After a run of very lacklustre films from Marvel, the new Guardians was actually pretty good. Quite moving in parts too. I mean ,still too long and baggy and could've done with about 30 mins cut but that's just the way with these films now.

I really enjoyed the main story with all the Guardians, but I thought the whole Rocket B-plot with his animal pals interrupted the main plot a little too much and kind of took me out of the moment a lot, and I also thought Adam Warlock was completely wasted and felt really tacked on. I’m not too familiar with his character in the comics so maybe I’m wrong about this, but I thought his whole personality (perhaps intentionally from Gunn) was all off, and I think Gunn’s Marvel firing and then re-hiring kind of took away any anticipation for that character all together but they had to include him due to that Guardians 2 end credits scene.

A much better film than anything Marvel has done for a while for sure, perhaps the best since Endgame, but definitely overlong and maybe trying too hard to pull on your heartstrings at times.

Also thought a few of the song choices/needle drop moments were a bit off and he was trying to cram in as many as possible. Some worked, some not so much.

Spider-man across the spider-verse. Really good and very enjoyable

I thought it was excellent. Well-animated, good characters and vocal performances, grappled with the multi-verse concept better than the main MCU is doing. Considering a lot of comic films are getting a bit repetitive, it is good to see it as something better than those.

This comes out next week, and I'm kinda bemused the various scandals that followed Ezra Miller around in 2022 didn't lead to this being canned. I know we can argue about cancel culture and separating art from an artist until the end of the world, but the sheer quantity of legal trouble he got into last year did make me think this might be held back.

It's also kind of in an odd place given it looks like DC has hired James Gunn just to reboot everything anyway.

Tried watching Avatar 2 last night and gave up halfway through. I really was quite bored in a seen it all before type of way.

I watched it a few weeks ago and think it ended up taking me like six hours to get through it all as I kept having to pause it and walk away and come back due to it being so boring. Visually incredible, but god is the plot just so thin. Can’t believe this is what the guy who directed Terminator 2 is dedicating all of his final years to.

The Flash is pretty good. The non-superhero stuff works best, and Miller is great as 2 different versions of himself. Very interesting take on an origin film too. Some proper big laughs - I was absolutely howling through an early setpiece.

New Indiana Jones is good. Not as good as the original trilogy (yes, even Temple of Doom. I have a real soft spot for that film) but so so so much better than the 4th. Lot of fun moments, some really lovely ones, and I did like Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character.

It absolutely needs to end now though.

So stoked for this. I know Cruise is a complete nutter in real life, but goddamn can that man deliver excellent cinema blockbusters, and I’ll be sad once these films are over after next years apparent final one.

We sure it's not going to be like the Fast and Furious which has turned it's finale into "3 more films"?
