Unofficially it must have been around the 200K mark on site now anyway for the last few years, maybe more. I guess this just makes it official. Encouraging about the increase in Wednesday events. Makes perfect sense that they need more staff to cover shifts for what is now a 5 day festival.

I was there the year before they built the new fence, and it did feel like double the numbers which at that time were about 100,000. it was absolutely rammed. Afterwards I remember a lot of talk of 100,000 tickets sold and another 100,000 got in over the fence. I know that doesn't take into account all the crew, but it's all anecdotal anyway.

2000 must have been horrendous if those estimates are true - there are times at the moment (albeit rare ones) where it feels a little bit tight for space. Getting away and into certain areas, big acts on Pyramid etc.

Every time any act finished on the pymamid from mid afternoon on was like a headliner finishing now, you just had to go with the flow, it was my first so I still thought it was magic, I was right and still is :)

"Horrendous" wouldn't be what I'd call it, but I wasn't camping on site. The weather was good, if my memory serves me, and everybody, me included, were intent on having a good time. So they/ we ... did.

2000 was packed but I don't remember it being dangerous...the crowd for Bowie on the Sunday was huge.

Does anyone know if there is a reliable calculation of crowd numbers for the pyramid field acts anywhere?

2000 was a right pain in the arse and I was lucky as I had a back stage pass so most of the time I was able to avoid the crowds.
Just getting from Point A to point B was a huge challenge if it was against the flow of the crowd or trying to cross over .
Our crew Camp was next to the Cinema field and overlooking the John Peel Stage and that path from the Pyramid stage to the John Peel Stage was like Oxford Street at Christmas.
If I was not working there I reckon I would have left early.

As said, no one really knows the true figure. At a guess I'd go for 250k. In all my times there it's the only one where I've felt slightly worried about the safety of myself & others. It was a real struggle to get around & how I managed to squeeze into the field via the top track for Bowie is anyone's guess.

Thankfully the weather was OK, but any incident needing emergency services could have been disasterous. I know there a some who still don't like the super fence, but it really had to happen.

    • Saw Model/Actriz at Primavera Porto at like 3am. Was amazing
    • From what I've heard this is very much Live 25 part 2 and no talk of a new album.
    • Yeah it's been over 20 years and I still don't get the logic of how a manager who Blackburn were about to sack was the solution. I bet some in the Newcastle board at the time felt Robson was soft on our squad but the fact that by the end of that season we had a squad fighting one another on the pitch and players falling out with the manager and one another was a bit of a disaster. Even if the weird irony is that he got to an FA Cup semi and the UEFA Cup quarters made him on one of the closest to a trophy.    Pardew having a great single season and immediately getting an 8 year contract is just hilarious in retrospect. It's amusing in some respects that Bruce tried hard to make a local boy come home angle work and yet Benitez was just a better fit with getting the fans on side. If Bruce was to have joined us, he arguably could've been a better fit in '04 - Birmingham to that point had done pretty well, he'd yet to get relegated or manage Sunderland and he seemed like a man on the way up. That's obviously different to now given his last job was a swift failure with Blackpool in League 1.
    • Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if they're advised not to do the fire/fireworks this year, I live in Crickhowell and we've had maybe 10 minutes of rain in total in the past couple of months, there've been a couple of big fires in the area (one peat fire above Blaenavon will be burning underground for quite some time yet) and all eyes will be on GM. Fingers crossed we get a good soaking next week 😁
