Alas, very true. Very true. Is Ten the best place to start with Pearl Jam? I have listened before and couldn't get in to it all to much but with the overwhelming support and general liking for them on here I may give them another chance.

Ten is a good starting point, but not particularly representative of what they're about. It definitely leans towards their more arena rock sound and they still play loads of it live.

Vs. is my favourite, its a bit more aggressive but also has more acoustic moments.

No Code is their most experimental and really put off a lot of long time fans at that point.

Pearl Jam - the avocado album, is a brilliant latter-day PJ album, very political and quite punky in parts.

Backspacer is short and sweet, with a more new wave influence.

So depending on your leaning, any of these could be a good in. But if you have a couple of hours I recommend the PJ20 documentary by Cameron Crowe.  I think it rises well above the usual band puff-pieces and gives a real insight into the band's history and their place in the broader music scene.

Cheers. I'll give them a listen then today on my lunch break and this evening. I'll start with Ten, again, see how I fare.

well all i can say is that some of you are nuts ...EVs voice is amazing but hey if you dont like it dont listen to it but as said dont blame PJ or EV for those other bands that tried to jump on the band wagon .......and they didnt last very long ......and as for "o that 80s grunge band " hell old son theve been going strong touring and selling out most every year

AF are still a young band and a pritty stite one at that and if you want to talk about voices fuck sake AF sound is yuk and theyve only done wot 4 albums PJs done 10 plus some great live albums they are also one of the only bands that sell every concert they do so you can get great bootlegs.

Is it Volbeat who were headlining festivals in Europe and opening the mainstage at Download?

Yeah, they are either head/co/sub in Europe but they are way down in UK.

I always thought that Jeremy is Pearl Jam's biggest song and I thought that they have bigger audience. I'm from "Europe" and not from UK, maybe it's different here. If you add them to any of the European's festival line up now they would be the biggest name I think.

Of course they would headline. How many songs by Neil Young or Metallica could the average glasto goer name? How many top ten hits have they had?  Pearl Jam have headlined IOW, Reading and a lot of festivals all over europe and around the world. One of the biggest acts in the world, regardless of their commerical popularity in the UK.

I would love for it to happen but don't think it will, need to see them live one day.

I've given up hope now.  It really needed to happen when they were playing backspacer (their last really good album) in the same way that REM were playing Up when they headlined, right at the point that their relevance was about to come to an end.

Sadly I've never been able to get into lightning bolt, in the same way that some of the mid-career recordings never set my world on fire either.  Ten and Versus are great albums, Backspacer and no code are really good albums and the rest of their output is ok, but nothing that excites me like those 4 records.

If they have one more belter of a record in them and the timing is right, that would be wonderful, I just think that that time has passed.

I'm not doing this just to be against you but I really wanted to know how many top 10 songs Metallica had in UK and the number is 4: Enter Sandman (5) Until It Sleeps (5), Nothing Else Matters (6) and St. Anger (9) and I was really surprised to see songs that are not from Black album so high on charts all around the world

didn't realise that had that many. Thought their only top ten would have been Sandman and Nothing Else Matters.

Yeah. When I saw St. Anger I couldn't believe  I can see how Until It Sleeps got there, first single after massive album and tour but how the fuck St. Anger got there I don't know.

Does anyone want to make PJ lists?

Ten
Vs.
Lighting Bolt
Yield
Vitalogy
Binaural
No Code
Riot Act
Pearl Jam
Backspacer

It's less to do with hits than it is to do with cultural saturation; with omnipresence.  Most folk have gone to a school where 25% of the males have suddenly had a teenage metal phase and so a lot of Metallic's imagery has a wide distribution.  For better or worse, they're widely known about. They're recognised.

would be so nice, but I think london will book them instead of glasto. there was a (maybe faked) tour list from PJ with two dates for london. anyway, let's hope and for sure, they need to start the concert with RELEASE! ;-) - see youtube milano 2014, goddamnit, almost cried :-)

By that metric, Ned's Atomic Dustbin were the biggest band in the world when I was in the 6th form!

    • Tbf that happened to me in 2022 so not a one off. 40 euros to drive down 3 streets. I'd have done a runner but the reason for getting the taxi in the first place is cos I couldn't walk no more.
    • I was fully prepared (waterproof jacket, extra pair of socks, foldable umbrella), but after four hours in the rain (from Geese through Oklou to Florence Road), it was just too much. Already at the hotel, let's hope tomorrow's better.
    • It’s rare that I watch question time, but I almost felt sorry for Kenyon, he seemed like a guy just brought off the street which effectively is what he was, made worse by the fact Burnham and the Tory guy were very strong debaters. I think Burnham was very aware not to go too hard on Kenyon and risk him getting sympathy, in fact he pretty much ignored him.
