Remain In Light by Talking Heads

one of the best albums in the world, but...

Bettered by (the original vinyl version of*) The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads.

(* don't get the CD version, they ruined it by adding extra tracks which spoils the flow).

Coincidentally, I was giving Remain In Light one of its occasional spins last night to see if this would be the time when the penny drops and I finally 'get' it.

But no, it still sounded like a wasp rattling around in a biscuit tin. I like the idea of it, but I guess it's going to be one of those things that just isn't for me.

I can understand that someone like you who mostly likes dull 4/4 rock (as so many of your posts get to prove) that you don't get it.

By all means extoll the virtues of it - I'm sufficiently broad-minded enough to at least try to see what the fuss is about. Just don't assume it's somehow beyond me because I also happen to like the Rolling Stones :-P

But the virtues? If you don't get it by listening, you don't get it. That's how listening works.

While that's true enough, some music takes a while to grow on you and you need to persevere with it - not everyone falls in love with Trout Mask Replica, Tago Mago or On The Corner the first time they hear it. But if there's a consensus that a record is worth acclimatising yourself to, so to speak, then a persuausive argument in its favour does have a place. It's one of the jobs of critics - to steer people down the roads less travelled.

I recently heard Trout Mask Replica, and indeed Captain Beefheart, for the first time and fell instantly in love yet many people whose musical opinions I value and respect find it impossible to enjoy. Music is a very fickle beast.

Oh, this is bollocks. I could add a hundred more (relatively uninspired) choices but I'll just chuck in Trouble Will Find Me by The National and Safe As Milk by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band because I'm listening to them both a lot at the moment and can't ever imagine getting bored of them. Oh, and The Defenestration of St. Martin by Martin Rossiter, as I haven't mentioned it for about four posts!
