How sure are we about SZA headlining the Pyramid? If I'm correct we only have 1 source pretending this, right?

I'm nog buying it. She has had a LOT of streams recently, but I suppose the vast majority of them comes from the US. She's really not well known in UK or Europe by the average music lover. Just look at the other festivals she's playing in Europe this summer: small ones (We Love Green, Primavera Porto) or mid-sized (Primavera Barcelona). Primavera festivals target a specific market of alternative music fans, a totally different approach than Glasto that targets a way bigger, more diverse audience.

Not only is she as a person/artist completely unknown to the average Brit/European, even her songs with >1 billion streams didn't have a lot of airplay on radio stations etc. (I'm Belgian, maybe in the UK she had more airplay).

She has 0 festival anthems. Looking at the previous years, that 's a big box to check to headline the Pyramid. Even Lana, who is also really big in terms of streaming and who is headlining other big European festivals, played the Other last year. And on top: for what I know SZA doesn't have a stunning live reputation.

So... I really doubt Emily has booked het for Pyramid closing act. Would be a perfect Other headliner, tho. And I'd take her over other rumours as KoL any day. But no, as long as there's no announcement, I don't believe this rumour. Field would be historically empty & BBC won't have a lot of viewers.

Great post. I'm agree, while i have heard some of her tracks,  pyramid headliner would seem strange.

Shoot me down if i am wrong here or if this has been mentioned previously - I heard that Coldplay play for Glasto for free - if true, would their fee then be given to someone like Madonna (if speculation was true, was demanding more money) would the Eavis' consider ?

still never heard of SZA

or any songs by her

First point is not true, you’ve heard of her on here

Second point - type her into whatever music platform you use and give her a listen. If you don’t use that, there are free vids on YouTube - educate yourself

Third point, can’t turn back time but you can move if that bothers you

Music is more accessible than ever...

At its most basic you could type 3 letters into a google search and click play on a youtube vid????

What normally happens with you got some kind of specialist music butler that comes and plays you the tunes that he thinks you should know?

I really can't be bothered to listen to her to be honest, not to say she would be a bad booking, she might be great .  New blood on the main stages is always welcome.

I  just can't be bothered. If she did the type of music i like  I would have heard of her . I don't think she does a lot of drum and bass.

I am not hating on her , just stating facts. until her name, never heard of her .

How much more popular was Billie Eilish when she played in 2022, versus SZA these days? Eilish obviously had that James Bond song that the casuals could have known her from, but she didn't even play that during the show.

purely based off of my now 10 year old daughter - 8 then - Eillish is/was way more popular than SZA - but htat is a very small frame of refrence

Bad Guy was everywhere when she released that. Can't think of a SZA song with the same airtime on mainstream radio

Billie Eilish had a huge following from the younger generation and several commercial hits. She'd also smashed the Other Stage a year or two earlier to earn a headline spot on the Pyramid.

even i had heard her music

She was also probably their second choice to headline after Taylor declined.

We know SZA wasn't even that - more like 4th at the minimum.

(and I don't intend that as a criticism btw)

I doubt Billie was 2nd choice tbh. She was huge and first to be announced too I think.

SZA it seems was 4th I agree: Madonna- Stevie- O Rod then her.

Would agree with most of what you say, but at this point, she's one of the only possibilities left.

Three weeks ago most people were predicting her for Other headliner. Now lots of people have decided that she's actually big enough to headline. Nothing about SZA has changed, just the possibilities of who could headline has changed, so there's some mental gymnastics going on to justify it.

She's certainly big in the US which accounts for her massive streaming numbers, and has a large fanbase in the UK, but neither are well represented at Glastonbury.

I'd say it's quite possible that she was originally penciled in as Other stage headliner, and after Madonna and Stevie Wonder fell through, they're bumping her up to headliner.

It's a weak headliner, and unless the demographics of Glastonbury have significantly changed this year, it's going to be a very small Pyramid headliner crowd, but at this stage, it's most likely that she's headlining.

I'm sure there'll be criticism from a huge amount of people given that she isn't a big name, but Emily can point towards giving a new act (especially a female POC) a leg up to headliner status, and get good PR.

Considering Macca and Kendrick both got rebooked from 2020 I'd be massively surprised if there hadn't been some level of reach out to Taylor as well prior to looking at other options

Aw yeah good point. Either way Billie would have headlined within a couple years of that I imagine

i still cant believe sza would headline the pyramid... its a big leap of faith by the festival. a brave one. got to applaud them.

also if she can headline with a such low tempo music for the most part, then that should open up avenues for other music to headline... which i dont really mind. i always thought acts like bon iver, frank ocean, tame impala were too slow for the pyramid... maybe theres a chance in the future... i mean at some point we have to start taking a chance on new headline acts.

we cant complain about coldplay and then complain that new acts "arent big enough" etc.
