Good shout actually. Stuck Soulwax in their Park slot and moved Moderat to replace The Hives as a JP sub below RTJ.

Been through and replaced all the acts I was predicting who aren't actually touring or in the area around Glasto. Wasn't sure which of Moderat/Soulwax to put on Friday Park and which to leave for Silver Hayes but plumped for Moderat in the end (I wanted an electronic option on one of the main stages that night). Also couldn't be arsed to try and reshuffle to fit BadBadNotGood and Ibibio Sound Machine onto another stage to avoid them both returning to play WH again.

Not highlighted all that I've wanted but it's a line-up that's fairly strong there, laddie. There's perhaps not as much for me as I'd hope - but then, that could be a good thing for avoiding clashes.

Judas Priest would be great in the rock slot. They still get booked in pretty high slots at rock/metal festivals so I dunno if they would want to take the late afternoon Friday slot. Guess it depends whether or not they want to tick that off their bucket list.

Halford said - waaaay back in '14 - as they came out of live retirement that they felt British metal should have been more fairly represented at Glastonbury and that the band would love to play. The only festival year they've been touring around was '15 - when I believe Download had them as an exclusive sub.

It's an interesting one - unlike Metallica, who happily lowered their fees just for the chance to play (as far as I'm aware), Priest could still demand something closer to headliner price, given that they remain a European and US arena act (if not a consistently successful one in the latter). However, they're on record saying they'd like to carry the flag for British metal there so...

If Priest are inactive this year, then definitely not - but if they're touring in '19, on the back of their new record and the 50th Anniversary, they seem a no-brainer booking for me, in either Friday afternoon slot or even an Other headliner, judging on who else plays.

Judas Priest aren't gonna play Glastonbury. They're neither the household name that both Motorhead and ZZ Top are nor do they have the well known tunes, and I think they've dated pretty badly tbh which probably holds them back the most. Not a clue who's gonna be in that Friday Pyramid slot (if they continue to do it) but it sure ain't gonna be them.

Other headline a long slot - but third on the Friday appears to be a thing. Jess Glynne undoubtedly a bigger live pull than ZZ Top last year, but she was underneath them. Mary J Blige arguably bigger than Motorhead too - but she also was fourth down. I'm just extrapolating from precedent, here.

And Motohead haven't dated badly? Respectfully disagree FloorFiller - whilst I'm certain they won't be there this year, they've been carrying larger positions across both rock, metal and crossover festivals on both sides of the Atlantic for a longtime. ZZ Top are probably the ones with the larger worldwide legacy, I grant you - but Priest are definitely a bigger live pull than Motorhead were the last time round. Glastonbury was the reason Lemmy's final outing made the Top Ten - because Glastonbury pushed him back to the forefront of public consciousness.

I can't speak for Gnom, but I will be not in the arseless chaps this time round 

There's definitely an appetite for metal fans at Glasto - and within the metal community, Priest are legends. They'd pull a five-figure crowd, easily I reckon.

(How many did Motorhead pull? I didn't go that year and you seem to be a man in the know, CaledonianGonzo  )

Ask a casual music listener to name a Motorhead song and 9/10 will say Ace of Spades. Ask the same question about Judas Priest and you'd get far less of a response, with a couple being able to maybe name Breaking the Law. Motorhead (and maybe even moreso, Lemmy) were iconic in the rock music scene, and whilst Judas Priest certainly have their place too they definitely aren't as widely celebrated these days.

The point on the casual is fair, but I feel we're underestimating the number of metal fans at Glastonbury. True, i think Motorhead would have picked up a lot of "casuals" merely because they've heard of Lemmy. But once you're past Ace of Spades, I think you might struggle a bit with a casual. we say 9/10 would answer Ace of Spades - I feel that conversely, 9/10 people could give a Priest song, but not necessarily the same one. Breaking the Law, Living After Midnight, Hell Bent for Leather, Metal Gods - they're all synonymous with heavy metal and I think that a "casual" is more likely to know a wider spread of Priest, even if they don't know the material as well as Ace of Spades.

Priest have been above ZZ Top and Motorhead at European festivals for years now - and yes, that is generally rock or metal festivals. But I feel that translates across to other festivals too. I don't think they should be booked to a bigger spot - Lord no! - but for the purpose of filling that slot, they've got just as much a stake to it as the other two.

I am curious, because I was struggling to think of others; who would you have in that slot? If we presumed it is a thing - who would be your seventies/eighties hard rock outfit to plug the gap?

It was Iggy Pop before he became unavailable - now I don't have a clue and have a feeling they may just put Royal Blood there and have it as just a 'rock' slot rather than an oldies one, or just do away with it altogether because it was never really a thing and Motorhead and ZZ Top just happened to be available/third down the last two years.

Yeah, I was popping Iggy Pop in all my predictions too. He'd be the dream.

Well, Royal Blood there, I wouldn't complain. I feel they could do a Disclosure - return to much fanfare but wildly underperform and end up in impressive slots without much to justify it.

Had them pinned as major festival (R/L) headliners /co-headliners but they're instead headlining Eden Project which I don't think has even sold out. Looks to me like people have just moved on, but I still expect them to have a fairly decent slot this year (third down Pyramid/Other sub). They could probably do with releasing something soon to grab people's attention again.

I definitely disagree with you re: the household name thing. Sure they may not be a household name to people under 30, but to an older demographic (one that is well represented at Glastonbury), they are absolutely as well known as ZZ Top and Motorhead. 

Everything else you said is spot on though. I saw Priest at Download in '08 and it was rough then, let alone 11 years later.

The rock world is fickle. I felt they were a bit "one-trick-pony" to be honest - and neither time I saw them in 2015 did they blow me away.

Similar story with BMTH - R+L sub headliners in 2015 with a sold out academy tour on the way. Fast forward a year and a bit and their arena tour struggles to sell that well (though I think that can be blamed easily on the price of tickets - which saw a 12:50 increase on their academy shows to 35 quid - and their geographical spread. Nobody puts Manchester & Sheffield in the same debut tour.)

Really good lineup that Will, well done. I still can't see The Weeknd up against Radiohead though, just don't think the crowd split would be ideal for the fest. Could only see him up against the foos - but if there's info on Alt-J then he could only be a sub in my eyes.

Also, tiny thing - but the last I heard Declan Mckenna was being lined up for JP. (although this was a month or so ago and he did say to me that there was a chance of Other)

I saw Def Leppard arse end of 2015 - one of my biggest guilty faves - and they got blown off stage by Whitesnake and Black Star Riders, which was a proper shame. That being said, if they've only got an hour in the Friday sunshine, I'd happily take them.

Problem there however is that DL definitely see themselves as major headliners still - I heard rumblings they turned down IOW a few years back because they wanted them as a sub, despite IOW willing to shell out decent bucks.

Think it was under KOL in 14 - would have been an exclusive European show before a summer US tour with Kiss.

As the man who kickstarted this entire debate, I saw them at Brixton in 15 and Halford's vocals were still spot on. They were tight - but the sound quality was goddamn awful. Clear that up, it would have been one of my most enjoyed shows of the year.

Well, I think anyone would have expected them to have the album out by now if they were headlining major fests this year. Seeing as it's not, I think they'll be previewing new stuff and reminding people they're alive and grabbing slots off the new record next summer.

It's possible that people might have moved on but I don't think we can really say until the album or first tour is released - think it's not quite fair to judge that based on Eden Sessions not selling out given it's during Glasto, at an awkward part of the country to get to, £45 a ticket and, as said, without new songs.
