I'd agree with you to a certain extent, however some massive bands like foo fighters, arctic monkeys, coldplay have their fans talking about them whether they are touring or not.

i'm pretty sure Muse fall in to that ballpark too - here we are, talking about them, with an album that could be a good year away. same with small bands. just because you're not personally hearing about a band doesn't mean that their fans aren't talking about them

(also, the bands you mentioned have never been more than a year or two away from releasing a new album after a tour has ended - even Foos with their many 'hiatuses')

Are people talking about Arctics now as much as they were a year ago? Were people talking about Foos as much a year ago as they are now?

Anyway Muse have a huge diehard fanbase but their more casual one is diminishing as. The years go by so their popularity is naturally waning. Doesn't really matter though as they'll never drop off significantly now but it may make them a less appealing booking eventually.

Anyway it depends on the act, the more mainstream/bigger an act is the more casual fans they will have, the more they will seeminly be talked about. Coldplay are a great example there, as everyone knows Coldplay and Chris Martin has more of a celeb/gossip status outside of the band. Dave Grohl does to an extent too but with a slightly less mainstream/radio 2 listeners crowd.

Where as Muse are pretty much known for doing their music and thats it, so when they haven't got a new album out/tour obviously people talk less about them.

Few people have mentioned kings of leon in this thread. Would argue muse and kings of leon are both in a similar position, both have hit the stadium level, are now focusing on the fan base they have, rather than trying to win over more people. Naturally, with that, some of the fair weather fans will drop off, but both bands are still a big deal!

I think I would agree to an extent that Muse are defo planning on making an album "for the fans" with the next one...which demographic and what you define as a Muse "fan" is open for debate.

I was listening to some YouTube 'covers' last night which really got me excited again.If anyone hasn't then check out a channel called 'vkgoeswild' and her muse covers.I totally love them.

In my opinion Muse's peak was 2010. Although The Resistance was a much poorer album than the previous two, they were unquestionably the biggest festival headliner that year.

I think they have declined slightly since then. Their olympic song went down like a led balloon and after 2nd law it seemed like they suffered a slight identity crisis.

That being said, they are still festival headliners and they could still easily get a number one album regardless of quality. I think they will remain that way for at least another 4 or 5 years before they start properly declining

I meant it was more a case of muse doing whatever they wanted, rather than needing the big radio singles etc. Even In a slight decline, they are one of the biggest bands of the last ten years.

They've tried to have big radio singles and failed, survival, madness, panic station, undisclosed desires etc

weirdly i remember seeing people question Stevie Wonder being the headliner in 2010. can't remember if it was on this forum or another but i definitely remember seeing a fair few people wondering why he was on the top of the bill and not in the legends slot

(not that this means anything as he was clearly a huge headliner and these people were clearly morons. just sayin')

I'd guess just going into the studio, or since its linked the site, the start of the marketing push so might be a date annoucement.

But we can hope it will suddenly drop (As I believe the terminology is these days )

Yep very true, lots of people suggested the legends slot would be a better place for him on here and to be fair, I think even though he smashed it, I doubt the crowd would have been as big if you had a bigger acts on the other stages. (If I remember rightly it was Orbital and Ash on the Other/John Peel?). I doubt Stevie could do sell out 3 UK stadium daates on top of 2 festivals in one summer

Though I'd say U2 would have been the biggest headliners if they had played, I remember Q billing as sort of titans of stadium rock going head to head before they pulled out

I was so looking forward to taking an ex to go see them as she really wasn't interested in much of the line up but we both just sat there bored & got drunk at Reading. It was dull, must have had a new album out I wasn't aware of.
