I think the indie sort of headliner has to go to either Arcade Fire or Arctic Monkeys at the moment... with Arctic Monkeys being more likely due to a longer gap away from the festival. Plus they will have had two new albums out since they played Reading last where as AF will only have one. I'm not going to write AF off though as I do think they will headline a fest this year and I would guess at Glastonbury, Reading or Bestival.

Also, Euro fests appear to rule out Arctics for IOW, so think it'll be Glasto or R&L for them.

Depeche Mode, Arctics and Sabbath would be a decent trio.

They delayed there album to the end of next year if I remember rightly. Might not be around till 2014. (Take note Gazza)

It seems to me that these days the heavier bands announced for R and L get the most positive reaction.

I think more heavier bands (rock/metal) on the main stages is the way forward, for success. The heavier the bands are the more passionate the people are about them playing.

All of this Mumford, Jake Bugg, Alt-J stuff for me is bad news for me. I'm not saying that R and L should turn into a Bloodstock / Wacken festival but I definitely feel that a stronger rock element to the line-up would be really great for the majority.

True, but I think they're completely justified in headlining the tent. I can see them getting even bigger by next years festival.

Why is everyone saying it was an anticlimax? It wasn't ever claimed to be a big announce. It was at 12noon during cottons show ffs.

Just a note to people complaining about the acts announced (not the size of the announcement), only two acts have been announced in positions which have been available in previous years. One of these is Deftones, who people seem to be happy with. And Alt-J will be headlining the NME against an older/heavier act such as Sabbath, so there's not really much reason to complain.

Wouldn't anyone else be impressed about how FR have gone about things if it's Depeche Mode and Black Sabbath. If its something like:-

Main: all the acts that people have been pining for, heavier acts, older acts, maybe a day of indie acts - for a mixed audience.

NME: Flavour-of-the-month acts like Jake Bugg and Alt-J for the younger audience, maybe a day of older acts.

Lockup+FR+R1 Dance Stage+1xtra Hip Hop. For added variety (and contemporary acts to compensate for the 'older acts' on the main.)

I've always thought that R&L have made bands "bigger" than they are at the time of the first announcement, in this case, Alt-J headlining the NME... But August 2013 is a long way away and the festivals are long associated with Radio 1 and NME who's missions seem to be bringing you the next big thing... Only last night I happened to be listening to Radio 1 when Zane Lowe was on and he was banging on about great new music from a band who only formed in February this year... I'm not that surprised by this announcement and I think the new stages will add something to the festivals, this means that there will be a 3 day lock up too!

The rest of the announcement should be interesting:)
