Radiohead bore the fuck out of me ! I have seen them twice due to my best mate being a super fan and both times they have played Creep ! The only saving grace

At the risk of appearing to be a Radiohead bore  (which I am certainly not) i think that 1997 is the only time they have played Creep at Glastonbury. Certainly not in 2003 not 2011 and I don't think Thom did in 2009 (?) either

I stand back and prepare to be blasted from those with better memories or commitment to Radiohead but not on my memory anyway!

That Thom and Johnny set in 2010 remains one of my favourite ever gigs. Perfect weather, sun was just starting to set. Met some mates from back home. Probably my 1st experience of a secret set at Glastonbury and it was one of the big reasons why I began to think that Glastonbury was very much for me.

Secret sets up the park can still work if its kept secret the Radiohead one was broadcast everywhere couple that with the mud and it was very dangerous.

SLAYYYYEEEERERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Imagine the reaction, crowd expecting some of the normal chilled park stage stuff......suddenly a double bass drum comes out, then the rest of the `obvious metal` gear (stacks of marshalls etc)....then it goes dark....wheres the band?....and then the intro to reign in blood starts up.........mate if I heard that intro drum beat anywhere on the site I would take off running for the stage it was coming from no matter how fucked id be when I got there.

I'm there!

1 was at I believe V, maybe 2006 ? The other was the park in Glasto in 2010 again I think.

1. This is old news now (That NME interview that your article linked from was released 11 days ago)

2. There's already an existing topic on this:

Exactly.

And more to the point, there's precisely f*ck all chance of there being secret sets in the Park. MDC raised their concerns about the H&S considerations after Pulp/Radiohead and there hasn't been another secret set up there since. That isn't about to change. It's a no go for secret sets up there simply because of the steep hill - any amount of rain and it'll have the slippery conditions that had MDC so worried in the first place. Since they can't plan for the weather they can't plan to put a secret set up there. Even rumours of a secret set have drawn big crowds.

Not to mention that the article simply states there will secret sets to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Park, not that there will be secret sets in the Park. Which, of course, there won't.

This is a silly post, there is no reason to celebrate 10 years of The Park but not be playing The Park, it's not going to be anyone of the size that Radiohead and Pulp no.

2011 was my first Glastonbury, and I was front and centre for both the Radiohead and Pulp sets (fortunately there were bands I wanted to see on the Park just before both of them).

They pretty much cemented in my mind straight away that Glastonbury is the best festival in the world, and ruined every other festival I went to before or since.

So obviously I would fully welcome the secret sets making a comeback, health and safety be damned :P

One of the daftest things I've read on eFests for a while.  And I'm on here a lot!

I can pretty much guarantee there won't be more secret sets celebrating The Park outside The Park than in The Park.  Especially considering there are always some secret sets in The Park.  Remember The Park is an area, not a stage.

Come on guys.

It's quite simple - Emily has said there will be secret sets celebrating the Park, but nothing about those sets being in the Park. There hasn't been one single secret set as far as I know in the Park since Pulp/Radiohead when MDC raised severe concerns about the safety of a set up there. Not one. There have been plenty of rumours like Chemical Brothers at the Stonebridge or the various rumours for the Park early finish on the Sunday, but none have come to pass even though big crowds have been drawn to the area. And that's the point.

MDC are worried on H&S grounds about repeat scenes of Pulp/Radiohead. Experience shows that  large crowds will gather even on the basis of a rumour. That means you could put an unannounced set by Jock Strap and the Two Swingers up there and still find you've got a situation which will have MDC having kittens. Especially since Emily has made this somewhat ambiguous declaration inferring  there will some secret sets there.

It's not going to happen.

Fatboy Slim played f*cking everywhere in 2015. And every other year.

Actually I could see one scenario or a secret set in the Park - an early morning start. Nothing to cause suspicion on the timetable, and at a time when most will be queuing for the loos. Anything else is a no go*.

*I'm willing to put money on this, a la Kalifire. If there is a secret set on at the Park in 2017 I'll buy everyone who was there a pint at Glasto in 2018.

Tell you what, if there's been no secret sets in the whole area by 18:00 on Sunday, I'll buy you a two pints from Stonebridge. And a chaser.

It's not going to be Pulp/Radiohead scale, I agree.  But there will be secret sets there.  And more than last year.

I wasn't there last year - what happened?

It's not just the size of the band that matters, as the mere existence of a rumour draws big crowds. I was there for the Chems and whoever the hell it was supposed to be the first year they closed the Park early on Sunday. For me, it just means that if there's an 'official' confirmation of secret sets in the Park they're not happening.

I seen a Fiat 500 in Aberdeen the other day with a Slayer sticker in the back window. If there was ever a less suited car...

I misspoke saying last year. I meant to say any time since Pulp, although there's always something going on up there - at The Crow's nest if nothing else.  So the bet is  - someone bigger than any act since Pulp, with Fatboy excepted, since he could turn up literally anywhere on site.  I would be only mildly surprised if I found him in my pop-up tent.

I have a suspicion that knowing what they do about modern social media, they're planning to shut The Park area, including the hill and will staff accordingly for a large surge in traffic.  In fact it wouldn't surprise me if they try to block off some of the other paths leading to the area.

Actually the Crows Nest is a fair shout, as is the Rabbit Hole (another one that regularly puts on secret sets). I saw the Blockheads in there and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's that I just can't see how they could possibly put on another big act when there have been huge crowds for nothing more than a rumour. They tried closing off the field for both Pulp and Radiohead head, and whilst it must have deterred some plenty more just ignored the security and walked in from the top of the field. Now Emily has raised the specter of a secret set I can't see that anything big will happen up there. Another secret set by the Egg in the Rabbi Hole perhaps?
