Personally I think they should keep allowing people to bring flags, but there should be a rule that the flag itself must be on a pole that is at least 40ft high to avoid blocking anyone's view.

:D

Let's have these as well...but never ever get rid of the flags.

The unique appearance of a Glastonbury stage with the colour and movement of the flags should not be lost. You would miss them if suddenly one year they weren't there and you just had a see of mobile phones to distract you.

It's a unique and special place - enjoy all of it !

  • 4 weeks later...

I dont wanna hijack this as a flag hating thread but the flags at the stones last year really restricted my view. Now I've heard it said that the headlining spots on the pyramid would not look as spectacular without flags but I really disagree. If it all about flags then Mr Eavis doesnt need an incredible looking stage, screen or lighting he just needs a raised up platform some regular white lights and a few other cheap bits and bobs as its the flags people want to see.

Nope, I'm not buying that.

Flags are a pain but if your worried about flags and beachballs then if Metallica take to the stage you're gonna be very disappointed indeed.

There are few things in life I feel strongly about and flags at glastonbury, is one.

The first argument against removing them is that the festival opens on the Wednesday morning and if your view of any stage is so important you are welcome to use the festival guide to identifiy the time and place of your favoured view and obtain a spot with plenty of time to secure an unrestricted view.

The second is flag policing, and preceeding definition of what constitutes a flag ( size, shape, height, view restriction...). The man power involved for the first year flags become illegal will be huge and may increase the cost of your ticket.

The third is that although you may be sober as a judge you will be obtaining some change in your brain biochemistry based on the moving colour and will be making you happier. Have you ever turned round at the pyramid stage and seen what is behind you. The array of colourful flags, on the background of the colourful tents, beautiful sky, some amazing tunes and the atmosphere in the crowd will be making you happy, and in some way opening your doors of perception and enlightenment, taking you to a higher plane. Colour stimulates emotion.

Fourth - there is currently no law in the country against flags (although apparently God hates them...(sic). We do however live in a society where people will positively respond to you when you ask nicely. I am sure if you asked me to move my flag (you will know its me - it will have a bunny like the one I have as my photo on it) - I would say "no problems mate - fancy some glitter on your face, i have blue, red, green or pink.

I agree they do get in the way. But you know now, with months to go, that flags may be in your way, so get there early. I have no interest in family at home seeing me on TV.

They are a central part to the festival experience - hence why the organisers put them up around the festival site.

Your flag won't be blocking the view of the person behind you, unless you have the shortest flagpole (fnarr) in the world. How do you suggest that someone 20 or 30 rows back taps you on the shoulder to ask you to move? And even if they had go go gadget arms, then when you move it, you'll just be blocking someone else's view and they may not have go go gadget arms so they wouldn't be able to ask you to move it.

And also, people on other people's shoulders is also fucking inconsiderate.

Your tall people argument is a load of bollox as people can't help their height. They can, however help putting their mates on their shoulders or carrying falgs.

So the issues are:

Flag DNA (and lack thereof)

Intent of waving flag (including purpose of flag/selfish feelings of waver of said flag/desire to be centre of attention)

Restricted view

If my flag is in the way, you could bring some paper and a pen, write me a note, and pass it through the crowd. And I will move it. My address wil by Mr Magical Glitter Bunny, 20-30 rows in front, Pyramid Field, Worthy Farm.... My flag pole will be made of a wooden branch from a willow tree in my garden and the flag will be made of flowers (all with DNA and all with the ).

My intention is to wave my flowery willow flag so vigorously that its fun - you can have a go of my flag if you want as well.

joking aside...its the restricted view - and I can understand how that may bother some/many people It doesnt bother me at all. If you havent been on someone shoulders before - you should try it. Being up there at stage level was amazing - if only for a few minutes.

If it matters to you - change your position in the crowd - everyone has their own experience and mine includes the flags.

This is a joke thread surely?

Peopleidiots bring the flags so they can identify where they are on the telly and so folk can find each other, rather than learning how to do it without a flag i.e. lazy wimps.

Beach balls would utterly fail in this purpose.

The flags are NOT an iconic sight. The band you have come to see are the iconic sight. What you are meaning is "It looked great when I saw it on telly so I like seeing it in person too" without a clue what the view was like before the flags and I can tell you it was fantastic - you could see the performance AND listen, surely you're aware how much better an actual live gig is than listening to a bootleg? How a band's performance matters? Part of the incredibly clever positioning of the pyramid means you can see the band on stage from everywhere in the field

Sorry, I mean USED to be able to see the band. The flags might look great on telly but Glastonbury would do well to heed the money paying ticketholders who came to see bands, not what someone found in the flagshop. Someone will quote the survey - but that was open to non-ticketholders too so useless - the event is for ticketholders, we are NOT paying to be performers in a tv show. Those who like the look of the flags get something better - the view of the stage and the band they came to see so they're not losing out either. Would be cheaper and easier for the BBC if they didn't have to flagdodge with cameras too, and more excitable crowds would make up for loss of waving obstructions. It's win-win-win. I cannot fathom why they still allow them

All in favour of banning flags say aye

(and do something about it, then you can be happy that you changed the world, and made it a better place)

If flags are such a problem at Glastonbury I challenge those who are against them to do something about it.

I like the flags, quite happy to actually see the act on stage briefly I don't need to see them for the whole time but if I really do want to look as well I can get down the front or watch on telly later.

    • A win is a win but it was a very poor game with only 4 shots on target in the whole game. Scotland obviously handed a massive bonus with Brazil and Morocco drawing but I don't think either of them will be too worried.
