Yes, good point. Erdinger is one of my favourites cold and I think it should be ok warm but testing needed.....

So we arrive into Bristol Airport on Wednesday morning and were getting our mini bus to go to a supermarket. I want some decent ale or cider in cans. What supermarket should we head for?

There's  an asda in  bedminster which is probably most direct for your route.its not the biggest but it is a supermarket so has a bit of choice.

Bedminster Asda doesn't have a great range. I went in there last week and walked out with nothing.

Sainsbury's on Winterstoke Road may be an option for you, or Tesco at Brislington and you can then head down the A37 from there.

Was going to mention tesco but the traffic there is always horrendous but yeah you are right, the choices would probably be worth the grief. I feel I'm missing somewhere obvious to buy decent alcohol.

Just been down to Tesco and Punk IPA is on offer at £5 for 4 cans. Saw a few people said they liked it. Appears to be on offer til mid June.

if money is no object and you want decent booze it needs to be either a waitrose or a marks & spencers. For cider I would say waitrose is the best by quite a long way. Ale or craft cans it would be marks'. Having said that Mark's own cider is made by westons and is lovely.

otherwise i would just go for the largest one you can find as it will have more selection

oh and erdinger warm wouldn't be worth having for me. weiss beer requires to be served very very cold ideally in a pre chilled glass.

not to mention erdinger is the carling of wheat beers. 

a good UK bitter/ale will almost always be best for non chilled. if you have the luxury of chilled and can afford then "craft can" is the way to go. i have never really bothered taking lager as it is pointless if its not cold.

i've said before but old golden hen is a hop lover's dream, tastes great at whatever temperature

I'd say Tescos or Morrisons are better options for canned ales or craft beers in cans than Waitrose or M&S. The latter improving, but so are the big supermarkets, who have a better selection, as well as being significantly cheaper.

Any supermarket recommendations for someone that finds a lot of 'craft beer' too fizzy and and to over-hopped, I tend  to prefer lighter malts and hops such as Kent first gold rather than US citra that tends to be in everything these days.

My budget is £120 pounds a day on average but not too strict really. That includes transport between bristol airport and the festival so I'm prepared to splash out a bit to get decent drink. You can only really get shite lager in cans in Ireland so it'd be nice to treat myself. Thanks for the suggestions!

jesus. you will be able to afford anything you want from the bars on that budget. I will be trying to do the whole thing on £120

I know its not beer but Lidl's own cider is actually quite drinkable (couldnt speak for the pear version though).

You're shopping the wrong places - Dunnes, SuperValu and Tesco are have very good craft beers selections.

And if you're willing to shop online, O'Brien's do free delivery over €70 too.

Yep, although it's my local, Tesco Brislington on Callington Road beats Asda hands down. Plenty of choices of craft stuff in cans as well. In fact I'm off there now for a beer purchase before hitting Cornwall in the tent after I've been to the roundhouse Thursday evening. Just realised that's tomorrow!!!

Yep, the Rascals Ginger Porter in the Mixed Ales pack is superb also.. tried it at a Craft Fair in Dublin.

Not tried any of the other Rascals stuff but if it's half as good as the Ginger Porter, I'll be a happy man!

Dunnes, Supervalu and Tesco do have good craft beer/ale selections. But not in cans, at least in Galway anyway.

 

€108.40 for 41 small cans sounds like poor value to me compared to UK prices, no offence. Plus it wouldn't be enough for me either. We are also flying over so not really and option. I'll probably get our bus to go to tesco. There's 8 of us and we all need to get drink so it shouldn't be a problem.

It's always going to be more expensive to buy UK sourced beer in Ireland (Brewdog etc). But lots of good Irish suppliers (Rascals, Metalman etc) selling for about the same as you'd pay for Brewdog for in the UK. Works out at about under €2.65 a can... to be fair, you'll be paying that for those cans in Ireland no matter where you go. If you want cheaper than that here, you'll need to stick to likes of Diageo and their slabs.

But you're right in picking some up there to be honest... I went to a nearby Co-Op to Glasto last year and craft beer selection was fairly limited but definitely picking up some Thatchers this year. Cider selection in Ireland (bar Stonewells) is atrocious!

If I've converted that correctly that's £2 a can. You wouldn't get those particular beers (or a similar range) for that price here, it's a very good deal. Although you can get some craft cans for under £2 in the supermarkets as discussed above.

£2 a can for those beers is very decent: admittedly you COULD buy multipacks of carling/carlsberg/fosters/other horsepiss for more like £1 a can, but that's only vaguely palatable if it's extremely cold, and you're absolutely gasping. Don't be that desperate!
