Right I'm kinda obsessed about Identikit, which means only one thing - a bullet list:

* It's soulful. Not Otis Redding level sure, but certainly up there with white man soul. Thom could join Jungle or Fine Young Cannibals.

* The 'Broken Hearts' backing vocal. Where did that come from? It sounds like a quartet of eunuchs.

* The melody. It's just gorgeous.

* The song structure. It goes all over the place in a mental, yet seamless way. Reminds me of early Simpsons episodes in the way it broadens scope on a sixpence.

* The guitar solo. All the more remarkable coming from the man who in the 90s made a career out of wild string bending and phaser, place it straight with a solo involving no bends at all, static FX and seemingly very little blues influence.

* The percussive sound at the end of the solo, like a clap of thunder.

 

I like the rest of the album, but this song has got under my skin at the moment.

Hmmm. Without in anyway wishing to go against my absurdly optimistic character, I am a wee bit anxious here, only because Phonica have form!

I'd be in NO way surprised if we got emails tomorrow apologising for their error and reassuring us that our unwanted refunds are being processed!!

yeah Identikit is my current stand-out/go-to track on the album. as you say, so many things going on in the song that seem totally un-Radiohead yet work so damn well

I don't think that's a particularly controversial assessment. 

It seems like the natural progression from In Rainbows, which makes TKOL seem all the more strange. It's almost like a bizarre spinoff album.

I'm with the Unicorn - It's the lovechild of In Rainbows and Amnesiac. In a really good way. You know, committed, genuinely care about each other, not just a product of meaningless sex.

While I agree on the mood/vibe, it's better than that. Deliberately more accessible, for sure, but best album since Kid A for me.

Right, final final post!

@jparx Phonica have now withdrawn the white vinyl from their site so...either we bagged the last couple of copies, or they've cocked up and we'll be crying into our cornflakes in the morning!

I reckon we might just have pulled it off, old pal!

I agree with the Amnesiac and In Rainbows but also bits of OK Computer. But it's very much its own thing isn't it. June 17th seems a long way off...

Maybe in rainbows was just too good to follow. TKOL taking one for the team for future albums to come.
