I'd be happy with that R&L, nothing special but I'd like The Prodigy but still not got me really excited but that is the case with pretty much all the festivals this year (unless one line up is Arcade Fire, Radiohead and Biffy or Muse)

Yeah R&L would probably be my favourite set of headliners there, but none of them excite me. RHCP would be the one I'd most like to see out of every headliner on there.

Now, I'm not one for thinking there are patterns for headliners based on genre / legend status / etc but one pretty undeniable R&L pattern is for at least one to be an act that hasn't headlined the festival before. 2005 was the last time that didn't hold true. So I'd be reluctant to agree with this prediction.

Other than that it all seems very likely though :). What do you reckon for Sonisphere now they've blown their Metallica + Iron Maiden load again? System Of A Down, Queens Of The Stone Age, Avenged Sevenfold, maybe? Obviously wouldn't sell as well as this year, but probably enough to stave off another cancellation.

EDIT: Suppose Biffy again would be feasible for Soni too

Doubt Queens will be touring again. I'm not convinced Sonisphere could return without a massive rock/metal act and I'd be surprised if they could fund Foos or AC/DC, and Sabbath look to be on hold until 2016 while Ozzy does solo.

I agree about R+L always having a new headliner - surprised I didn't notice that actually.

Yeah I was predicting that Soni won't be on.

Very true about R&L; I did consider having The Black Keys instead of The Prodigy or co-headlining with them. I just thought a co-headline involving The Prodigy would be pretty rubbish at the site where they don't play last. Although I doubt they give a shit about how good it is at Leeds.

I would be surprised by The Black Keys stepping up to headline anywhere now. The new album really didn't seem to do them any favours and if these forums are representative at all then everybody's gone off them. Even Noel's probably more likely now.

Going back to your predictions, I'd say Libs at R+L and The Prodigy at IOW would be more likely for each of them, providing both of them do produce the fabled new material.

They can co-headline and still play last at both sites though.

Nope. Paramore and qotsa co headlined and had equal billing in every regard, even on the poster.

The prodigy have never been top of the bill at Leeds.

If that's your argument for saying The Prodigy would be a new headliner then it's so weak it's not even worth considering, frankly.

I suppose the festival only had two headliners in 2011 seeing as neither The Strokes nor Pulp were at the top of the poster at both Reading and Leeds? If the Strokes headline again, you'd be saying it's the second time they've headlined? Be serious.

I think the best argument for prodigy is that they only headlined reading because whoever headlined Leeds couldn't do reading, so it was more a bump up and since they've gone down to subbing again so could be seen perhaps as a fresh headliner. But either way I don't really care. If it's not them it'll only be someone shit like Florence, mumfords or black keys probably.

think the 'new' act is far more likely to be one of the latter three than The Prodigy. not saying that The Prodigy won't play - they might - but it's a bit of a long stretch to call an act that has headlined a lot of other festivals over the years a 'new' headliner, especially when it usually seems to be taken by an act who has just risen to headliner status

I can't see this 'rule' being legit anyway.

FR has taken pride in saying they use new headliners and they've had one every year but one or something. They can do whatever they want but it seems more than a coincidence, considering they surely would've rather had a reliable established headliner than some choices over the years.

Yes they can. Whoever they co-headlined with would still get the same amount of time as The Prodigy. Its still a headline slot.

Not really how it works with R+L though. Coheadliners don't even need the same amount of time (2011), one of them just needs to play last at one site.
