I remember Bolton doing well for years doing that!

False economics.
They may not have spent comparative fortunes in transfer fees. They did however, spend absolute fortunes on wages, agents, bonuses, signing on fees, bungs....

They spent money for years they didn’t have. Covered originally by the filament friend Eddie Davies, but when he pulled the ladder up - got wise of Gartside & the bung taker’s antics/ill health, take your pick - the pigeons came home to roost.

It’s why they’re now languishing in the 3rd division being watched by thousands of slightly dulled empty plastic seats.

Why would City fans go and watch Bolton? There is not much love between them.

Oh no doubt that's true, I was commenting on the fact it worked effectively in the short term, as you say not viable in the long term.

Newcastle have been doing it years now and then when shit starts hitting the fan, he does a marquee signing and a few other ones to paper over the cracks of years of neglect.

All the while he is looking to make a lot of money out of the football club, at least he isn’t bankrupting it. Every cloud....

Could be worse - he could sell St James’ as prime real estate and move you to Gateshead athletics track...

That may be because it's the wrong free signings and loan signings, rather than a problem with that strategy. Of course a free signing is not really free, I remember Arry at QPR hardly seemed to spend a penny on transfer fees.

This is the football thread...

It is. So have you any views on football matters? Or if you have to, an opinion on Harry Maguire? Or are you just a news service no one asked for?

For the record, I hated that Bolton team. ‘Orrible cynical cheats they were.

It may impact on his season id have thought..

How? You don't know the details, he hasn't been charged of any offence.

Why the media report on arrests, rather than wait for a charges or better a conviction is entirely another thread.

To be fair we've had some decent loans, Ben Arfa (turned into a full transfer) Remy, Kennedy (poor 2nd season) but we've had some real stinkers too.

ah, that old chestnut, another club has it worse off so you shouldn't really complain.

He also hasn’t been nicked for anything football related.

Hes a rag, don't ruin my faux outrage and disgust at this despicable action.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
