Glad you're okay CF, I think we're all a bit twitchy about any little niggle at the moment. Reassuring to see that your GP acted in such a professional manner.

amazing really ... 2 people ahead of me in the phone queue , normally at least 15 .... just felt the need to be a bit proactive because of the dangers of high blood sugar and the odd massive increase in insulin requirements often connected with infection  ... thanks

over the past 2 weeks or so ive been suffering  a tight chest which at times has felt worse along with a struggle to keep my blood sugar down .... so Today after much deliberation I contacted the doctor and they did an over the phone triage .... they they told me to come to the surgery and I would need to attend a separate part of the surgery they were using for infections ( anxiety levels increase ) anyway I went in and had an assessment by my Dr in PPE including mask ,they checked my sats or is it stats (never been sure ) and they were all perfectly normal and nothing visibly wrong ... ive been given some antibiotics as a precaution but im bloody glad I contacted the DR as im a bit of a worrier .Moral of the story here guys contact the DR if you have any issues guys thats what they are there for ....

You did exactly the right thing. Our 10 month year old grandson had a high temp, lethargic and sick so the advice was take him to the triage tent at the hospital. Was taken to paediatric specialist and was diagnosed with tonsillitis    As you say it’s a scary place, everyone gowned up and very overworked. But they were happy to help and rule out the virus.

Completely insignificant in terms of the problems so many are going through but my partner and I got a decent bit of news today - our planned Summer holiday to Thailand can be pushed back a year by the travel company with no penalty or anything.

A bit of peace of mind that we won't be losing out on any money as both of our salaries have been reduced as a result of the ongoing crisis (my partner is a sub teacher so her salary has effectively been reduced to zero!).

Is a sub teacher supply ? I’ve not heard that expression before ... hopefully schools will be amongst the restrictions lifted next ... thats a decent holiday to be looking forward to ... :)

Good news for the good news thread.

Can I ask you northernringo, as early doors you seemed a bit of a facts and figures expert on the "shit" thread. Is all this sad news becoming less sad albeit still really sad? Basically are there any glimmers of good news yet in your opinion?

Mentioning teachers and looking forward to holidays!  You are risking this!

Ha, yes it is the same as supply teacher! Might be a Northern Irish thing maybe. She saw something on twitter that Scottish supply teachers look like they are getting some sort of financial package (probably a % of average earnings or something) so hopefully something similar over here!

I have sadly stopped tracking the figures of each country as it was generally getting a bit depressing! Also, when I started it was a big problem in SE Asia and a handful of cases elsewhere... how times have changed!

In saying that, I've been keeping up to date with the overall picture on a daily basis and follow some really good twitter accounts on the subject.

Sadly however I don't see any signs of optimism at the minute. The lock down seems to be working and all.... but what next? That's why I take 'success stories' like New Zealand with a bit of apprehension. Yea, they have done a great job so far but with a vaccine 12 months away what is their long-term plan in dealing with the virus?

For the same reason I don't tend to compare country to country figures as much any more. The UK deaths are awful and the Govt has no doubt made many errors - but comparing them to countries who locked down very early doesn't make much sense until this is all behind us for good. We could see these countries do much worse in future waves, etc.

Woops, forgot this was the good news thread and not the other thread!

I won't bring any more negativity to it :)

That’s good news. What were your plans for Thailand? Package trip? Might be worth looking at travelling there outside of summer as it’s wet season but teacher holidays are pretty written in stone unless your other half is not full time at a school.

Also a teacher.

Not a problem northernringo, thanks for your assessment and honesty. One more question but perhaps the answer may suit the shit thread more than this one...Is there any small chance of a vaccine well before 12 months away and how long would it take to vaccinate a large part of the worlds population?

Sorry that's sort of two questions in one, so Im expecting double good news!

I saw this and thought I'd post it here. It's really not that funny, and definitely does go on way too long. However, it does seem to amplify the mixed messages that have been given out.

Clarification of the lockdown rules:

1. You MUST NOT leave the house for any reason, but if you have a reason, you can leave the house.

2. Masks are useless at protecting you against the virus, but you may have to wear one because it can save lives, but they may not work, but they may be mandatory, but maybe not.

