PEARL JAM TO HEADLINE 2016

No it couldn't as they're still a festival headlining stadium band as they have been since the last century. They were being offered $1m to do Portuguese festivals this summer. When have they ever had someone that big on the Other Stage?

This is the only thing I am contesting on this thread btw. I realise why they wouldn't be a good choice to headline the Pyramid but people are insane if they think Vedder and co. are going on the Other Stage.

Sadly I think the discussion is moot as I do not expect them to play. I'd love them too though.

They're too big a deal to play anywhere but as Headliner, but they don't have a sufficient critical mass of cultural impact to be a Headliner.

Ergo, no Jam will be forthcoming.

Edit: Should have phrased this "No Jam tomorrow"

Unless they record another album or massive hit song that travels beyond their fanbase and into the wider zeitgeist.

As opposed to Arcade Fire with their string of Number 1 Singles...?  Seriously, is this how we're valuing headliner status now, by singles chart positions?

Arcade Fire might be off the radar of lots of folks (as are PJ), but they are at least contemporary and so have a greater relevance as headliner.

Pearl Jam headline festivals all around the world. I suspect they and their management consider them a headlining band.

If Glastonbury, like Reading, Isle of Wight etc see them as a headlining band also, then maybe one day we'll see Pearl Jam headline the Pyramid. If they don't then I doubt Pearl Jam will get "the call" and if they did they'd say no.

ergo, if they play they headline.

Why would a band who headline everywhere else accept less then a headline slot at one festival?

No it's just Arcade Fire are a much, much better band and are much more relevant today as a band.

Better is just a matter of opinion. I've seen both bands live and have no doubt about which one I prefer.

Relevance is such a slippery concept, hard to define, but one that is actually affected by a Glastonbury booking.

True it is a matter of opinion, and with Arcade Fire being one of my favourite bands (and favourite band to see live) of all time I'm due to be biased. I just can't see past Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder's annoying voice which no doubt helped inspire the likes of Chad Kroeger and Alex Band of the Calling. I suppose I need to give Pearl Jam a better chance really. In terms of relevance Arcade Fire are obviously much more relevant at the moment, I don't think I'm being biased in saying that, but then again maybe I am.

well said 'zoid - music taste / who is better etc is down to the persons preferences and nothing else.

I don't claim PJ  >>>> AF  I just like PJ >>>> AF

Ha. There may be truth in it, but its unfair to blame Eddie Vedder for Nickelback, Creed, Puddle of Mudd, the Calling et al.

Should Faith No More and RATM accept responsibility for Limp Bizkit? Actually the bass player from RATM publically apologised for Limp Bizkit.

.....let's give credit where credit is due, Pearl Jam are a step above Placebo!

But yes, spot on. Why the hell would Pearl Jam come and sub Glastonbury? Take a smaller paycheck, play for an hour and potentially "devalue" themselves in the festival market.

Maybe one day they'll start having to take lower slots (See Smashing Pumpkins) but for now it's headline or nada!

Have to remember, Arcade Fire didn't pull a massive crowd. Just can't see a PJ headline set going down too well. "Pearl Jam? Oh, that grunge band from the 90s were they?"

Other Stage!

Alas, very true. Very true. Is Ten the best place to start with Pearl Jam? I have listened before and couldn't get in to it all to much but with the overwhelming support and general liking for them on here I may give them another chance.

Regardless of how good a live band or personal music preference, Neil is right in that AF (and I'm not a fan) are far more relevant atm (or more recently) than PJ are now.

PJ headlining the Pyramid, for example, would be met with a tsunami of indifference from Glastogoers as a whole. The wouldn't attract the merely curious in the same numbers as AF.

I'd say Rearviewmirror, the 2CD best of, to sample some of the later stuff too.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
