At Primavera you get a normal fabric style band and also a little card that you have to scan in. I think this is probably because you don't stay on site and there is a last entry time each night. I love it because I like to keep the cards as I take my wristbands off as soon as I'm home, but I'm sure some people must have lost the cards during the festival!

Rock Werchter has a similar system although I'm not aware of restrictions.

The band itself is fabric but with a little plastic sleeve slotted in to it that you have to scan on your way in and out (the security get very annoyed if you don't scan!). I presume it is used for monitoring numbers within the arena which maximises safety and helps the festival manage staffing numbers on the fly.

They also have little totems outside or close to all the stages and if you scan in, it will link to your facebook and post where you are and who you are about to see. I personally don't like that idea but I guess it's just the festival's method of catering for the self glorifying, social media addicts who can't spend one weekend without a status update.

It's all an act Russy.  We know you livetweet the whole festival, your instagram gets 200 pics an hour and you have a tractor battery at the tent to recharge your various smartphones.

I was working with the wristband team at Boom last year and no there isn't a limit on how many times you can leave/re enter. The chip holds info of the ticket holder to stop ticket fraud. You also know exactly how many people are on site at any one time that's it

Oh my god. That literally sent a shiver down my spine.

Anything that automatically posts to social media would be terrifying:

"Pbird81 is at the Cider bus"

"Pbird81 is still at the Cider bus"

"Pbird 81 is still at the Cider bus"

"Pbird81 is skanking badly [vine link]"

"Pbird81 is doing Ukelele Kareoke [vine link}"

Lollapaloosa Berlin had cashless last year. Awful. The wristband chip is credited first.

Step 1. Go to bar...

Ask barman 'how much credit is left'.

Decide if you got funds.

No... then go away and top up electronically (if there is a signal), or top up with cash at one of only 2 cash tills.

Return to bar, buy drinks and then you're supposed to remember balance. Or return to step 1.

Unspent monies can only be reclaimed several days after the festival has finished. Not before. It's just a scam (yes another one) to profiteer from punters.

I expect it'll happen eventually, but Glastonbury is behind the curve on these new fangled technology things for a few reasons:

  • The size - there is a lot of geographical area to cover with network connectivity
  • The scale - at peak, there are a lot of people coming in. If they rely on this tech and they can't let anyone in for a couple of hours, there will be huuuge queues.
  • Limited Benefits - Glastonbury really doesn't care about Facebook, limited number of in/out or any other daft things. It's not a day festival, it's a five day marathon.  All they care about is making sure people who have paid get in and nobody else.
  • Manpower- Despite the (fairly true) protestations that Michael makes that the money is spread very thin, there is cash around. Glastonbury has a large headcount and isn't forced to look at technological efficiencies in order to make the festival viable.  They can afford to wait until the technologies are well proven before jumping in.  They just don't have to.  Glastonbury has plenty of places make cuts before they would have to risk the entire entry process.

Personally, I think we're 5-10 years away from wireless technologies being stable enough for them to make the plunge;

I certainly didn't see any electronic villager wristbands last year.

The only bit of technology I heard they were trialling last year was some sort of pin-pointing locations on site with a code- like GPS co-ordinates but more accurate... no idea on the ins and outs of it though.

As I think has been mentioned on here before,  the current method works because there is no reliance on a network or anything, simply manpower. The 3 part ticket (wristband, ticket and pass out) system whilst a bit of a pain works on the most part.

Didn't they try some sort of an easy pass-out wrist band last year?  Seem to remember hearing something about it for Worthy View residents.  Wasn't electronic but stopped the need for the 3 part ticket system.  Wonder if they'll expand that this year.

Ok I may be mistaken but there was def some other type of wristband for fast entry.....at Gate B there was a separate lane which I stood in until the security guy told me I didn't have the correct type of band.....he said they had a chip in them and folks going through appeared to be simply beeping in.....

    • 1. Baby Dave - Billy 2. A - Prang   Not really got round to listening to many more in May so not really fair to vote but shoutout to EPs from Bleech 9:3 - Bleech 9:3 & Villanelle - Measly Means
    • Guitarricadelafuente was bloody brilliant tonight. This is going to be a very Spanish focussed year for me. Rusowsky dragging out Las Ketchup on Saturday has the potential to be a Prima magic moment.
    • £112 for standard entry. No thank you.
    • Meanwhile Gracie Abrams is £92 for the cheapest with the average price around £160 for lower tier and £103 standing.   First time in a while I've gone from a definite yes to a definite no on price alone.   Amble was £31 this morning.
