Just came across this article about the Vodafone Network on site this year. TL;DR: here's the juicy stats! https://techhq.com/2023/07/how-did-vodafone-supply-festival-telecommunications-glastonbury-wimbledon/4 points

Along with the "rumors" that they've had offers of large amounts of cash to sell out to the likes of Live Nation etc and refused2 points

'Those guys' could have easily increased capacity year on year but have chosen not to. The numbers have increased very slightly in the last couple of years but not so that it's really noticable. I wouldn't begrudge anyone for making a decent living for putting on such a fantastic event. There are SO many arsehole companies out there across the spectrum of all the types of businesses that you care to name that make an absolute fortune without providing what Shambala provide. So, if they do pocket a few bob from it they 'kin deserve to. More power to their elbows.2 points

My favourite clue so far was Descartes. It was pretty obviously Billie Eilish ("I think therefore I am"). But Justin Bieber was pretty easy (a picture that ranked first in Google for the term "love yourself"). I think these were pretty obvious ones, especially Descartes. Or when we we got the coordinates for Amsterdam which is again a quite well known hit of Nothing but Thieves. Or when we got the "bad idea" emojis - one of the biggest hit of Girl in Red. And that's just what I remember from last year. If it's good for a tons of bands and artists then why did I guess these? Pure luck, right? Give me a break... Anyway. This blue skies thingie is a tough one, we should find the exact term in Google that shows this image, or check the filename, that's a good start. Edit: leaks also told us first about the fact that they're changing the date of the festival.2 points

Probably not worth arguing with people who are transphobic, actually. Just ignore them and live. Protect trans kids, they really need it https://genderedintelligence.co.uk/support-us/donate https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/donate/ https://www.stonewallwasariot.co.uk/ ✌️🏳️⚧️2 points

Having just got back from a lovely Shambala, can we have a discussion about child wagons? I know anything related to parenting gets peoples hackles up (don’t get me started on kids not wearing hearing protection) but I’m genuinely curious to see what people think about it. There used to be the odd one, maybe a few prams, but generally children were carried or free range, but now it seems everyone has an 8ft long metal charriot for moving their little ones around in. Some people even went so far as to ‘wall off’ a section of the main stage crowd to defend their picnic blankets, during Saturday nights headliners. It was like a scene out of an old western movie where they made a wagon circle to fight off some rival gang. I love seeing kids having a good time at festivals, and I don’t want this to be an anti child rant, but perhaps it’s time for a bit of an étiqueté guide or a max size? No wagons past a certain point? Even fairy lights as a minimum would be a good start to stop people walking into abandoned black metal boxy ones in the middle of the night.1 point

re: Time to leave the Dystopian feel. they could keep it in, but hide it rather than shout it in your face. I recon extreme super happy venues, but in the style of 1984 - where you have to enjoy yourself, would keep everyone pleased even make fun of everyone being a tourist and make the whole place like huge nightmare ikea - but happy of course (not far from the present system) and obviosly play kylie minogue / SAW music :o)1 point

Not a band, but it's been 30 years since Billy Joel recorded an album and yet he has toured constantly since. There was a 'classical' album 22 years ago but he didn't play on it. GNR took 17 years to deliver Chinese Democracy. That was 15 years ago...1 point

Glastonbury shouldn't go meatless as a "political statement", they should do it for: the sake of the planet, the welfare of animals and the health of participants. Knowing the true ethos of Shambala this will be why their doing it, not for political reasons or to look good.1 point

My favourite thing about him. And that's not to play down his achievements but I do like the fact he just can't be arsed with all the media stuff and makes no attempt to hide it.1 point

Sorry, but what what does this even mean? The people who run Glastonbury are tasked with trying to retain its status as a global icon; it’s probably the most famous music festival in the world. This will not be achieved by putting more Steely Dan on.1 point

I’m no edgy zoomer but some parts of this thread do read like the yer dad’s letter to the Daily Mail… Glasto doesn’t give a hoot about which changes would sell more/ less tickets, they’ve got that part on lock. Their brand equity comes from being one of the most iconic, visionary, and pathbreaking examples of emergent culture in the world. If they want to stay on the cutting edge then things like a more contemporary genre-balance, going meatless as a political statement, or incorporating narrative elements like BT should be in the conversation.1 point

