Here's a lovely article from Tatler, to be honest I don't think I used strong enough words...

http://www.tatler.com/bystander/events/2013/june/the-pop-up-hotel-glastonbury-party#!/11343/image/2

Gosh!!!

The Pop-Up Hotel Glastonbury party

Black tie and wellies was the dress code for The Pop-Up Hotel's Glastonbury party, just a stone's throw from Worthy Farm. In came Lord Shaftesbury, suited and (welly) booted, and Lucy Cox and Jo Roderick in flowing gowns and galoshes. They downed Earl Grey martinis and tucked into hog roast (what else at a festival?) then bid all their cash on Glastonbury bricks from Glastonbury Reclamation Yard, among other items. Oodles of cash was raised for The Willow Foundation and appetites whetted for the festival ahead. But whether the guests venture out to the Pyramid Stage in their black tie remains to be seen.

They sound like fucking bellends to me.  Worthy View it 'aint.

I stayed off site last year, spent minimal time there. Was in the festival from about 9am til early hours.

Not sure how spending 7k (for the record, I don't have 7k to throw at it) makes you a bellend. In fact, to insinuate this sort of stereotype makes you more of one. . For all you know they might be nice, decent people who just happen to have more money than others banked, and don't mind spending it.

I'd even wager that if you are the social type you probably conversed with some over the 5 days completely oblivious to it.

For me I don't equate having £7k to spend with being a bellend.  But I would question whether Glastonbury is actually the festival that "these" people want if that's the kind of camping / festival experience they're after.

Every person like this (and it's just easier to write that than explain it every time..) who takes a ticket means that one less person who is camped in the main fields and getting stuck in.  The more of them there are, the more the nature of the festival changes. In all seriousness, do you really see people who would and are able to stay in one of these monstrosities getting smashed at the cider bus, sharing a joint and generally making Glastonbury the place it is? The emphasis and selling point of these, base don the blurb and the Tatler bollox, is very much to have somewhere nice and civilised away from everyone else, then dipping down to some of the music acts at the Pyramid later in the day.

No Green Fields, no Avalon, no Circus fields.  No Glastonbury.

And gradually it becomes a different festival.

Bear in mind that these people are probably paying a small fortune to 'do glasters yar' and help keep the normal ticket prices low, I'm not saying we need to be greatful but I'll allow myself a sly smug grim at their expense.

Ah, and we always come back to the question of whether the funds from this kind of shite is needed to keep the festival viable.  There's a whole 'nother thread on that one!

I thought that a lot of this "made in chelsea" camping was outside of Glastonbury Festival Ltd.  I thought that greedy farmers were renting land to these tossers to make a load of cash, non of which finds it's way back to the festival.  The only off site camping that the festival benefits from is WV I thought, I could be wrong though.

So were global temperatures. Correlation is not causation.

Other things that were lower - prices to book bands, wages, staff levels mandated by regulators.

We don't even know how much the festival makes from this abomination of a camp site.

To suggest that we should actually be grateful to these parasitic fun sponges is grotesque in the extreme

I'm not.  I'm saying we don't know.  I've agreed that they sound like bellends, but without the numbers, we can write figures on the back of fag packets all day long and still won't know whether the the money they put in makes it more or less expensive for the rest of us.  I'm not convinced that a few mega rich are putting the prices up on food and beer, but I dunno.

One thing to note for anyone saying they do make it cheaper, apart from Worthy View, the off-site camping profits are lining the pockets of the neighbours, rather than funding the festival.

The benefit to the festival surely comes from this type of thing making a tidy profit for the neighbouring landowners, so they're not going to object when its time for the license to be renewed again.

The bits we (at least I) don't know.  The mechanics of the festival's cash flow and local palm greasing are a complete blank for me.

Interesting note: The Refreshinator is actually the name that Sebastian Galbraith-Helps (yes, he was in that Tatler article) gave to his Butler who was pressing F5 for him on T-Day.

I think that's a key difference. As far as I'm aware the idea of WV isn't to have your own mini festival away from the main site so that you just pootle down when Adele gets on stage.  This seems to be very much that.  And it's horrendous.

That's your difference Stretlow.  You happened to be sleeping elsewhere, and for whatever reason that's your call to make.  But you were there getting stuck in all day and being part of the festival.  These are geared towards an incredibly sanitised version of Glastonbury.

It's a simple equation, I think I've read all but one of the immediate neighbours of the festival have a good relationship with them now. Glastonbury need a lot of these neighbouring farms and houses onside, that might be for access or so that they can use their fields. Glastonbury give these neighbouring farmers a load of tickets that they can the flog to rich types along with fancy accommodation so they can make a decent buck through the festival. It may not directly financially benefit Glastonbury, but indirectly it certainly does.

The off site camping is good though as most of them don't get on site until late and leave straight after the headliners. The queues to get out at gate B after Adele were biblical. Halfway back through Big Ground. All with chairs. Makes traffic a bit easier for a lot of the festival.

I did not know that. Imagine the queues in Shangri La if they all stayed on site

I agree with most of what you are saying above. That article is an absolute travesty, if these people are spending some of their day in and around these places and not in the festival then of course i'm firmly with you, you have to question why the fuck they have bothered. Those tickets could quite easily be in better hands.

My original point was in response to stereotyping people who would happily spend 7k on staying there as bellends, you simply cant.

Say for example I pulled the lotto, there are 11 of us going in 2017. I'd have no qualms paying for the best one there for my mates just because they're smart as fuck, in my opinion this doesn't make me a bellend. This wouldn't change from my festival experience last year, id still be out early and still be twatted and going home early hours but i definitely wouldn't be hanging around there in the day and I definitely wouldn't be wearing a suit and odd wellies either.

On your point of the becoming a different festival i supposed only time will tell,  i'm a relatively newby on attending the festival however I know a bit about it and the history, id say the festival is massively different from say even 10 years ago never mind 30, but this is the way of most things. Football being another example.

Id also say thought that (at the moment) the % ratio is massively in "our" favour and i cant see anything changing that, if the % levelled out the atmosphere would decline and no long have the appeal to them swinging it back the other way.

It's all guesswork though...

I stick with what I said. if i had the money. i'd def have a go at staying there.

    • Same’s happened at MSG recently with Rush and Phish alternating nights. I guess each band has its own unique production so their riggers will be kept busy
    • The rumour was uk arena tour late this year.  Same as Charli xcx cant be announced until Reading headline is done.
    • Latest from the sun at least is that harry is still headlining but Olivia has turned down a spot next year to work on new music and hope for 2028.   So they can't have Fender, Fontaines, Harry, Olivia and Madonna.
    • I mean I don't think EC and FFDP are borderline sub, they wouldn't be any lower now.   2025 is about as strong as Bloodstock gets yet this year only one headline would sub and the others would play 3rd down or lower.    Machine Head wouldn't sub at Download regardless of rarity, they don't sell enough tickets and I'm not sure Gojira would sub either. Their last UK tour was a mix of smaller arenas and academy dates. Ally Pally being the only London date, not even Wembley Arena.
    • live music / main stage will generally end around 11pm but theres dj’s and late goings on right till 4am if you are so inclined.   Drinks are about £7.50 a pint probably and yes theres lots of mixed drinks / spirits / cocktails available to buy   wonderful festival, back for my third year in a row and 4th overall
