Does eFests spoil us?

I love the endless speculation on here as much as anyone, but would the lineup announcement be more exciting if it dropped out of nowhere and we had little idea of who was playing until they were announced? Or does the excitement on here make it even better when we find out?

I think it does a bit. I was initially dissapointed when i saw no huge surprises i really liked and a couple i was hoping for not there... Until i counted the fact that there were far too many acts there i could see to fit into a weekend. Now we can move on to the clashes obssession...

I've been having a great time these past few weeks in the Headliners thread. It's been great fun with one very odd person (troll) showing up under various different names as well which was a bit of an experience. Long may Efestivals carry on as it always has!

I suppose so, I was really hoping for Ben Howard and Alt-J this year, if I didn't know they were pretty much confirmed already by all the talk and speculation on here I'd have been dancing round the room, but instead I scanned through the poster and thought "yep there they are".

Death Cab were a shock for me, sure I read somewhere they wouldn't be here. The Fall and Motörhead too. Don't think we're spoiled, it's just pretty obvious that some bands / acts will appear, at least on here we can obsess over it. The headliners thread has been hilarious, funny as I don't even bother about headliners, yet I'm in there all the bloody time

one of the things that often occurs to me as aI spend hours trawling the forum, is that modern media in general has taken a lot of the surprise out of the festival.

Not even so much the line up, I think you can work out on your own who might be due an appearance out of bands & artists you like.

It's things like - 'Where to find the hidden stuff?', or my favourite thread on this theme ever (not from recently I add) 'Where is the best place for randomness?'

It is a credit to Glastonbury, that in the face of so many people having all the knowledge in the world in a small device in their pocket, they still manage to surprise us sometimes.

I think that trying to find all the 'secrets' out before the festival could spoil it. There is SO much stuff to stumble upon and be amazed by anyway.

To try and find out where hidden secrets are beforehand will take away the impact and surprise.

following the headliners thread and the guesswork of the lineups did mean i knew 90% of the lineup before i saw the poster...but then, thats probably a good thing...otehrwise i'd have probably been rather disappointed, but having been slowly drip feed the lineup, had time to think about the bands playing, i see there is actually a load of stuff ive never seen, (& perhaps wouldnt justify paying to see) so i can definitely select a list that will make my time well spent at the festival.

I try not to start thinking about who I'll see until I get there. Even then I try to limit myself to half a dozen must sees and for the rest I like to go with the flow.

So far all I've got in mind is the EFests meet, Patti Smith and The Moody Blues. There are obviously loads more but I like to discuss and plan when I arrive. That's what Tuesday afternoon/evening in the CV Field is for.

I get five minutes of buzz when I first see the line up that would possibly extend to 10 if I hadn't had a strong suspicion of who was going to be on it anyway because of being on here.

I get hours and hours of joy from you eejits on here though and wouldn't miss that for the world. :)

I would agree with the secret stuff, so much so, I try to avoid those threads because there is lots I still haven't seen! Last year I ended up in a life drawing class, which is one of the little gems of the festival. The unexpected things. As for the line up, since we have so much media, lots of news etc, we will always know what acts are playing were.

Saying all that - its great to attempt to engage with people who love the festival, music, art etc as much as I do. Its nice that many people get the festival...

For relative newcomers I feel there is a lot to be gained from browsing some of these threads, as the sheer size of the Place is so overwhelming that without some planning you'll inevitably miss out on so much.

For example in my first recent year, knowing where to find the right type of bar rather than needing to trudge around several before finding a decent pint, was a great help. As was understanding where to find the best action on a Thursday.

And following yesterday's countdown to 7 was infinitely more fun than just logging on to the site to find that the line up was out a couple of days ago.

Un '13 u ended up in that drawing class, was really great fun. It's the things you don't know about in advance but stumble across that makes the festival for me.
