True on the first. I guess the proper way of saying it would be to say that the Police believe they have solid evidence to ensure a conviction, but whether the conviction happens remains at the jury's discression. But ultimately it's the 2nd that is the important part. A person who admits an offence is guilty of that offence.

Agreed :)

On topic again, have you seen the pop-up screen at the official GFL website?

For a second I thougth it was the Quadrophenia/ The Who logo, but then it turned out to be a warning against legal highs...

Well, it's not heartbreaking for me anyway - Belle and Sebastian followed by the second half of the Chems.

You'll get to see all of the Chems most probably. That was my original plan as I couldn't see anyone that I hadn't seen before as appealing as The Who headlining.

I'm going to watch The Who.

Yes you can. I was released on bail under caution for a week once before all charges were dropped, at no point did I admit anything.

No, you can't.

And what happened to you doesn't sound like you accepted a caution.

No, it sounds like he was released on bail. There may be some confusion over the word caution, as he would have been cautioned at point of arrest and again in interview.

That's not the same as the caution, which already stated, is given at the conclusion of an investigation as a form of disposal.

It does to me. I doubt he said, 'don't give me a caution, lock me up and we'll sort this out in court.'

you don't get both bailed AND cautioned for an offence tho.

They're very different things, which are in distinctly different parts of the process, without any possibility of over-lap.

I didn't read who he was quoting, I thought he was quoting Mungo57 from the previous page, my bad. Nothing to see here.

If 133,000 people can sign a petition to stop Kanye headlining on the back of him being harmless and just a bit of an egotistical knob - then surely many more would sign one to stop The Who after Pete's guilty plea.

At the end of the day he's pleaded guilty - so by the letter of the law that's what he is - guilty of purchasing child poronography. It's disgusting that the festival have even approached them to play. I hope a petition starts to stop these - it would be one that actually has some meaning behind it and I for one would sign with no hesitation.

Hopefully we can bombard the festival with so many petitions that they start to think they're constantly fighting an uphill battle against a tide of holier-than-thou rentamobs and decided that they just can't be arsed any more.

I'd certainly sign a petition in support of this post.

A person who admits an offence is guilty of that offence.

This is correct, but its important to be clear what the offence was. He was guilty of signing up to the website. It was made clear that this, in itself, is an offence of strict liability - which is to say that intent is irrelevant. However, it is at the police's/court's discretion to moderate the sentence if they are convinced by the evidence that the culprit's intent does mitigate the offence, even though they did, strictly speaking, commit the crime.

They took the view that, although he was an idiot, he did not intend to do more than he said - see if the credit card would work - and that the sentence, if it went to court, would reflect that. Therefore, it was not in the public interest to take it to court, as it was unlikely result in a custodial sentence. A caution was offered and Townsend took that option. In scale its hugely different, but in principle its like a fixed penalty parking ticket and a very controversial practise. Potentially innocent people take the option rather than gamble in court, and guilty people appear to get off lightly, but it goes on all the time and leaves everyone feeling dissatisfied.

However, whatever the rights and wrongs, it would not have been offered unless the offence was only notionally committed. In short - they believed his story. I tend to think anyone stupid enough to use their own named credit card is surely too inept on computers to carry out the clean up exercise you surmise, and I would imagine the police have sophisticated techniques for determining this, but now I'm only guessing.

The point is that I tend to believe him, and you may not, but he was not cautioned for downloading kiddie porn, as the police were satisfied he did not do that. Had he done that, or been suspected of doing that, he would not have been given the option of caution.

Townsend is an insufferable knob, and always has been, and his ludicrous sense of self importance led him to think he was on some absurd one man crusade, which even now he seems incapable of being properly penitent for. These are good reasons for disliking the man, which I do, intensely - but he's not a puedophile.

Probably

I still find it ironic that during their set in 07 he kept talking about how good the internet was and how it brought everyone together.

He's often claimed to have dreamed up the internet in the early seventies as part of his Lifehouse project.

But he always fails to mention that the reason he invented the internet in the first place was to access images of child abuse.

I think that's pretty telling.

Didnt realise there were so many operation Yewtree detectives on here! Alot of people thinking there experts of the Justice system.

Also a lot of people (myself included) who don't know what really went on other than the fact that a man pleaded guilty to accessing a site containing indecent images of children. In whatever circumstances this may have been - it just seems wrong that he's been given the chance to headline Glastonbury.

why would you stick up for a man who describes himself as a neoconservative and who admitted paying for child porn?

what a peculiar man to choose to champion.

    • The rumour was uk arena tour late this year.  Same as Charli xcx cant be announced until Reading headline is done.
    • Latest from the sun at least is that harry is still headlining but Olivia has turned down a spot next year to work on new music and hope for 2028.   So they can't have Fender, Fontaines, Harry, Olivia and Madonna.
    • I mean I don't think EC and FFDP are borderline sub, they wouldn't be any lower now.   2025 is about as strong as Bloodstock gets yet this year only one headline would sub and the others would play 3rd down or lower.    Machine Head wouldn't sub at Download regardless of rarity, they don't sell enough tickets and I'm not sure Gojira would sub either. Their last UK tour was a mix of smaller arenas and academy dates. Ally Pally being the only London date, not even Wembley Arena.
    • live music / main stage will generally end around 11pm but theres dj’s and late goings on right till 4am if you are so inclined.   Drinks are about £7.50 a pint probably and yes theres lots of mixed drinks / spirits / cocktails available to buy   wonderful festival, back for my third year in a row and 4th overall
    • If anyone sees Lakefest this weekend on any sites please post here, I’ve got alerts set. Been on TFG in recent years and not sold out yet.
