I wouldn’t really consider her a Bloc9 booking or say Amie Lens, Adam Bayer and all that lot. I may be wrong like. I certainly hope they don’t spunk their budget on that myself.

Yeah totally, unless Block9's budget has skyrocketed recently. Probs similar reasons they haven't had e.g. Klock and Dettmann there, despite playing elsewhere n all

iI keep forgetting that Diplo has been announced but it's yet to be confirmed which stage. Not on any of the announcements apart from the initial poster. Got to be Arcadia, hasn't it? I'm thinking we might see a Silk City appearance at some point, too...

JPT like Annie Mac the other year imo

How big is this venue meant to be? I did read it was meant to hold around 1000 I think but I just assumed that was wrong. Where is it going to go for a start? I always had Bloc9 down as the most underground place at Glastonbury with like special bookings for the Downlow like MAW, Rodger Sanchez and stuff. Feels to me anyway she’d be better suited to Arcadia. Maybe I’ve totally underestimated the size of this new venue and their vision for it.

Looking at the map from 2017 to now, Block 9 is over twice the size, by area. I can't remember where the '15000' capacity figure came from, but I think it appeared from good info and has been repeated. I assumed that was the capacity for the whole of the newly expanded Block9, so to include those in the Downlow, Meat Rack, Genosys, IICON and whatever else they have (people seem to think that the London Underground has been retired). If it was 'just' those four venues...well, Downlow + Meat Rack + old Genosys are a few thousand max, so IICON could be pretty mahoosive...

I guess we’ll find out soon enough. I just can’t see them operating a club the size of Fabric or WHP as one big stage like even those spaces have 3 rooms. Be cool if there was a multi room big space better for bookings too.

Fuck, it's a long time until Friday!

Spektre are on my list of must-sees. Absolutely banging.

Currently obsessed with The Ark. These guys are really, really good. Pretty much perfect techno box-tickers for me.

PLEASE give them a really good slot, AT NIGHT, in the dark. Daytime raving just isn't the same for me, especially techno of this sound and quality.

I have a horrible feeling that the full festival drop is going to be an absolute nightmare for me. First World Festival Problem, I acknowledge, but it doesn't assuage my worries...!

Saturday night headliner is killing me Ben. Have said yes to Hot Chip, Chems and Wu Tang. I think deep down I know that I will be at Hot Chip but I am really torn.

@Mardy Was not really too keen on Georgia. She ticks all the boxes but seems to be something missing. Reminds me of a cross between MIA and Robyn. Read an article and it said she sounds like 80's Chicago house. Now she might have used a cowbell on an 808 on a tune but apart from that it sounded absolutely nothing like acid house or anything Frankie would would have come up with.

@FuzzyDunlop That Swimming Girls tune was pleasant enough but not really synthpop. Have listened to a few more and and they sound ok.

Really?

I would say that if IICON is being created as a many-1000s venue and techno is on the brief, then Charlotte de Witte would be very much the sort of artist they would look at - not for the 'name', you understand, rather for the sort of reaction she'd get.

That said, I too hope that the line-up is quality across the board, rather than top-loading the budget with any 'big stars' who would need a big fee...

Ben

Edit - and, as @FuzzyDunlop will attest, if Charlotte is even in the crosshairs, please can we have Enrico Sangiuliano as well/instead? They both played Boomtown last year, and whilst Charlotte was good, Enrico blew her out of the water...

I fully endorse this. He was sensational. Trippy, driving, uplifting - slightly electro... techno bliss.

I am happy to say he is back at Boomtown too... I will report back on that at a later date!

Its the only tune I have heard of theirs in fairness & I quite liked it... its a bit synthy... but yeah, you are right.

Its quite nice mate. A few kind of remind me of Paris Angels. Was waiting for a Ricky Turner vocal to come in.

You've underestimated the size (add an extra 0 and then some), you're pretty on the money with the vision though

Got to remember, y'all: Block9 still go for "credible" above all, not cashing chips on the big guns of the scene. There's a whole thing about the economics of festivals that is too boring to go into, but CDW and Beyer command insane, utterly insane fees. Glasto, as we all know, do well to avoid that where possible. B9 especially are values-driven free party refugees from an era before turned major-production pirates. An insurrection on the big, lumbering Business Techno ship.

They're the captain now.

Can you please write my eulogy

Jesus. 10 000? I go watching Blackburn Rovers every week who are lucky to get 14 000 that is a hell of a lot of people. Who the fuck are they gonna book? Kraftwerk!

    • Would you decide to go once more I recommend to queu up at the official freenow taxi line. It might take 15 min or so but they are not ripping you off. Even at 3 or 4 in the night it costed us about 25eur to the city center.
    • How do you mean? Better as a hotel/ festival combo?   I've done rock am ring at both sites.....unpopular opinion I much preferred the mending site and really didn't like the long and narrow main stage at RaR.
    • Yesterday was another brilliant day of music for me. Some highlights:  My Bloody Valentine - absolutely loved it! Maybe my main festival highlight. I felt submerged in the music with all the layers and distortion. It becomes hypnotic almost as it progresses. Not as loud as some thought it might be, but it didn’t need to be. The visuals added a lot too. During the noise part of You Made me Realise, I was basically in a trance staring at the visual tunnel or whatever it was on screen. Amazing experience. Little Simz - as she mentioned at the start, you’re guaranteed a good time with her. Great performance just like in 2022. Zero complaints. The little DJ section wasn't something I expected but was cool. Kneecap - I had a blast but at this point in the night I was at my most intoxicated let's say, so I don’t remember it as clearly as I'd have liked to!    The xx - The sound for this was perfectly balanced (at least where I was) and the band were great. Lots of talkers, but with the crowd size and being kind of far back, it's to be expected. Intro was one of my favourite moments this year. Big Thief - really good live performers. The lead singer has a lovely voice. This was a nice chill way to kick off the mordor gigs for me.
    • I've been attending Primavera every year since my first one in 2017 & it's always been my favourite week of the year, but I think things have changed.   Firstly, the site just feels too busy in this current set-up. I'm sure it was a lot easier back in 2017-19 to get between the stages & then a good spot for the next one, but now you increasingly have to sacrifice parts of a set or miss them out completely to plan for later on. I wish we still had the Bits area over the bridge to spread everyone out.   But the main issue is the talking, it's always been here but this year it's been relentless & I just can't tolerate it any more. It's at every stage, and everywhere from the front to the back, there is no escape. Not focusing on nationalities, but a major dynamic now seems to be groups of people who are only focusing on their own good time & aren't interested if this affects anyone else. It seems essential that all members of the group are together at the same time, so it's people making telephone calls, people on shoulders waving phone torches, people barging through. It's alright, I'm only trying to watch The Cure here.   I will have a year away to think about it. I thought might give up completely but yesterday was a bit of a classic day after two unenjoyable ones. Adding Olivia Rodrigo to Baxter Dury, Gelli Haha, The XX, Gorillaz & Kneecap shows how good it can be, but as with everything, it's always the people that have the biggest impact.
