Next fallow year...

In the ACDC tread Neil predicts the end of the fallow year. I also can see that happening.

I really hope it doesn't. For many friends of mine who crew the event in many different capacities, the year off is a welcome breather, After a fallow year they return to the festival energised and full of enthusiasm, often feeling a bit jaded during the last of a run of four festivals.

I know that the above applies to me. Without the years off there is no way that I would have been to so many without missing one.

(Edited to mention that I thought I'd post it here rather than in the ACDC thread as it may have caused drift if posted after Neil's comment)

If you want a year off then just have a year off? With demand being so much higher than supply it seems a bit selfish to want the festival not to happen just so you can say you've not missed one?

I read Sawdusty Surfer's post as being born of concern for others, rather than entering the realm of being selfish. I think you should read through his post again. I have myself, several times, and still come to the afore mentioned conclusion every time.

It would be interesting to note your response after a re-read (assuming that you are willing).

I don't know if you are aware of what I do at the festival up in the Greenfields. It involves a total of about 4 weeks work for me for which I get paid a total of £300. I have a crew of 6 others who help from between 10 and 21 days each. That £300 has to cover food, haulage(numerous heavy loads as well as large vehicles and caravans), material consumables, tool breakages, beer etc etc. Funnily enough that £300 doesn't quite cover the cost. Would save me a bloody fortune in cash and ballache just to buy a couple of tickets.

To do it year in, year out probably just makes me stupid rather than selfish!

Finally, if, say every crew member to an average of one in five festivals off, too many core crew members, with specialist and unique knowledge would be missing and that would leave big holes in your festival which you would notice. I'm not talking litter pickers and stewards here.

I guess it's easy to misinterpret posts from time to time. On another thread over in the Discussions section, someone has accussed me of trying to be 'cool' by stating that I don't really know much about apps. I'm a little baffled as to how one could be considered cool for not knowing about these things. I guess, at the end of the day, he has applied a different 'meaning' to the words that I wrote, which in no way reflects what I was trying to say.

I think it's pretty clear what you were trying to do, Yog. Who is the coolest person ever? Fonzi. Did Fonzi know anything about apps? No. So by trying to say you don't know anything about apps, you're trying to compare yourself to Fonzi. But we've all read your posts, and we know you aren't him.

I had no idea that I was that transparent. You are right, of course, in that Fonzi is the coolest person ever. And yes, yes, I was trying to be him. I feel so ashamed and dirty now. Definitely not cool in any case. How could I have even have deigned to think that I could reach his level of coolness? I'm so sorry. So desperately sorry.

I would never consider Las Vegas as an alternative to not getting a Glastonbury ticket. Its a filthy city full of morons (both local & tourists), con artists, crap restaurants, out of date shows & naff hotels.

Its only nice(ish) at night when you're a bit inebriated & the Christmas lights are on & the Bellagio fountain show is all right once.

I didn't so much misinterpret it as misread it and completely miss the word 'crew'. Only just seen it now.

  • 1 month later...

Met an old friend of mine yesterday at a funeral. He said his brother has been fishing recently with the owner of the big estate near Winchester where festivals are held. Apparently ME has been chatting with the estate owner re an alternative Glastonbury there in the fallow year.

not sure how that would work for an event of anything like the same size, having been to quite a few festies there.

I've heard loads of different stories over the years of Glastonbury supposedly looking at that site, and while some might perhaps of been true in the past, I can't believe anything within the last decade is true.

There's simply no need to have a fallow year at Worthy Farm any more. That the fallow year is for the farm has been proven as fallacy via the way it changed from 3 years to 4 years and then 5 years and then (as a one off for the olympics) 6 years. And it's not legally possible to enforce a fallow year via the licencing under the rules that have operated for the last decade: a site and plan is either suitable for a festival or not.

I thought the reason for the fallow year was to give the farm and the organisers a rest etc?

I wonder when ME packs it in and EE fully takes over we will see the end of it?

Like LondonTom says..2017 - no Glastonbury or World Cup/Euros in the summer! :(

I was making the point about the farm that it doesn't really need a rest.

And the organisers aren't getting a rest if they do it somewhere else - it would be a whole lot of extra work, because they have no plans or experiences of that site.

I don't really see Emily wanting to end it in the short to medium term (and perhaps long term) by her own choice, tho I guess the big issue would be what happens with the farm itself. Michael has a number of other children, and presumably they'd be some sort of sharing amongst them of his estate.

There was also mention of a huge shift to the B&W Showground. This is the result of alleged 'outrageous' sums of money now demanded by landowners adjacent to the festival, without whose land the festival could not happen in its current form. I can't say if all this is absolutely true, but my friend that told me doesn't live in fantasy land. Caveat..could be Chinese whispery. Who knows? (Considering the investment in infrastructure at Worthy over the last few years)
