with @jparx that I don't think Covid requires a "vaccinate everybody" approach in order to be deemed 'over', but I'm just wary that the festival isn't responsible for making that decision for the whole country. The festival will only be permissible if similar events are permissible, and when will similar events be deemed permissible? We can no longer say "Glasto's still a year away". It's almost September and we've yet to see how the country gets through winter with this thing.

All I am hoping for at this time, is that those of us with tickets will still have the chance to attend the next festival. If they wanted our full payment early in order to keep some things moving then I would gladly pay up. If they needed to hike up the price I'd be fine with it. But these are the thoughts of a woman clutching at straws, feeling quite flat and deflated by the whole situation.

I was certainly in denial about that one. I was adamant that there couldn't be anything worse than Glastonbury being cancelled. Well, I had to dissolve my business* and I haven't been to the pub (meals with the family aside) since February, and I've not been swimming or seen my family etc...

So, yeah. I guess there has been more to worry about!

* I've been lucky enough to get a job on a WFH contract, so winding down the freelancing isn't as bad as it sounds 🙂

You have a valid point there, and reluctantly I agree with it

Yeah, that one was me.  And stand by it, as much as I wanna go to Glastonbury next year I'm more worried by the fact that I won't have been able to hug my parents for over a year by that point :(

That's good to hear.  We're focussed on our business surviving through to next summer - the business plan has changed so many time this year!  So far so good I suppose as we've been essentially full since we reopened, but making a living by inviting strangers to stay in your home does come with certain anxieties.  And a lot of cleaning.  Lots and lots of cleaning!

I'm optimistic there's still time available to allow events to occur which will enable the 2021 fest to go ahead and believe events management are still of this mind set. The question for me is what sacrifices may be need to have it go ahead. If Covid 19 is still circulating next year, as nearly all experts agree, then it comes down to mitigation methods, mainly vaccination.

There is still time for a vaccine to be approved and an innoculation program to begin. Methods of certifying vaccination could also be established. However not every festival participant who requires vaccination by summer 2021 may get it and as a consequence they could be disqualified from attending/performing/working.

I think that's going to end up being the case. Seen a few boffins saying that this is one of those things that's going to be around ad infinitum, so it's going to be as much around gradual development of resistance and improved treatment to reduce the seriousness of catching it, supported by vaccination programmes.

I hate people who say crap like "it's only the flu" because it clearly bloody isn't, but equally I do struggle to envisage the world continuing to be fucked and under lockdowns and quarantines for this for another year.

Absolutely. There's a tipping point between saving as many lives as possible, and then the reality of what we're actually left with if we're under various regulations for the next few years. This is why I think we're a treatment or two, or a significant jump in testing, from unlocking the puzzle. I'm glad I don't have to make these decisions, but there will be a point where governments decide if a certain mortality rate is worth normality. And the further we get in to a recession, the sooner that decision will happen.

I've said it many times, but back in April I thought there was ZERO chance we'd be going to restaurants and pubs until the Autumn, and foreign holidays would be impossible until 2021 at least. Both of those things were possible in July.

I do remain pessimistic about Glastonbury (and tbf, it's dropped WAY down my list of concerns recently), but equally I was pessimistic about pubs/restaurants/holidays and turned out to be wrong.

Not sure how expensive it would be and I imagine I’m in dreamland but those anti-bac sprays the basketballers were walking through... Could they be dotted around the site at major events?like Glastonbury? Would that even help?

Or seed the clouds with it and hope for a wet festival. ! That would make the weather thread interesting and unique, or Michael could just fly over the site with one of those crop sprayers they use in the States😁
