Having camped up there for the last 2 glastos, I have a few comments to make.

The first time we camped it was run by Myhab and, I think I am right in saying, that there was approx 1000 people up there. The tents were put in rows and you could book 'your spot' with your team name so that you were all together. We actually took our own tents and put them up as well, oops. You could also take home the tent and I still have a few in my garage lol. With this many people, and the set up, the vibe was good, coupled with the showers, very clean toilets and pampering area for the woman in your life, it was actually 'bob on'. The car was parked 2 mins from tent and was packed with beer and supplies.

Last time (2011) was quite a different experience. With the site over sold, and tents strewn around so you could put them up where you wanted, it actually reminded me of being on the site but obviously with the added extras. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the festival and massive thanks to GFL for bailing us out. It would of been chaos if they hadn't.

Generally it's a good spot if you don't mind walking, up hill. It's bad, really bad, but it's only a short walk, just very steep. There's a cool place to sit and watch from afar and it's a great view. Food and drink is also available up there for a reasonable price. The drive in and out with the car is great. If you use your noggin you can avoid most of the traffic, having said that we were heading for the M5 so not sure what it is like for other directions. I suspect it is far easier in and out generally.

My big gripe with this 'off site camping' is dealing with the ticket situation everytime you go in and out of the site. Ridiculous, but probably no other way around it. You have to show your wristband and original ticket! with this, if you are going in (or out, I can't quite remember) you are also given a stub which you need to keep, and do not lose, at any cost, otherwise you are grilled, stretched on a rack and have you eyes poked with knitting needles, hot ones. A mate of mine lost his stub and was given loads of grief. Not a great to start or end your day/night.

Overall, if you need clean toilets and like a shower then I would say go for it. If you are like me (old bugger) and like a clean, safe camping environment with cheap beer close by, do it.

Top tip. If you are unfit I would suggest a little bit of training. Something like, walking on a treadmill at it's highest setting with wellies, silly hat and a rucksack full of cans.

For those that want 'a dig' about off site camping and "it's not Glastonbury" well, Glastonbury has changed anyway. My first was 1984. Peace.

I think you'll find that's the same for everyone isn't it?

Does anybody know around how many tipis there are on site and how fast the on-site tipis sell out? I would've guessed there's around 500 tipis but I'm not sure. We're looking to get one in April, will it be as hard as it was to get a ticket back in October?

Hmm, the point is that most people are on site and would only have to go through the gates once. When camping off site you need to go through all this ticket business everytime you go back and forth to your tent. Not really complaining it's just a bit of a ballache, sometimes queueing to get in and out, albeit only for a short time. Most of the time it's straight in and out.

Although I think it will all sell out, the question of time is the crucial factor. It is January and you can only pay by debit card which is an absolute bastard of a decision. So the question is do I risk leaving it till I get paid and then miss out or do i have no money for the next 2 weeks until I get paid.

I really cannot see the reason for not being able to pay with a Credit card.

I understand the extra costs of CC bookings but it really is pennies, the maximum CC charge is about 2.5% and I am sure they could have got Seetickets to pull that back off the punters after all they are used to charging booking fees for doing "Fuck All".

The hill is bad, but like has been said it is not too long. The overall walk from the Stone Circle field to the camp site only takes about 15 mins in nice dry conditions, maybe less even. Unlike the Friday night after U2 in 2011 when it was belting it down with rain, it took quite a bit longer to drag my drunk wife up the hill then :sarcastic:

I would say if you have any knee, leg or hip injuries then to probably give it a miss, but thats just my opinion

see have cut their fees to the minimum for Michael already, which is why it's debit cards only.

If ticket agents get money for nothing, why isn't everyone doing it?

God can't people even cope with putting up their own tent anymore! Can guess why this has happened though - they've thought well better and safer to run an official off site camp and encorage people to use that if they like that option, plus will get some money out of this and into the festival accounts, some of which will contribute to the charity 'dividend', so fair enough. Worked Pennard Hill gate in 2011 and can confirm that the hill is considerable and the ticket fuss got annoying for some, but that's the way of things if you want to go off site and you'll just have to deal with that if you want the convenience of an instant campsite.

Just a word of warning for anyone thinking about an off-site option, whether camping or CV fields - searches.

As well as having to remember your ticket/pass out each time you go in, last time there were also random searches going on of people re-entering from the CV fields.

If you camp in the main site you've only got to get your 'contraband' in once. From these outside sites you've got to get it in daily.
