I don't expect huge changes but I do expect outdoor socialising will be commonplace through the rest of the year, we do deserve something good after putting up with this government's bullshit 😂

Also a scientist being interviewed on the news seems to suggest full long scale lockdowns wont happen anymore but we may see short sharp ones like what we've seen in New Zealand and Australia which I'd say it manageable

Meeting one other person to socialise rather than exercise isn’t a relaxation in any way at all. If I want to see someone now, all I have to do is go for a walk with them. Like others, I’ve followed every rule all the way, but I’m severely going to be tested soon.

I get that people are frustrated with the pace - and I don't mean to give the government any credit - but we've heard repeatedly that it would take months to get back to normal, that vaccines alone aren't a silver bullet, that some restrictions would be in place over the summer, that foreign holidays weren't realistic for summer 2021, that mass events would be autumn at the earliest. It's all playing out as expected this year.

Well, I didn't see my parents at Christmas. I haven't seen my parents since August 9th. If we had known we would be no closer to being allowed to see each other in April ... well, we might have done Christmas differently. Or probably not, because the whole way through we've been trying to do "the right thing". Well it's sure as fuck not the right thing for us. 

 

yeah I was probably one of them...sorry! But the Kent variant and then worry about other variants have changed things, we didn't know about this back in mid December (the govt did, not the public), and the case rate started to go through the roof over christmas and new year.

That seems very cautious and probably what we need to be doing right now. If they go ahead with this then I don’t see how we would need another lockdown. Bear in mind that this is another leak and the plans won’t be finalised till over this weekend they might very well change but all the recent leaks do indicate a slow, cautious approach which I feel is needed.

ok, but when you posted that most people seemed to be pretty happy with it....or is it the household meeting thing that is pissing everyone off, and the fact we're getting all this good news about vaccines?

I’m convinced they know that people are going to break the rules and start seeing friends/family indoors soon - they are just playing their cards close, so they can always say ‘well we didn’t allow for mixing in our roadmap’ if the cases start rising again.

Indeed, this is what some of the experts at the briefings were saying would happen and by summertime we should be seeing a near normality, they have to go to slowly just so we don’t risk another lockdown.

I get this, but what would lead to another lockdown? Because it’s now almost guaranteed that deaths and hospitalisations are going to be nowhere near the levels we saw either last April, or January just gone. And it was those escalating figures that needed controlling and therefore made the lockdowns a necessity.

The issue is that the two household meetings in April still need to be outdoors. Make them indoors and then we’re on to something.

But that’s the whole point we don’t know for sure yet what will happen with more things open and more households able to meet. So if what we are seeing is correct they will feel we need to go slowly so we can monitor the situation, rather than loosening too much and then have to reign some things back in. They need to get schools back so then see what happens, loosen a bit further and see the impacts of that. They appear to be learning from their previous mistakes which we’ve be asking them to do.

Yeah it seems stupid to restrict people when 25% of the population will have VERY good protection in 21 days time.  And these are 25% of the most vulnerable.

Also think the briefing from the zero covid lockdown ultras are getting precedence. Saying we need social distancing after the vaccination programme is done is ridiculous

Yeah that’s what’s irritated me.

I’m broadly on board with everything else mooted, April for shops, June for indoors rule of six kinda stuff, but not allowing two households to meet outside for another 6/7 weeks isn’t good enough. I’m happy to be cautious, but equally being too cautious comes with a huge cost as well.

well, we still don't know what is in the roadmap...maybe there will be some flexibility in there if things look a lot better in a month (probably won't be, as that will mean Johnson having to go through all this with his backbenchers again).
