Firstly hello I have been reading the topics on here with great interest. Now to my subject I have been watching some past glasto performance from the levellers to cypress hill and one thing I noticed is the crowds are no longer as hyped and as mental as they used to be. As I only done my first glasto last year can any one enlighten me on what has changed the crowds so much. Also are the artist getting more dull.http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pCMj7yPa6Hg

and hello back,

in reply to the question - I've only been going since 2002, so dunno what it was like with XX,000 gatecrashers added to the site.

I suppose that's a factor, and you could also take your pick from - people being too cool for school/ older and wiser/ respecting the farm/ decide to pace themselves cos SE corner is open till 6am and they wanna party up there after the main stages close... ? sheer speculation on my part, but that's what this forum is mainly for :)

I've only been 2009, 2011 and have been in plenty of rowdy crowds!

Also Cypress Hill are/or were renowned for making any crowd rowdy as fuck, especially in 2000 when they were arguably at the peak of their popularity after a lull in the late 90s + you didnt have the super fence so you got a lot of people breaking in and in general the type of people I associate with that sort of behavior are more likely to be rowdy in crowds. Also the music that is popular these days is a lot more laid back then the sounds of 2000

I'm not one for rowdiness it just seemed watching some past clips that bands where a lot more up for it and the crowd where also. I can't really comment as last year was my first time but things like the charging tent made me giggle why would spend hours to charge your phone your at glasto. Also seemed like a lot of so called cool kids didn't want to get dirt under there nails

Glasto used to be seen as a fringe event and a massive challenge. This puts off a huge swathe of people who demand a certain level of luxury and detest putting in effort.

So you got folk desperate to go for the music and event itself, pre-prepared to go wild

Now it's mostly seen as a luxury event with a good degree of comfort. Just look at the photos in the Mail etc - vast majority of pretty fashionable girls in hippy costumes and Hunter boots. This attracts a very different audience who weren't interested when it was seen as all mud-encrusted hippies and rough camping

Simple marketting.

Cheers for all of the replys guys much appreciated. I sat and watched the bbc documentary last night as well, so i could see for myself it looked like it lost a bit of its edge in 2000 when the fence went up to stop all the gate rashers also when they stopped the travellers also. Have to a admit I would love to see the levellers back at glasto there gigs look great.

To me the whole live music culture and the way bands were followed used to be quite different - fans felt more a part of a particular music culture whether it be indie, hippy, goth, crusty whatever. These days its all get the iphone out and get the pictures on facebook asap.

For the main stage crowds, I think to many people at festivals in general just go along to an act cos it's what their groups doing and the one person in the group whose a massive fan has dragged them all to the front. So you've just got loads of people for acts who'd really rather be somewhere else.

    • Seems the addition of the Sun Stage area is interesting. Suspect this is the area where the Stage 4 used to be pre-2024. Looks as though they want to try create some space to keep people in amongst the arena post-headliners, rather than just crowds all descending back on the campsite entertainment at once.
    • 2000 Trees - 3 Day Tickets on Concert for Carers to buy (pair £15) sure they will not have them for long, I cant check if they are still available as it now says I have already bought tickets.
    • times and technology has changed , a pyramid headliner is often about the show thats put on as much as the music like it or not and as much as many would like to you cant really blame an artist for trying to get the best out of the set both for the audience in the field and for the cameras also .... Beyonce was 15 years ago
