Spiritualized®

I've been a bit of an admirer of J. Spaceman's oeuvre for a long time, but have never seen him play live, missing him at some festival or another a few years ago due to clashes, I think.

From reading about people's experiences, I get the feeling that a Spiritualized® show could be either a bloody shambles, or an extraordinary, life-affecting experience. In that sense, that inconsistency of quality mirrors his recorded output. When he's good he's very, very good, and when he's bad he's Ghandi, to borrow a Ben Kingsley reference!

So, any love for the Space Crusader out there?

Where do we think they'll play.

As it stands, I fully intend to go watch them. I think they could turn up the full gospel thang and nail a Park headliner slot, but I doubt they'll be put there...

What do you think, folks?

Ben

In a similar boat. 'Ladies and Gentlemen...' still floors me, although I have to be in the mood for the rest of his stuff. Happily it seems he still plays a lot off that album.

Could play anywhere from high Park (although I don't see them headlining it), JP or Other.

PS Good use of the registered trade mark symbol!!

I could just foresee that if I was in a bit of a, ahem, tired and emotional state, some massive waves of 'Ladies and Gentlemen...' and things like 'The Straight and the Narrow' from 'Let It Come Down' could be quite (sorry) spiritual!

I've only seen him once at Bestival 2012 and he was really good but think he only played for like 45 minutes and played 5 or 6 songs. Can't remember if he came on stage late and set was cut short or that was how long was meant to get. Set list wasn't the best and most people were left disappointed.

I'll most likely see him but like most things on the line-up I'm waiting on stage times and day splits before deciding who I'm definitely seeing.

Last saw them in Belfast about two and a half years ago and it was superb.

I think it's going to be magnificent, although it's maybe dangerous to have such high hopes.

I'll be in flying form regardless by the time they take the stage, ready to reach a higher state of consciousness!

My plan exactly, Space Shanty...!

I'm really looking forward to this set! I've never seen these nor any Spacemen (Spaceman?) embodiment (Spacemen 3, Sonic Boom, Spiritualized, Spectrum etc - A lot of S's!) and my expectations are high

Ladies and Gentlemen.. and Lazer Guided Melodies are two of my favourite albums

I've seen him a few times and it's never been exceptional nor tragic, usually just Ok. Musically fine but often pretty flat and one-toned / one-paced.

Basically, don't go expecting much charisma or showbiz flair.

Don't be ridiculous, CG.

I shall go, as always, with absurdly over-excitable/enthusiastically high expectations, and then claim to all just how extraordinary it was, regardless of the truth of the matter.

Tell you what, I'm glad you said this. Was... making acquaintances with a lady at the time, and ended up missing Spiritualized. Always regretted that one (especially as she's long gone!) and never could bring myself to see what they played, or look into how it was.

Spiritualized are definitely top of my list to see out of everyone there, and I get the feeling I'll be seeing them alone - they'll be top 2 on a stage I imagine. Hoping for my beloved Park.

Spiritualized at Bestival was one of the worst times ive seen them, and also on the Park stage in a very cold very wet year,

But, on full form, preferably with a gospel choir and light show, indoors, in the dark they will make you lose your mind, maybe for ever.

I saw them years and years ago at a free Heineken festival in preston in a tent and they were amazing..

saw them last year at Hyde Park, mid afternoon in the sun.. and I wasn't disappointed ..

for a worst case scenario, mid afternoon in the sun on the other isn't that bad, but I'd prefer them to play last on the Park on Saturday :)

I think the Bestival'12 thing was just after he'd recovered from liver failure (?) so explains the short set..

The last time I saw him, it was all pretty run of the mill. Nothing very exciting. Only really brooke into life when they did a couple fo Spacemen3 songs and Ladies & Gentlemen...

I got to say, I love Spacemen 3 to pieces, and there's some very good (early) Spiritualized stuff but a LOT of filler. I'm not sure I can be arsed to go and see them again. Reckon I've seen the best of them.

I got Ladies & Gentlemen when it first came out. Meticulous packaging designed to look exactly like a prescription, blister pack inside the box, little leaflet with dosage etc, stickers on the box. Amazing thing.

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
