The point about the size of bands is interesting. Showing my age a bit but when I started going to reading bands who headlined would tend to be those playing a couple of nights at brixton academy or at a push one night at Wembley arena.

Now those type of acts tend to headline or even sub the NME stage with mainstage headliners selling out a couple of nights at the o2 arena in their own right

agree with all of these. However, I've thought that many times in the past about band placements at reading, and usually in hindsight they know what they are doing.....I bet all of them have new material or at least singles out by then which propel them in the limelight more as the current big artists.

1 example I remember is Arctic Monkeys in 2006. Subbing with 1 album. That happened folks.

I love the lineup but I do think the NME stage is terrible. It just doesnt seem to fit the festival at all... where as the main stage is very decent, yes there are some acts higher than expected but overall would say it is about as strong as it's ever been (especially at the very top). Lockup is looking great even if the idea of calling a stage at Reading the Rock Stage is ridiculous. Dance looks like it would be great for dance fans (not me unless it is someone like Grimes, Aphex Twin, UNKLE etc.). FR looks pretty standard with a fair few bands who I thought were too big for the tent. Unfortunately music has definitely gone the way that there is no time for bands to establish themselves which is sad and it also seems once brilliant bands get easily forgotten.

I think the name change is simply so people didn't cry when the likes of Heaven's Basement were booked to play it because it appears Mike Davies only knows about 40 bands and just rotates them so they couldn't possibly have 3 days of Lock Up. I think even calling it the Radio 1 Rock Show stage and just have it curated by Dan P Carter would've made much more sense.

the way that last announcement went down makes me think they spent a bit too much on the top of the bill and didn't leave enough for an undercard that had depth and quality in it. also there seems to be more bands out of place this year than last that don't really make sense (as much as normal always seems to be someone out of place when announced)

don't get me wrong i'm not slating the bands they have booked, but there seems to be less established bands over the whole line up compared to other years.

reminds me a bit of download 2010 where they had 3 huge headliners, and because of that they had a hell of a lot more repeats than they normally do.

just seems really weak, and heck i've only been going the last 3 years, and a fair few people haven't been happy with the last few in one way or another.

Really struggling for a Sunday headliner at Leeds. Eminem will be the biggest chavfest in the history of the festival, plus he's shite and will be talking/miming over a backing track. Had a listen to tomahawk and they're dreadfull. British sea power are extremely dull and alt j are a poor mans Maccabees. I don't think I've ever disliked every headliner on a night at leeds. May have to give magnetic man a try but not really into that kind of stuff.

But many people will also agree that Blink were shit, so that counters the 'they're in many people's top 5' justification. They had a massive crowd (to begin with) so interest was high enough to justify the headliner placing, although I think it's a stretch to say that they went down a storm.

No question Green Day are a legit headliner, not sure what the issue with them is (objectively). Sure they're a repeat headliner (from nine years ago) and it isn't an inspired booking, but how many major festivals have non-repeat inspired headliner bookings?

Anyone bringing up Stevie Wonder of Elton John for Bestival (as some hipster smartarse no doubt would) can ask themselves whether they'd be a better booking for R&L than Green Day, and if the answer isn't "don't be so fucking daft, of course they wouldn't" then they're kidding themselves.
