Prince to me is a little like New Order. Easier to enjoy as a singles or "best of" artist. I have a couple of his records, but I agree, he hasnt made a consistent record since "Sign 'O' the Times".

Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" & Joni Mitchell's "Blue" have already been mentioned - Both these albums have been ever-present in my life for almost 40 years.

An album that most don't even see as this artists best album, preferring instead the poppier later albums, and that I doubt would make any greatest albums list but is one of my all time favourites ;

Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West.

Why I like it ?

I don't think there is a bad track on it, the lyrics are meaningful (to me) and reflect my own feelings on issues like religion and modern civilization. Also I took the time to learn how to play most of it so familiarity I guess. I do think it's an album that needs a few listens through to really appreciate it's qualities.

Now I haven't heard that one so cheers for the recommendation

if you can find it, try to get the original vinyl. It got released on CD only a few years ago (after people like me had hassled for it), but they included some extra tracks which I reckon has taken away from the impact of the original vinyl release.

'The Album' by Cliff. "Brother to Brother" on there is moving, epic stuff. Cliff at his finest.

I've just diligently checked this thread to make sure no-one else mentioned this belter. I've come to the conclusion, after long discussions with friends, that this is the greatest album of all time in my opinion.

Tool- Lateralus.

An absolute masterpiece in every way. Don't be put off by the "metal" label. Tool are to metal what Floyd are to "hard rock". Consider what he actually says in each song as well as the incredible song structures and 2 or 3 part songs. Amazing.
