Tugger and Chappipunk could tell you a whole lot better than me, but i'm guessing most knew that in all probability this would be their only shot at the champs league. That they've managed to stay in contention for a top 4 place whilst continuing in the champs league is a brilliant achievement (grudingly said of course). I would think most Spurs fans really hoped to get beyond the group stages and anything else (qualifying again, progressing from last 16 etc.) was a bonus.

well, obviously it's each person's own call to make. But if it was my team, I'd be more wanting a steady progression upwards than a one-off shot at the big-time.

But I guess it fits with 'Arry's death or glory approach to management (that mostly involves the death of those clubs ), and Spurs fans have had so little glory that perhaps they're happy to just get something.

The champions league is so hard to predict as its Rare for the two best teams in europe to reach the final. Man u v barca was the only recent example I can think of. You look at those two liverpool v milan finals and the teams were very mediocre on both occasions. What happens played to their advantage is that they were not in a league title race and thats why I think chelsea could be dangerous.

Was referring more to the big games that those Spurs fans have experienced this year. A lot of the fans would probably never have experienced going to the likes of the Bernabeu before, let alone seeing their team match up agaisnt Europe's giants. Games to remember for a lifetime, so I doubt they'd have asked for much more in that respect. Of course it'll be nice to qualify for next year, and they're still in with a great shout of doing so. After all, they're only two points behind City if they win their game in hand & Mancini's going to have to open up and go for 3 points in some of City's remaining big games imo which could see them caught up the other end....but end of the day think most Spurs fans would've acknowledged that Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal are pretty firmly in the top 4 currently that it'll be hard to oust them, so mainly competing with City who were always going to spend a shitload this summer and duly obliged.

Even if they fail to qualify for the CL next season, I think they'll consider this season a big success in that they've raised their profile in Europe, done it playing attacking football, and shown they can compete which will help retain VDV, Bale, Modric etc. The disaster would've been heading out in the group stages and finishing well off the pace in the league.

Financially aswell, they'll get a fair amount of moolah to reinvest considering they've gone pretty deep into the tournament and similarly from a business point of view will be happy that other English teams have progressed far aswell as boosts their CL revenue. Similarly Arsenal though knocked out will benefit further the deeper the other English candidates get into the tournament.

But, it might be the case - in fact I'd say the more likely case - that if they'd chosen to not fight so hard (no, I don't mean Joe Jordan in the Chumps and concentrated more on the Prem they'd probably have 4th about sown up by now, and by doing that ensure they'd have another European 'adventure' next year. Taking a more long term view of things would have allowed all of the good things you list above, but with a much more decent chance of it being year-on-year rather than just once.

I wouldnt be too confident of staying up if I was a WHU fan, you have improved greatly in the last few weeks, and will obviously stay up if your current form continues, but it is still very tight down there!

We're really confident because yesterday was the start of an easy run of games against shit teams...there was your boys, and coming up we have Man Utd at home, and Bolton, Citeh, and Chelsea away...easy. Safe before the end of April!