3. Shops are closed, except those shops that are open.

4. You must not go to work but you can get another job and go to work.

5. You should not go to the Doctor's or to the hospital unless you have to go there, unless you are too poorly to go there.

6. This virus can kill people, but don’t be scared of it. It can only kill those people who are vulnerable or those people who are not vulnerable. It’s possible to contain and control it, sometimes, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.

7. Gloves won't help, but they can still help so wear them sometimes, or not.

8. STAY HOME, but it's important to go out.

9. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarkets, but there are many things missing. Sometimes you won’t need loo rolls but you should buy some just in case you need some.

10. The virus has no effect on children except those children it affects.

11. Animals are not affected, but there was a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…

12. Stay 2 metres away from tigers (see point 11).

13. You will have many symptoms if you get the virus, but you can also get symptoms without getting the virus, get the virus without having any symptoms or be contagious without having symptoms, or be non contagious with symptoms...it's a sort of lucky/unlucky dip.

14. To help protect yourself you should eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand as it's better not to go to the shops, unless you need toilet roll or a fence panel.

15. It's important to get fresh air but don't go to parks but go for a walk. But don’t sit down, except if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant or if you’re not old or pregnant but need to sit down. If you do sit down don’t eat your picnic, unless you've had a long walk, which you are/aren't allowed to do if you're old or pregnant.

16. Don’t visit old people but you have to take care of the old people and bring them food and medication.

17. If you are sick, you can go out when you are better but anyone else in your household can’t go out when you are better unless they need to go out.

18. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house. These deliveries are safe. But groceries you bring back to your house have to be decontaminated outside for 3 hours including frozen pizza.

19. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but they can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.

20. You are safe if you maintain the safe social distance when out but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.

21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours ... or four hours...or six hours... I mean days, not hours. But it needs a damp environment. Or a cold environment that is warm and dry... in the air, as long as the air is not plastic.

22. Schools are closed so you need to home educate your children, unless you can send them to school because you’re not at home. If you are at home you can home educate your children using various portals and virtual class rooms, unless you have poor internet, or more than one child and only one computer, or you are working from home. Baking cakes can be considered maths, science or art. If you are home educating you can include household chores within their education. If you are home educating you can start drinking at 10am.

23. If you are not home educating children you can also start drinking at 10am.

24. The number of corona related deaths will be announced daily but we don't know how many people are infected as they are only testing those who are almost dead to find out if that's what they will die of. The people who die of corona who aren’t counted, won’t or will be counted but maybe not.

25. We should stay in locked down until the virus stops infecting people but it will only stop infecting people if we all get infected so it’s important we get infected and some don’t get infected.

26. You can join your neighbours for a street party and turn your music up for an outside disco and your neighbours won’t call the police. People in another street are allowed to call the police about your music whilst also having a party which you are allowed to call the police about.

27. No business will go down due to Coronavirus except those businesses that will go down due to Coronavirus.

Hope that makes things clearer for you?

Lolol

My mate who got sent home from hospital has popped back up on our vet's team whatsapp group.  In a wonderfully predictable display of sports team behaviour, now that we know he's home and safe he's back to getting the same amount of verbal abuse and pisstaking as the rest of us :D

Sadly I'm a numbers person only so don't actually know any more than a layman about vaccine programs, etc!

Yea, sadly we are consigned to July and August due to school holidays! Happy enough to take the risk with weather as we have been told you will see biblical showers some days but they tend to last for an hour and then disappear as if nothing happened.

The plan was to spend 3 nights in Bangkok ourselves, then fly to Phuket before doing a group island hopping tour around Phuket/Phi Phi islands. That tour was 6 nights and then we had another 5 nights in a quieter resort of Phuket ourselves relaxing before heading home! I'd imagine we will go for the same thing next year.

Good News! We might be engaged in a war with this awful virus but the Russians won’t get us! The flag is flying high today at our local secret nuclear bunker .  Sat outside it, I had my flask of tea, a wagon wheel and sang a few lines of two tribes go to war! Was a bit wary of the security camera watching me. If I disappear you all know what’s happened, I’ve watched Spooks!

Love that you describe it as a "secret" nuclear bunker.

Wagon wheels - mmmmmmmmmmm (even though they're more Lego wheel sized these days)
