TFI Slip? ELO

I think you might be overstating #WrongBazza's popularity here. He's just novelty isn't he? Never been that big in the UK charts or anything; just always been around wheeling out the songs he writes (but doesn't write) and being an icon of cheesy pop. I shouldn't imagine he's considered so highly of that the time would be finally right for him to play at Glastonbury or anything, like Dolly and Lionel.

far more recognisable name and songs than ELO to your average festival goer

and i don't recall anybody saying the 'time was right' when Lionel was announced - in fact i recall most on this forum saying it was a bit of a shit booking and that there was no way he'd be able to top Dolly

i'll go back on my statement of saying it definitely won't be ELO - they'd pull a huge crowd if booked - but, as much as it would pain many on here to admit, Manilow would be the far more popular booking, and at this time, makes far more sense

I know 6 Manilow ones and 18 ELO.

Could get Olivia Newtron Bomb as a special guest for Xanadu!

Manilow has always been seen as something of a joke though, hasn't he?

Loyal audience yes, but I can't imagine any of the people I know who go to Glastonbury being in the slightest bit excited at the prospect of him playing.

No doubt people could say the same about ELO but Manilow... really?

For me, Manilow. I know two of those ELO songs, and that's including Roll Over Beethoven.

Manilow, I know four songs and I know them all better than "Mr. Blue Sky"

Spot on.

It's typical of glastonbury's lack of imagination these days. The sunday cheesey act will be done to death until it no longer is any fun whatsoever and everyone is utterly sick of it.

See: the post-apocalyptic dystopian setting of the SE corner for further details.

Nope.  Just listened to it for 10 seconds or so... That was enough :P

I like ELO, and 10 seconds is enough for me too.

Strangely though, it's quoted almost as much as Mr BS as a fave track by people.

We're about 5 years away from it being the Spice Girls!

Evans said nothing about the headliners, just that he knew who was playing 'Sunday afternoon at Glastonbury' for the next two years. It is somewhat interesting that Glastonbury have 2017's legends act lined up already. Must be a pretty big one to have that sorted this far in advance. Or bullshit.

this is what I'm asking, Evans can only know who is playing Sunday afternoon if ME has booked them as well as the headliners that he mentioned he had booked, if he hasn't booked the legends as well then Evans must be talking about headliners.

i dare say 'legends' now have to be booked at the same time as headliners to guarantee getting an actual legend, so Evans probably was talking about legends but there is a faint possibility he is talking about headliners.

or it could be complete BS and he doesn't have a clue, or an in joke because they all know that Take That are doing it.

whatever the truth he has certainly got people talking, and more importantly for him, more people are likely to tune in to the next TFI Friday to see if there are anymore glasto slips.

It's tough to compare the two because it seems that ELO were genuinely pretty huge in their time but finished and haven't really lived on as a guilty pleasure/cheesy singalong act whereas that seems to have been Manilow's game for forty years. To the point he's released those same five songs (one best known as a Take That jam) as singles multiple times and on a ton of compilations and toured them every couple of years.

The thing is that Dolly and Lionel had the best of both worlds, didn't they? Singalongs and huge mainstream popularity in their prime. Manilow wouldn't attract anything like the crowd of those two because he's simply not as well known or loved as them, and I think in this case the Glasto-goers who actually like ELO (and those there for the few big singalongs) would outnumber Glasto-goers who hold Manilow as a guilty pleasure by a large amount. Plus they have barely played in 20-30 years and would probably be able to do a tour the size of Rod Stewart's latest one when the album is released, as opposed to #WrongBazza's latest arena run.

I think you'd be surprised. Lionel was way more popular than I thought he'd be, and I reckon that #WrongBaz would match him. In Copacabana and Mandy he's got a tunes that are easily the equal of Dancing On The Ceiling and All Night Long in terms of popular recognition.
