Electronica/Dance

And there we go, found one! And not just a make-do. OMG, this is flippin' perfect!

Been wanting to see Oscar Mulero's dark and brooding techno for years. Saw A.Morgan about 6-7 years ago in Brum and he was fantastic too. They should both be fantastic in the intimate space and always great vibe of The White Hotel.

Anyone fancy a full-on night to start the new year, let me know.

Sooooo excited now!

Seriously, team, at some point can we have a convo about whether its actually possible/fun/necessary (!) to try to dance to techno at 148-150bpm.

What do people do with their feet? At that tempo I am genuinely restricted to either (a) dancing at half-tempo 75bpm, (b) jump up as if slow DnB or (c) standing with feet planted sort of punching the air! All the tracks sound identical (old man comment) at that tempo and the reverbed kick drum just punishes your brain with no nuance, subtlety or musicality (for me!).

WTF is going on?!

The annoying this is that someone like Amelie Lens started playing driving, beautfully tempo'd stuff, and now is a slave to dropping the track to a thumping kick between almost every track. It's infuriating! Contrast that to, say, DVS1, who still dedicates himself to creating a genuine narrative of transition through his set and...i dunno. Is it the drugs? Is it less md and more ket/coke that is, in part, fuelling this harder-faster (stupider 😉) trend?

Answers on a postcard...

Ben

Good to have you back, Captain. Yeah, my days of 150/160bpm techno went out the window in '94. That said, I have been revisiting some old Colin Faver, Easygroove, Scorpio, Lenny Dee and Trevor Rockcliffe sets from around that time, just for nostalgic reasons more than anything. That "Big Deal" track by Norman I posted a few weeks back is a definite favourite from way back. No wonder I was nothing but skin and bones back then.

I'm happy to nod along at a steady 135, 140 max these days but beyond that and it's all Gabba to my old legs and ears. I met up with some kids at G last year and they introduced me to some wacky new crazy bpm electronica, I have no idea how to classify it. It sounded like the soundtrack to one of those dance revolution arcade machines. Bonkers. Apparently it's all the rage amongst the uni kids. I dunno. I guess we do everything faster when we're young?!

said in another thread but I really think Fred is on track to headline Glastonbury. I’ve not seen a dance act galvanise people like this in a long time and it seems he’s managed to perfect that tricky space between underground music and mainstream pop. I really think his next release will be one to watch.

can see it now. Their first choice act doesn’t work for 2025 and they give Fred the call. Stormzy style it will be divisive but it will once again show Glastonbury as a festival willing to give emerging talent the leg up.

It's a bold but not completely outlandish take. I can see a future developed live set with guest artists dropping in. The overall production would need a serious upgrade of course, but that would come in time too.

It's about time an electronic act stepped up and headlined the Pyramid. It's been far too long, considering how popular the genre is.

You might be onto something here...

Although, the more mainstream Fred gets, the less popular he'll become amongst the purists. I really like what he's doing at the moment, exploring a few different genres and capitalising on this early momentum. Seems like he's working extremely hard. I would say though, I don't think he's producing anything that's not been heard before

with pinkpantheress having hits that are just straight up garage, I wonder if Fred doesn’t need to go that commercial to become more successful. I hate to mention Tik Tok but there’s a bit more interest and acceptance of underground sounds in pop music than before.

I don’t think he needs to go all out Calvin Harris style to become a headliner.

Fucking attention seeking dickhead. Just dance, FFS. Complete vibe killer for a while, that must have been.

Ditto moshpits at DnB events. Maybe I'm getting too old, I dunno.

Moshpits at D&B raves are the worst. Luckily, the D&B nights I go to usually don't have them.

Tried all three links on Saturday and no luck. sold out so quickly, unsurprisingly. No idea how people got them, but i guess some non-bots have to... Very jealous

Got a ticket to GF so if they repeat that on Arcardia that will more than make up for it.

I can see them each doing their own sets plus at least one b2b2b each day in various areas
