It annoys me that we live in a world in which Glastonbury feels the need to make a statement by doing this.... but we live in a world in which women are not allowed to play Golf in golf clubs and have other barriers put up, so I think it's a good statement.

 

I'd rather everyone be inclusive, but unfortunately - the world doesn't work like that, so to make a point, I agree with what the festival are doing.

At first I thought this idea was a tad extreme (in a sense that people could argue it's promoting inequality at the same time)  but the more I've thought about it... if this is what it takes to raise awareness of the underlying issue then I'm all for it!!

on the on-topic point of gender specific venues, unless it's an ironic political statement this is literally the most sexist idea I have heard for a venue.  

sexism is obviously ok if it's for intentional humourous/satirical effect. But then I have a rather fucked up sense of humour

No problem in principal but glastonbury really isnt the time, isnt the festival meant to be inclusive for all? I dont think theyll be many takers either, glastonburys about having a good time and going nuts regardless of the genders that are around you, why so serious? we`re meant to forget the real world at a place like glastonbury are we not? including the real worlds issues! I camp with a group including both genders and none of them would be the slightest bit interested in going anywhere that `blocks` other members of the group from joining the fun simply based on there gender and im sure that goes for many.  I dont even see `men` and `women` when im having fun like I do at glasto...I simply see other fun people to have fun with......why so damn heavy? wouldnt mind but thats a venue that could have been used for something everybody could have enjoyed!

cant help noticing some of the actual description is a bit full of sexist stereotyping anyway `diy powertools workshop`....yes because these women yeah? they cant know how to use powertools as their women! so we must teach them!.......lol  (my wife would have something to say about that, much better at diy then I am! haha)

I find it interesting that several people have said "sexism doesn't exist at Glastonbury" (and variations of this). Yes it does. It exists everywhere. It would be lovely if there were some sexism-free zone we could all go to for 5 days, but no such place exists. No, not even at Glastonbury.

Glastonbury has always had a strong political element. This is part of that lineage. Whether the 'venue' is good or bad we don't know yet. I don't know what it's going to look like. But it's raising an issue. It's not supposed to be Glastonbury's number 1 party venue that men have to miss out on. It's trying to raise an important issue. And I think we have to wait and see if it does a good job of it.

Agreed. It's also daft to suggest the festival is somehow immune from sexism when you've got Emily talking regularly about the gender imbalance at the top of the lineups on the main stages. 

No point in pretending these things don't exist because it makes you uncomfortable, if the point of this is to raise awareness and encourage debate then it's already working.

Sorry to dwell on grim info but was it last year or the year before that the security report posted on here after the festival revealed there'd been a rape near the stone circle?
