We're getting close to the "pointless financial debate" thread or whatever, but those figures re: Utd are about "Brand Man Utd" which isn't so easy to judge.

it depends if you're a person who thinks there's actually anything of meaning within the whole 'brand' thing or not (not just towards Utd) as to whether there's any extra value there.

In normal life, people generally want what they consider to be good value. Brands don't come into it.

Of course, with a footie team (and some other things - tho mainly for suckers in regard to those other things) there's less of a value judgement that can be made, as people don't generally support a club on a value basis. So there's the opportunity to over-charge because there's no replacement product from another 'brand' that the fan can buy in it's place.

But any brand ceases to have any extra value once that over-charge is exploited to its full extent, where people (or not enough of them) won't part with their money because the costs are too high - and last summers season ticket thing strongly suggests that Utd have exploited the brand (amongst consumers, at least *) to the fullest extent possible now.

(* They might sucker in a few more businesses to use the brand to shift their own products, but those businesses would be rather dumb - the season ticket thing says there's minimal scope for more brand exploitation).

Anyway, with all of that brand exploitation having been done, Utd are only returning a profit of around £50M on average (the nature of football means it's less steady year-on-year than would be expected of more standard mature businesses). So as an investment opportunity (rather than a vanity buy) it's worth £600M at most (12 times profit*) - because £600M invested almost anywhere else will give a better return on investment.

Agreed. At times he's every bit as good as Ronaldo. However, Ronaldo was consistently very good. Nani very definitely isn't - and consistency should be a pre-requisite for any winner of the Player of the Year award...

Also, on the season ticket front, I was offered a season ticket for Old Trafford but you have to buy all the champo league and FA Cup tickets too and if you don’t sell them you lose out. Too rich for my blood as flights on match day are always a mess from Dublin.

Could end up costing about 4k for the entire season, even if I didn’t go to the mid week games and the crap home games against Spurs n stuff.

Ralph stats don't tell the full story as we all know. Noble has 13 assists and 3 goals for WHU this season, and his role in the team isn't really to play the killer final ball or score goals. Nor has he been WHU's best player.

Nani isn't often consistent for 90 minutes let alone a full season. The top clubs have gone backwards this season and I'd be disappointed if the PotY came from one of those clubs.

IMO Adam, Nolan, Parker, Murphy, Davies have all been more consistent for their respective unfashionable clubs, and more key to their results than Nani.
