I'm tempted, at this juncture,  to say something profound and logical about Taylor Swift but it would be so boring and unoriginal that you would just sigh and make withering comments

To be fair even if it was interesting and original we'd still all sigh and make withering comments.

Based on what? What just happened?

nothing just happened. he's always seemed like the most likely option imo, and as the headliner pool gets thinner with others being taken out of the running for whatever reason, he remains as likely as ever. i said it'd be him earlier this year when he seemed like an obvious candidate. i said it'd be him after this years festival with The Sun saying the same. i still think it'll be him now

edit: sorry that comes off as very 'i told you so'. i'd just be shocked if he wasn't headlining next year :P

Sure, agree with this. But a new "Bets are off" thread?

May as well use this latest Ed thread to rant;

It's a fucking rubbish booking. I don't like Adele, I think she's absolutely rotten, but I can't argue that she's THE biggest singer in the world, and she's British. She's also female (in case you hadn't realised) which means that it was 100% the booking for the festival to make if she was up for it.

The only criteria of the above Ed satisfies is he's British. He's not at her level, there's other non-UK artists out there that are better than him (Kendrik, Frank Ocean). I agree 100% with addressing the gender imbalance within music so I'd rather have Beyonce, Swifty, even Rihanna than Ed.

Aye he's popular and sells records, but fuck him, he's nothing special.

And he looks like a ventriloquist dummy brought to life.

He's the biggest male singer in the UK, possibly world idk, but he's the one who has to get looked over to address gender imbalance rather than the two in the other slots?

He's a massive act, it's the right time to have him headline, just one worth getting over with really. Far from a rubbish booking anyway.

Firstly Hi!!!

Secondly: I have been reading these forums for just over 6 years now and maybe once or twice posted something (not with this profile) but now I think I am ready to join in.

Ed Sheeran: Worthy Headliner....? I'd say more worthy than Arctic Monkeys 2007

Wow people on this site can be so incredibly stuck up their own arses. The way some of you talk, it's so cringeworthy to read sometimes.

You don't like him, millions of others do, get over it!

He writes his own stuff and plays his own instruments. Fair enough if you don't enjoy his music, but being personally unkind about someone because you're being a keyboard warrior is really lame and says much more about you lot than it does him.

Seriously, it's pathetic.

He's an artist who makes incredibly cynical music which- I think- is marketed towards the lowest common denominator- no different from Adele. It's no different from The Fray, or perhaps worse, Maroon 5, only much more basic. Millions might like him, but millions also don't. Personally, I think he releases some of the most turgid music I've ever heard. I saw him at a Festival in Austria a few years ago and started wondering whether time was slowing down on stopping it dragged on that much.

Arctic Monkeys had released a genre defining album which I believe was the fastest selling ever, and were just about to release their second album. I've never been a fan really but can't deny their place as figureheads of the mid-noughties indie-boom.

It's not about being a 'worthy' healiner, it's about being a suitable headliner. Ed Sheeran (and i'd say the same about Adele) is only suitable because he sells records and get airplay. There is nothing else, no stage presence, no mind blowing live show, no (as far as I'm concerned) massive list of classic songs, nothing like that to suggest he should even be considered to headline.

Which genre was that that, then?

Got no real views on E-Sheezle, but don't diss Adele, buddy.  Springsteen aside she's about the most charismatic live performer I've ever seen.

Charming little rant. But if he writes all his own stuff, why do multiple people get a writing credit for his songs?

Well?

I can't stand his music, but other than records, his main credential is the number of tickets he sold to Wembley. People seem to like seeing him play live to large crowds.

It's a big festival, I'm old. I'm not particularly bothered who is headlining, especially since I get Radiohead - who large swathes of the population find unlistenable. Seems fair.

Ed - He is fucking dire, but he isn't a repeat headliner, which for me is important.

I love Radiohead. I have always wanted to see them on the farm. I knkw its gunna have been 14 years since they played last, but 3 of the last 4 announced Headliners were Coldplay, Muse and Radiohead. I want the other 2 this year to be no repeats.

I'm not an Ed Sheeran fan and don't like his records at all but I did see him headline the Croissant Neuf Summer festival in 2011 and he was amazing.  He was still a teenager then but performed his own songs, on his own, and it was very clear he was going to be a major talent.  I think it's a shame his records are so over produced so I'd be interested to see him live again.

    • Tonight was a disgrace. There wasn't *that* much rain, and it wasn’t *that* windy. A festival of this size should be able to withstand some adverse weather without it bringing the whole circus to a standstill. And if it is true that part of a speaker on the Revolut stage fell…   As for the communication - announcing Massive Attack were playing at 12:30 and then nothing for over an hour while people waited in the rain. It’s laughable it really is.   If I said I’ll never come back again I’d be lying. The shambles of Barcelona 2022 and the disgrace of Madrid 2023 didn’t stop me, so this probably won’t either.   This festival gets so much wrong, but it is always saved by having such killer line-ups. It’s just a shame it treats the fans/customers/consumers like animals. Compare it to somewhere like Glastonbury and it’s worlds apart.
    • Yeah, I admit that a small part of me felt relieved when they announced that MA are canceled.. But on the positive side- got to see Florence Road afterall, and they were great
    • Glad I could take the €3 bus to Playa Catalunya! Hope y'all warm and dry up.
