Hmm, I don't think that many new people know about it until a few weeks before unless their friends who have been have told them.

I think its more the hype & amount of coverage it gets from the BBC + social media eg seeing mates pictures of all the weird & wonderful goings on that aren't available at the other big fests.

its a great festi and one that appeals to all ages but unlike some festis the oldens dont stop going till there OLD and the young ones well they just keep coming .

after they have done 2 years at Reading /Leeds they seem to progress to glasto which imo most of them are not grown up enough for ....ie throwing piss in bottles ect lol

I didn't get a ticket in 2011, Facebook was absolutely on fire that night she was shown on the BBC, I'd never seen it like that before, and nothing like it when I've got back since, save from a couple of Mumford wetbags last year.

There's loads of different things that have caused it, really, I just want to talk about this one. It's obviously not just Beyonce, but she's the biggest example of the pervasiveness of pop music (and many other more diverse genres these days) at Glastonbury. A few years ago, all my mates thought it was a granddad's rock festival full of sad old hippies, the only person that wanted to come with me was my dad. My friend who I have been with the last 2 years would never have even considered that festivals were for her if she hadn't watched Beyonce on TV, she thought they were for old fogeys watching The Who and Slipknot fans pissing on each other and being robbed. After she saw Beyonce on TV she realised that it was for loads of different people and all about having a good time, there's more the Glastonbury that the stereotypes. It stands to reason that the more diverse it becomes, the more popular it will become.

This video has helped attract new people despite being over four years old & not showing much of Arcadia/Shangri La which was in the same area back then.

I go into hibernation the week before td, and don't speak to anyone other than my 'usual' Glasto crew for fear of recruiting that one pal that has had no interest but then jumps on the band wagon the day before registration closes. It's the general short of the mainstream towards festivals and the shift of Glastonbury towards the mainstream. It's an entirely different beast from say 30 years ago in terms of facilities etc. Means that people who would never have considered it back then now think it's a feasible way to spend a week.

Blame the BBC, and all the hype. No doubt its the best festival out there, I think its got far to big, Yes the more that go the money Eavis has for his charities, but for me its not as good an experience as it used to be. Will I be going....of course I will if I can get two tickets, camping..well this time its Worthy View, hopefuly a bit more organised. It could do with another very wet year, may put people off for future festivals..lol

I remember strolling into HMV but that was a bloody long time ago, I also had freebies a few times, but that's another story. We chose coach this year just for better odds as this is our thirtieth year too. TBH this is one of the major achievements of my life

It's important to say that one of those years you're saying was less bad I spent 16 hours solid on the phone and multiple browsers before succeeding!

Mixing up the style of headliners - which is a good thing, in my opinion - must be a major reason for the increase the pool of people wanting to go.

So Beyonce, Rolling Stones, Jay-Z, Metallica etc being broadcast on tv would attract a whole new audience who think "oh maybe it is for me after all".
