T-Day - Fair ticket sales within groups

Hi guys!

First time poster, long time attendee of the festival. So far been 6 times and attended plenty of Pilton parties!

We have a situation this year - 7 close friends want tickets to the festival. This is a problem because I believe the ticket limit is currently 6. This means, inevitably that someone will be left out if we reach the ticketing page. I know we could go back for them later in the general sale or resale, but this could be a rare occurrence given that Glastonbury had a year off. All of my friends will be trying intensely for tickets in both the coach and general sales.

My question is this - how do you choose which friend may NOT get a ticket, and how do you tell that friend? Would you sacrifice your own ticket?

OR how do you separate your group to make this fair on everyone?

I'm just interested in how the community thinks - most likely I'd sacrifice my own ticket as i've been a few times before.

Quickly try and make five new friends in the next four weeks?

Honestly?  Options:

  • Divide the group into a 4 and a 3 (or a 5 and a 2) who would all happily go as their own group.  Let's be honest, most groups of friends have fairly obvious degrees of closeness within them.  In no large group are all friends equal.
  • Would one of you be happy to (a) miss out or (b) go alone? In which case you do it as a 6 and a 1, but accept that there's equally a risk that 6 of you miss out and only 1 goes.  Cos I'll be honest, if I was identified as the one to miss out it's entirely possible I'd be bloody minded and just sort myself out if I got to the ticket page. Be prepared for that.
  • Maintain an active working WhatsApp group. If someone gets through then everyone can then focus on however many are still outstanding.

Let's not lie, this can be a test of friendships!

We have this problem too.

We have 13 all together this year.

2 of them are my brother in law and his girlfriend who are still undecided if to go or not yet.

Even though they're family I will prioritise them last.... especially after last year he couldn't be bothered to wake up and try for the group.

As mentioned above, could you split into a 3 and a 4? Then as soon as one group is sorted, you switch to everyone trying for the 2nd group.

If youre doing this then you need to think about those who you know will be trying, would be rubbish if I got split into a group with people I know wouldnt be trying that much.

Or you could try and stick the other person in another group, Im sure you could 5 people on here or friend of friends would wouldnt mind the extra  pair of hands.

I would split into a 4 and a 3 to make it fair however i've had friends who didn't even bother to wake up and try in previous years who suddenly have decided that they want to go. After i failed to get tickets that year and to learn that they didn't even try they can get to fu*k will i be trying for them!

But....Splitting into two groups of 3 and 4 reduces the chances of maximising success, much better once someone is on the ticket page to enter the maximum, 6.

Find some reliable people to help. Remember it doesn't have to be ones hoping to go to the festival, they can just act as the lead buyer, aim to get as many friends/family to help so even if you have to split into 2 groups you've not reduced your chances.

It does, but it also minimises the chances of wrecking friendships by being the one who's left on their tod!

Lots of interesting opinions here - thanks guys, obviously a great community. I think it's certainly correct that those aren't trying should be first to lose out.

An idea I had was each person who got through would get everyone (but one person) a ticket. for example:

Person 1 won't get a ticket for Person 3

Person 2 won't get a ticket for Person 1

Person 3 won't get a ticket for Person 2

etc...

As our 7th person hasn't been before, i've made him exempt from the above as that seems fair to me.

That's a pretty great idea! What a nice friend you must be :)

On a different note, do you know anyone else at all that is going? Even if you're not great friends, you could try some merging of groups? If you know a foursome or whatever - and then ideally if everyone can try for both groups, giving priority to their own group first. Probably still not as fair as your way, but at least the final 7th person has an equally high shot of getting a ticket as anyone else.

Does it make me a bad person that my first thought was "how can I rig that scenario to ensure I don't miss out?"?

That’s a conundrum alright. My first thought was the 2 groups of 3 and 4 but as Avalon quite rightly points out, if you’re on the page you may as well use every slot. I think all being connected by WhatsApp or similar is definitely the way to go on the off chance that 2 of you get through at the same time.

I definitely don't recommend that approach. You're inserting the need to communicate and regroup more than you should which could slow you down / trip you up especially if you've got 2 people getting through at once and you need to clarify or double check which person still needs a ticket. I'd suggest having a defined, static Group A and Group B is probably easier to manage.

The one person who is left has a decent chance anyway as once they are through they only need to enter 1 set of details to get the tickets therefore eliminating the risk of errors and speeding up the process  , they then would have the 6 people trying in the remainder of the main sale and then the resale .... or everyone tries to get them a coach ticket 7 attempts ..... and the group of 6 a ticket in the mains sale 7 attempts .... this makes sense to me in my head :)

So I’m one of the guys in this group going and I think the plan with the people not getting tickets for a random person in the group is best. Seems fair and the other person would then get a Sunday ticket so they are not completely missing out if we don’t manage to get back in again. By the way discgoesmic, I’m making paella after we get our tickets to celebrate ? can’t wait for Glasto next year!!!

Be honest now, would you happily leave @discgoesmic out of the ticket run?  You can be honest here, it's a safe space

Thought I'd found a flaw with this, but I hadn't. You will have to include person 7 in it though, otherwise someone else has to be missed out twice. Good luck!
