As much as I dislike Rihanna, I like the adolescent 'she doesn't even write her own songs' argument even more. Last time I checked Ronnie Spector, Dusty Springfield, Ella Fitzgerald, Dionne Warwick and Martha Reeves didn't write a note of their own material either, to say nothing of people like Elvis or Sinatra. 'Manufactured' pop music - be it Be My Baby or Daydream Believer or Relax or I Want You Back - shouldn't be disqualified for consideration as art purely because it's not performed by the people who compose it. Cole Porter never sang a song in his puff.

Whether it's any good or not is another very different argument.

yep!and cathy dennis.

It must take incredible talent to release song after song that is consistently exactly the same, but subtley different enough to sell a bazillion records

i dunno about talent, but it's defo the case that there's an awful lot of so-called 'credible' music nowadays that would rate as 'easy' for S.A.W.'s skillset.

It should be disqualified as 'art' if the person singing it doesn't give a fuck about it and is using it as a selfmarketing strategy. all the people you mention actually had talent and put their soul into the music.

I'm no fan of Rihanna, but ... Is she really any different from the average bunch of white boys with guitars who form a band?

No different to them she got involved in performing music (tho by just singing), presumably because she likes music and likes singing - no different to how they might like playing guitar.

In nearly all cases - any band, or an act like Rihanna - they hope that fame and fortune might come their way via their performances.

Sure, Rihanna has had a marketing machine behind her that has given her soaraway success, but here's betting that nearly every guitar band would scoop-up the opportunity of the same if it was offered to them.

Yes, she flashes lots of flesh along with singing ... but who is the fool over that? Her for doing it, or those who give her publicity or who say they like her because of it?

I don't give a fuck what kind of role model is, most of the world's great rock stars weren't exactly Mother Teresa. What I do care about is she's completely devoid of any artistic merit, and after all, glasto is the world's greatest "performing arts" festival, it kind of matters in my book. She is the pits of the popular music industry. A total media whore who couldn't give two fucks about the music or integrity as long as she's got an industry dick in her mouth and a rock of coke wedged up her nose.

How on Earth did you get that from what I put? I regard him as a strain on humanity. I was just a bit annoyed she got back together with him. "Hey girls, it doesn't matter if a guy smashes your face in, as long as he's a pop star with tattoos"

    • mmm... i note there are several derogatory comments about this... not sure what it says about me, but i could spend a happy afternoon here...   Simple Minds, Deacon Blue and Texas are all great live bands.   hell, i'd even be drawn away from the bar to see James Blunt (if only for a bit of a nostalgia trip for his show on the Pyramid that i admit i hugely enjoyed).   still, with all that said - there's no way i'm going to the other end of the country for it...   🙂

    • Have a great festival to those that are going, I cant wait to get there tomorrow!
    • ah i get ya.. Yeah I hate festivals that have that barrier and front section. Roskilde is gonna be the same, which I'm not looking forward to navigating. Like you say, you end up missing other stuff having to get there dead early. Luckily there's not much we're arsed about on at Roskilde though so that wont be such an issue! hahaha
    • Not directly my expectation but my wishlist   - car seat headrest (it has been way too long these guys did Europe) - death cab for cutie - new constellations - interpol - bush - swimschool - suede - the haunted youth (should have been there this year) - flipturn   and oh yes Yumi Zouma can come any week, day, hour but this is a personal fetish with this band
