Fontaines are way too big now - Glasto headliners after the year break imo, one more solid album and they get it

 

I'm really hoping for Alvvays to be at GM in some capacity, Far Out headline would be great

I said this in 2021, they were "too big" then but GM got very lucky that they seem to be stand up guys in honouring the booking from the previous cancelled year - or GM got insanely lucky that there wasn't much competition that year. 

 

They will sell out GM sized venues (i.e. 25k) on their own now.

It's mildly insane to me having watched them all the way to hear you guys dismissing them as too big for Green Man. Mental stuff. They're headlining Alltogethernow in Waterford the week before GM, same capacity give or take. I'm not arguing with ye mind. Watching them Friday night it really felt like boom! They're gone! I'm slightly emotional at the hypothetical prospect of them actually headlining Glasto down the line.

They've sold out 45,000 capacity Finsbury Park already for July. There's no way they're playing a 25,000 capacity festival a month later, let alone one they've headlined post-Covid.

Fontaines won't play next year for sure. Going forwards, they could come back but only if the career starts going downwards lol. Headlining Reading/Glastonbury seem a lot more likely.

Fontaines DC sold out a 40,000 event this Summer, they would have been way off that the year before. That's the point - their star is rising fast. That they have headliner stage presence doesn't hurt too.

As the other comments have said, they are already only one level down from headliner, so all it would take is one more popular album. There's a gap in the market for a fresh alt rock headliner, it can't be the same bands forever.

I think Fontaines will headline Reading in 2026, and if they that is a success and they get another hit album, theyd be in the conversation for headliner for sure for 2027.

Even without the arguments about how big they are or might be, there's no chance of anyone who headlined as recently as 2021 returning.

You don’t know who has turned it down or not, including Fontaines. Will try to remember to revisit this in 10 years when Fontaine’s are the new Foals/Biffy/Idles, but will almost certainly have something better to do.
