Its the same bit! The edge of the bread. If you sliced the other way the edges would still be crusts

See, this is why you guys are wrong. 

In Scotland we have two distinct words for the end slices (ootsiders), and the edges of the slice (crust). You have the same word for each, which leads to confusion. 

This is one of the main reasons I voted Yes in the independence referendum.

It's simple:  The crust is round the outside of the slice, the crusts are at either end of the loaf.

... this is 100% correct. Also, an ootsider can, depending on your luck, vary from around half the normal thickness of a normal slice (you feel cheated) to around 2.5 times the thickness. Ya beauty. An ootsider has a very thick crust. But a very thick crust does not an ootsider make.

Just got in from work and noticed that there was a plain loaf in the bread bin. Get in there, just munching on hot buttered toast now. Living in England this is a treat and now only one left in freezer
