Glasto 25 future headliner?

I think we are approaching an strange era for headliners.

The older generation, ie, Springsteen and Neil and Stevie Wonder etc are nearing the end of their runs.  Alive or not, they won't be up for headlining for very long.  And the Gen-Xers below them, many of the biggest rockers and hip hop artists died prematurely (soundgarden, nirvana, biggie, tupac) or just dont have the relevance to headline something like glastonbury (breeders, smashing pumpkins)   I can think of very few - Pearl Jam, Green Day, Oasis, Jayz, maybe Mariah Carey - that could headline.

So we are looking at the younger artists to step up, which is fantastic in so many ways, but maybe too soon for a lot of them.  Sza, for example.

The older generation won't be around for much longer as you say, but there are still acts from the 80s/90s that can headline as you (and someone else) said with bands like Green Day, Foo Fighters, Radiohead, Oasis, Blur, Pulp and some of these may achieve legendary status in time.

There are also the bands from the 2000s that are still selling out stadiums and could headline like Arctic Monkeys, The Killers, Muse etc.

There are still a few legends around that will be around long enough that they can headline in the next 5-10 years such as Queen, Madonna, Stevie Wonder combined with some megastars like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

And of course, you will always get new bands and artists coming through and that will always be the case.

Plus Coldplay have at least another 15 headline performances in them.

When i created this thread I thought about gathering this data so I'm delighted to see that you have done so. Fantastic work.

The obvious thing is more often than not someone on the bill does go on yo headline

I also imagine back at the time it was hard to pinpoint some of them as future headliners. Doubt anyone saw Dua in the tentin 2016 and thought she'd headline next time she played. But then she had that massive second album.

Potentially means a realistic guess for this question might be someone like Lola Young.

Rather than names that are higher up the bill

I think Charli & Deochii are the most obvious ones with potential currently that are on the line up this year personally but definitely no guarantee at this point in their careers, and as mentioned above no way anyone apart from proper hardcore fans seen Dua Lipa in previous years and thought oh yeah future pyramid headliner... Not much else jumps out at me as yeah they'll end up absolutely massive superstars. As has been mentioned Raye seems to be getting pushed hard by the fest and has cross generational appeal but unsure she'd ever really become big enough.

It's already a theme but I imagine it will continue over the next decade or so due to the lack of bands that have made it big since the mid 00s basically that it's a lot more solo acts (pop, rap/grime, singer/songwriters) Obvious ones that haven't done it yet being the likes of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Eminem, Dr Dre??, Snoop?? etc. The bands will become the nostalgia/legend headliners Oasis, Blur, Pulp, The Killers, Muse, Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys etc. I know this will be unpopular as I've seen some of the feedback on them headlining elsewhere but think The Strokes potentially at some point fit into this category too. The way the mainstream is now/where it seems to be heading potentially we end up with some electronic stuff headlining? not sure it can be considered mainstream/crossover but the likes of Bicep for example (if Moby & the chems managed it in the past I don't see why this couldn't end up happening) Also waaay down the line Barry Can't Swim (Who is currently around where bicep were back in the early 2010s) Confidence Man I could maybe see if they manage to keep up the momentum of the last few years.

Pretty clear that building a relationship with the festival works! Playing well received sets lower down the bill over the years has definitely translated into headline slots for some (for others like Biffy, Elbow, Foals, ALT-J etc, it hasn't but they'll likely enjoy elevated placings whenever they do come back around). Think "pop" (for want of a better term) artists that are riding the crest of a wave probably have a better chance of jumping straight to the top (If they are offered Chappell Roan for 2027, presume they would jump at the chance for example), but in terms of rockier acts, in recent years only Idles and Fontaines seem to have built their reputation at the festival to the point where they are in the headliner? discussion (and even I'm surprised at how well Fontaines are doing...delighted, but surprised...maybe even ahead of Idles in the headliner stakes at this stage). Don't see anyone obvious on this year's bill, but hey, what do I know! (lets' see how Wet Leg 2 goes, if it's well received, album turns out to be decent and another one on the horizon by 2027/8 then they possibly could as they definitely tapped into something last time around...were in danger of flogging it to death mind you so it's good they aren't just doing the same again, though I fear they may have waited a bit long to capitalise on their instant popularity...all that would be forgotten if the new album is a cracker though. What I've heard so far sounds reasonably promising).

I think if Charli was ever gonna headline, it would be this year. For the majority (with a couple of notable exceptions being Dua Lipa taking Other headline in 2020 and Sam Fender bumped up to Pyramid sub in 2022) taking a high up non-headliner slot can kinda kill off hopes.

Raye is definitely possible but also unsure if she'll surpass where she is at the moment. Could eat my words here though.

Doechii is a good call as she's on a very unpredictable trajectory.

Wet Leg & Inhaler's ceiling is probably somewhere in the region of 3rd down Pyramid.

As much as I love Biffy, their time to headline was somewhere around 2014-16, and it never quite happened.

Gracie Abrams is a weird one. I guess it's possible? But not convinced enough people buy the hype.

Given the commercial reaction to Catch These Fists I dont think Wet Leg will be climbing to the top of the totem pole any time soon.

Oh will definitely take more than that to elevate them them into the conversation. I'll be honest, I haven't really listened to their first album since that summer...it was a very fleeting thing, but they were insanely popular briefly so who knows, maybe they can capture it again.

Would love to see Wolf Alice, Inhaler or Wunderhorse make it in a few years. They seem to be on an upward trajectory.

Also FBS could possibly do it at some point. He’s been everywhere else!

I was wondering about Wolf Alice too.

Depends whether new album escalates them or plateaus that trajectory

How I see it for the names mentioned on this thread

Time has now passed

Biffy Clyro

Extremely unlikely

Little Simz

Wolf Alice

Wet Leg

Inhaler

Wunderhorse

CMAT

Self Esteem

In a good popularity spot currently but feel like they will soon be on the way down

Noah Kahan

Charli XCX

Some potential for next album to be a big hit
