It’s also worth remembering that if we had gone into lockdown earlier on all 3 occasions then the lockdowns wouldn’t have needed to be as long. It’s on Johnson for all of them.

i blame the 2nd one for my illness, as that hit 2 months into the 2nd lockdown.

Do you think your illness was a side effect of having Covid?

Excess deaths are currently higher than they were during covid. All the undiagnosed cancers, cancelled ops and gp blood pressure checks are starting to filter through. It will also apparently get worse before it gets better.

Musk has said his followers should vote republican...for balance or something.

"Musk says stupid shit on twitter" isn't anything new. Main difference is he owns the place and is now prime target for parody.

It was never about deaths, more about keeping health services running.

There were never any easy answers, they could have just let it go and see what happens and hope for the best,  but could possibly have been a disaster and totally unacceptable to the public. I am not pro lockdown or restrictions at all, think they were a disaster, especially for young people, my kid was massively affected. But, I do understand why they did them, despite all the social/economic warnings, and also it's why I'm willing to cut Johnson some slack on some it.

It's not just health service failures causing the excess deaths, deaths due to respitritory complaints, the biggest cause of death in oldies, about stopped while we wore masks, and are now reoccurring.

...and the furlough thing was a quick fix to a looming crisis to prevent mass unemployment. Easy to blame furlough, but without govt support we'd be a in a lot worse state I reckon. Just need sound governance afterwards, which we haven't been getting.

Wasn't really about avoiding unemployment. It was about covering the costs of businesses which had been forced to close.

We kept limited services running. Stuff like cardiovascular treatment has never had a waiting list but we created one shutting it down. Here seems to be where most of the deaths are and a lot of these people waiting will continue to die:

Maybe we should have had a stricter lockdown to keep these things running better.

And knock on effect from that is jobs.

Yeah, but covering costs was a more immediate reason, otherwise businesses wouldn't have closed

I got some very radid heart treatment during the peak of COVID.

If Trump doesn’t run it’ll probably be DeSantis for the republicans specifically for the way he ran Florida during covid. For no repeated lockdowns, health service running and lower death rates than many lockdown states.

There is no health service for him to be running, that would be communizum.

He does and whilst the Tories might be thinking this is a clever move to stitch up a future Labour government it’s easily dealt as Labour can just ask where the cuts are coming from. Then if the Tories have no answer Labour can claim the Tories have no idea what they are doing.

Someone’s been reading Sam Freedman’s tweets! Sam, is that you?!

I said in a previous post my instinct was that Trump wouldn't be the 2024 Presidential candidate and my instinct was him as their second choice. Though the Daily Beast had a piece the other day claiming he may defer his Presidential ambition to 2028 as he doesn't want a primary against Trump. So... pfft. Who the fuck knows. At the least, the run to February 2024 when they start with Presidential primaries is going to be a real fucking drag.

I'm less sure as to who fulfils my criteria as a Democrat alternative to Biden, though I will say it rarely goes well when the sitting President is the subject of a contested primary (Ford in 1976 and Carter in 1980 come to mind, both of which also against the backdrop of a full-on clusterfuck).

In the dying days of the Trump presidency I seem to remember a lot of commentary about how he'd been grooming one of his kids to run in 2024 (daughter perhaps?).

I can't say I've heard anything other than a focus on Trump perhaps running in 24, so the question for those who have been following US politics closer than myself: what the hell happened to his kids' ambitions...or is he such a narcissist that he can't bear them running whilst he's still got breath in his lungs?

    • First forecasts claim that though it gets cooler on the weekend (33C-ish), heatwave will be back by Monday. They expect at least 37-38C for next week, they don't know if it goes up to 40 degrees or not. Going to be tough.
    • Already notified me last night. There is always the chance from the waiting list but from my experience, I either win the ballot or miss out. I have never been offered tickets from a wait list for Blue Lights. Had them a few times from Concert For Carers. Hopefully, others on here will have better luck.   We're sorry, but unfortunately, your name has not been selected for All Points East - Deftones (Outbreak) - Sunday 23rd August 2026 at Victoria Park, London on 23 Aug 2026 at 1:30 pm on this occasion. We'll add you to the waiting list, and we’ll be in touch if tickets become available.
    • Agreed. She was in self-promotion mode. Something big could be anything to an artist who already knows what's planned. People have just applied Glastonbury to it, even though the artist might not have been thinking about Glastonbury at all.  She never hinted at it being Glastonbury in any way shape or form.
    • The Pyramid is long overdue a rethink. It looks archaic in this day and age
    • With a good undercard and sensible pricing it might be doable. Took a long time for the Sunday at Tramlines to sell out though. Hopefully now they'd have some good footage from this year's shows to help with the promo.