Probably the same issue we have with DJs, but worse as the full line up is never actually announced anywhere. Some stalls are national award-winning street food vendors. Others are... not. And there's no easy way to tell the difference.1 point

Old system: payment made at point of ordering tickets and payment must be successful before tickets are confirmed System used for last resale: order process did not require immediate payment, payment was made via a link sent after tickets were secured. If payment was not made, tickets were cancelled.1 point

I’ve done both primavera and madcool the last two years. This is a piece of cake . Arcade Fire and Foals were unreal.1 point

Love em or hate them the 75 are currently the biggest band in the UK at this time and deserve to headline Glastonbury, they have earned it. Matty and the rest of the band entertain and that's what it's all about. Lucky to be seeing them in Tampa in October whilst on holiday.1 point

But there was a full line up for 2020, the guy gave us hints and names before they were announced. I personally am so happy he's in here because the guessing game is pretty fun while waiting for the next edition. You can believe whatever you want but let's not put others down because of it. Thanks.1 point

As in Olivia Rodrigo in the tent? That would be absolute carnage, and not in a safe way.1 point

System of a Down are also at 18 years. Grace Jones, Blue Oyster Cult, Pixies, the Who & the Eagles have all gone longer between releases in the past too. (Though granted the later 3 did all have hiatuses/break ups at some point).1 point

SEC capacity is 40,000 (IICON is 15k on its own) + Silver Hayes + Arcadia + Glade. I understand this is all hypothetical but your numbers are way out - half the festival is electronic music, which I guess what you’re meaning by dance. That’s before you even account for headliners like Chems/Prodigy etc1 point

I don’t know Fred is one of them, but I’ve seen it before with a few other acts where they have a massive summer and their price is hiked and Boomtown deem it not cost effective. Fred might want to play the festival, or someone he knows might tell him how great it is, and that might make it workable, but otherwise I think Fred will be too expensive now. in terms of a name that Boomtown nearly booked before they had a “golden” summer and price skyrocketed, one of them subbed Glastonbury this summer……1 point

I think if I had to choose one Band to get to Victorious if they are still going then would be Pulp! fit the bill perfectly for a sunday night closer1 point

Chains of adults 30 long holding hands and barging through crowds is a lot more annoying than a few buggies.1 point

Don Broco are absolutely fine outdoors but the thing is that the atmosphere in a tent would have been even better. Carti in a tent would genuinely cause multiple deaths.1 point
-
Playboi Carti in a tent would be astroworld 2.0 You've also put him against Travis Scott??? lol Don Broco and Bicep are crap in sunlight for 2 completely different reasons - bicep need the dark for their show whereas don broco school leavers don't care about so its half empty1 point

Was genuinely a really tough decision to go to Elton, the only thing that solved the clash and finialised the decision to go to Elton was that we were seeing Rudimental, and Venbee, on the same stage and day at Splendour Festival a few weeks later. That Rudimental set at Splendour is still in my top 5 sets of 4 festivals this year!!! Rubbish weather, tiny festival, but they ALWAYS bring the party, I bet their Glasto set was great fun to be at, regardless of crowd size!!!1 point

What were those "very strong" hints which could not mean a couple bands? I think when some posters tried to figure out the line-up by searching the tour dates and festivals close to the date of Sziget was much more fruitful, and guessed much more bands correctly. Ive posted 5 times, thats true. And whats wrong with that? At least im not trying to appear important but i like to read what others think of might be the line-up,a lot of times they were right, just by common sense.-1 points

Though I will say with respect to food, much like I've touched on before with other non-music areas like T&C, the festival *is* starting to fall behind a little bit on the street food element. It's another area where the festival was a market leader in the early/mid 2000s, but didn't move with the times and is starting to be left behind a bit. (And that's why I'd object to any silly marketing like going meatless - I'd rather they put the effort into becoming a leader in the space again - maybe let a group that run street food events curate a market area or something if they no longer have the expertise in-house)-1 points
