You're not helping Padgey...

But if it is then I will actually end up coming in like Perry to make sure I can attend.  Love Baggy on the Thursday afternoon :)

I'll be there too Quark, it really kicks off the festival for me :)

I'm a northerner living in the south who doesn't mind a bit of Courteeners so will probably get ridiculed from all angles now!

Is it true Baggy Mondays at the Stonebridge Bar next year is for Northerners only, entrance to the tent is only allowed if you're wearing any Pretty Green clothing or a bucket hat to prove your Northern-ness!

There's a pretty green shop on carnaby street in london these days, so I'm afraid nasty southerners have easy access to the manchester uniform!

And in Brighton   But no matter how much they try to be like us they can never get the f***ing accent right!

Given the population of Manchester is two and a half million, only 21k is pretty abysmal really

Sadly nobody buys albums anymore.  We've had albums get to #1 this year on 10-15k in a week.  And there are 64 million people in the UK so THAT's pretty abysmal really.

Went to a gig in Brighton last night, and I have to say that the crowd was pretty sterile.  I mean, when I'm one of the only ones dancing you know it's bad.

Obviously fans and knew the songs, but lots of standing appreciating it.  Not the danciest (word?  maybe) of bands, but certainly enough to move your feet to.

Never really noticed it before.

That's the problem, Brighton is even further south than London so obviously the atmosphere at gigs is about 50 miles worse. You should only go to gigs in Berwick upon Tweed the atmosphere can never be beaten and even for a 'non dancer' band the crowd can't help but dance for at least a week ever either side of the gig.

Same here. I find it really odd that someone would like a band just because of where they come from. Makes no sense to me at all.

I understand it when it comes to football, because it's a tribal thing. But then again, half the idiots who like football dont even support the team where they are from. What is that all about??

There was a map on here before, of the UK, and it showed where all the "great" music (big white bands mainly) came from, This one I think. Notable the for massive number of omissions more than anything else I believe.

I don't give a flying fuck where any music came from. I've hopefully demonstrated that here.

Here's a band, not on the map (yet the Charlatans are ?), originally from 1978, Birmingham, Midlands. Those two facts carry no relevance whatsoever to your undoubted enjoyment of this.....

I've kind of (in an actual kind of a way) only looked at a few posts on this thread so may not be quite in the correct position to to make a comment. However, it's never stopped me before so don't see any reason why this should be any different. Are there (and I mean this) really people whose like of a band is influenced in some way by where that band comes from? It would be accurate to say that I've swerved a lot of music in my life, but even I (who doth loveth The X Factor) recognise that it's musical and lyrical genius that defines a band / artist etc

Never go to a gig in Cape Town!

In todays climate, there is absolutely no reason for a band not to break through without the need for what you would call home town support. The internet enables groups to get their music heard without go betweens in the media casting their approval on it first.

Yet that has not always been the case. Up until about the time of Oasis, bands built a local support by playing local gigs, word would spread and support grew. Then maybe a few plays of early tunes on local radio, followed by getting the local paper on board in support. By the time the national media would spare a few column inches, bands could have massive local support and be building a lot of hype. The Stone Roses were a perfect example of this. No one paid any attention to them for years outside Manchester (and for a time inside Manchester). Yet through local support and, quality tunes and a huge slice of luck they have ended up huge.

It shocks me a little how people on here seem so against and bewildered by. home team support. To an extent I can understand it with younger contributors to the forum but for people from my generation it is a bit strange to say the least.

In a way I understand what Liam Fray  is saying. Take this forum as an example. Over the last few years I have noticed an awful lot of derogatory comments about bands in north just because of where they originate from. Not once have I read any similar comments regarding bands in the south. For me personally I have had a lot of banter directed towards me because I am quite knowledgeable about the bands I grew up with and have posted about them quite a lot on here. The ironic thing is that I have one of the biggest and varied record collections on this forum and in regards to 95% of it, I have no idea who even made the records or where they came from.

As for The Courteeners, I have no particular affinity  for their brand of guitar pop. Yet I do not sneer or look down my nose at them getting huge crowds. I think fair play to all the people who have gone out to enjoy themselves.

Now there  is a little part of us deep inside that is a bit snobbish. Forums like this would not exist if we weren't. Sometimes though people are just far too blinkered though and set in their ways. Behaviour like that is not healthy.

Edit- Just to say, Madchester seems to take a lot of shit these days but lets just remember that was an invention of the southern based media who did not have a fucking clue at what was going on. That was a perfect example of the point Liam Fray is trying to make.

what on earth are you basing this humongous assumption on? Have you got spyware on your PC that search out every poster's house and immediately scans their cd collection and Spotify scrobbling lists, comparing it to yours?

Ill be honest now, it's hard to take any of your points seriously when you come out with that kind of bollocks.

The clue was in the word record. The 7" and 12" black and multi colured thigs that I have spent a lifetime dedicated to collecting.

Mate I am not going to go through posts and threads looking for comments. You can go search yourself. Go check Courtneeners threads for comments about their crowds. Have a look at ones about James, go look at threads about other stage opener and the shitty northern has been opener set, comments about the Manchester uniform of Pretty Green even though no one actually wears Pretty Green. How often have we seen the Kevin and Perry sketch posted over the years?? Then have a look at comments directed towards myself over the past 2 years which I take in good humour as I find funny.
