Whilst cases reported today are inflated, I’d like to point out the specimen data for the last few days which for Monday 14th December still isn’t complete but shows a large jump in cases. This is a worrying sign if it continues.

If you think people will refrain from going to each others houses when the death rate is (hopefully) a lot lower because of vaccines, then you'll be disappointed. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot of rule breaking going on, especially as enforcement is a joke in this country. 

Why do you think this latest lockdown wasn't as effective? its because people aren't really following it im afraid.

Looks like cases are going up in all parts of the UK. Is there usually a Monday spike in the specimen date?

More like 26k. You can’t just ignore all the Welsh cases, you have to normalise them which suggests about 2000.

Because it was put in place too late, ended too early and wasn’t strict enough.

You’re spot on. There’s lots of low level rule breaking taking place as it is. Lockdowns are a blunt instrument that suffer from law of diminishing returns. I always suspected we’d reach the stage where compliance was so low as to render the Regs useless by Spring but that’ll certainly be the case now we have Vaccines on the way.

TBH i think this winter is pretty much the last chance for proper lockdowns. Its a good thing we have vaccines on the way or we would be properly in trouble!

Quite a morbid thought but I wonder how many of the care home residents vaccinated over the next couple of months will be alive this time next year anyway? Certainly not trying to disregard the importance of their life, but it is an interesting point.

I think the average life expectancy of someone who moves into a care home is in the region of 12-18 months. Tragically very few of these people are going to be around much longer virus or no virus, but I hope the vaccine at least means they can spend as much of their final months and years with their loved ones as possible.

and the other thing that isn't talked about is the manner of the death. Many of those will die peacefully with their family surrounding them (in normal circumstances), and if they're lucky it will be relatively quick and painless

There is growing frustration in Germany towards the European Medicines Agency (EMA) over its perceived slowness to approve coronavirus vaccines, particularly as the German infection rate soars to another record high, of over 30,000 on Thursday.

The German tabloid Bild vented its anger by posting a photographer outside the agency’s headquarters in the Amsterdam district of Zuidas.

What the photographer saw, the paper said, rubbished the claim by EMA chief, Emer Cooke, that it has been “working round the clock” on the vaccine approval process.

The paper writes: “The lights were on in some offices on Tuesday until shortly before 11pm”. It then shows the building plunged into virtual darkness, “before going on again at 7am”(on Wednesday).

Jens Spahn, the health minister, reportedly put pressure on EMA to speed up its process after facing growing pressure from Germans over why countries like Britain and the US had already been vaccinating for days, having given emergency approval to the vaccines, while Germany was still waiting for the green light.

Didn't Johnson say no more national lockdowns? Not that that counts for much, but I do feel like they might try to avoid it by just strengthening the tiers. As long as the Scilly isles are in tier 1 they can keep saying it's not a lockdown...
