It won't happen, as you say, but you could do what I do.. A cursory look at the lineup, forget most of it, crack on regardless.

So very neat you say that!! This is the first festival my Partner and I are pretty much giving this a try. Normally we line up a ton of artists we want to see and the like. We are listening to all the various artists but going to pay no mind to the time/stage splits and just going to go wherever the heart and ears are taking us. Earth Wind Fire, Sub Focus, Chvrches are probably the only 3 acts we are going to go out of our way to see and really Earth Wind Fire is the only act we are not missing for sure.

I feel as if The Libertines and The Strypes shouldn't count on that list, considering they replaced acts that were on the poster.

With that many acts already on the poster chances are 1-2 will drop out because of some reason or other before the festival, so will also get replaced. Last year one act just happened to be rather high profile.

Haha you do make fair points. At the same time when Foo Fighters did their secret act last year as just a random one off concert I kind of pictured it more like that. If you happened to be lucky enough to be hanging out and Radio Head jumps on stage it would blow your mind.

I went to The Park one year as I heard Pulp might be doing a secret slot, and it was fucking Radiohead so I left. Wasn't the only one either. You over-estimate the appeal of bands you like. The Pyramid field holds 80K I think? Which means even during packed headliners, more than half the site is elsewhere. You'd essentially get people stuck at the Pyramid all weekend worried they might miss something big. Plus if any bands wanted to do a secret set and surprise the hell out of people, they could. I'm sure The Crow's Nest, Strummerville or any of the smaller venues with more flexible programming would fit them in.

That's what a lot of people do but it's subtly different to what was being suggested - you can do that because you know when and where the three acts you really want to see are on. With no line-up you'd be worried you were going to be missing Chvrches. Or that your favourite band was playing on a different stage and you didn't know.

Everyone has their own way to enjoy the festival. There's as much merit in your method as there is in planning meticulously. Either way, there's a good time to be had by all.

Oh for sure and it is all fantasy! There are a million ways to do it right! Friends, dancing, music, poetry, activism, smiling etc. The only thing I have ever regretted doing at any festival is usually if I went to the tent too early or boozed myself up at an unsustainable rate which usually ends in the tent early. Radio Head has yet to show up for a secret act in my tent. :(

I remember my first ever Glasto. Tried to plan everything like clockwork and it almost felt forced and methodical when I think back to it. At the time I'm sure I enjoyed it but in m subsequent visits to the greatest place on earth, I haven't made any definite plans and had a much better time every year since.

I don't even go to see anyone prior to 5pm these days unless it's very special and unmissable. I'm more about the times between 6pm and 6am.

He means at Reading. I think he's also a bit confused about Daft Punk at Coachella too, which as far as I'm aware was not a secret in any way?

I don't like the "not announcing the lineup" idea because most bands are a bit rubbish and I really love music so I don't want to miss any of the good ones.

Foo Fighters secret set at Reading last year? Fairly certain that also didn't happen...

I heard it was Pulp to. Asked a middle aged man next to me if he had any ideas, he said it's Radiohead. I looked at him as if he was on drugs or something, he proceeds to tell me he's the drummer's dad. I like you and lots of others left disappointed.

I did get to see Pulp at the Park in the end and its one of my best gigs ever.

Well, you can't pretend you didn't know it was a verified source ;)

Correct.

Without meticulous planning, the festival would be only a fraction of the incredible experience that it is for me. It's purely based on your personality and outlook, but if you want to have it planned to fine detail, in order to see everything that you want to, then you can, and still have time for 'looseness'. I will schedule 10+ specific things per day and see them all, whilst still managing to bimble and bum around at random. It's easy when you have 23 or so hours per day at your disposal and you don't mind walking...!

I think I was thinking of Green Day at Reading a few years back. It was very much a post-midnight post.

Your enthusiasm is infectious on here and I'm glad things worked for you last year but I would point out that's not always possible due to (whisper it) weather. I think that's why I revise down my ambition somewhat in terms of how many things to see. I love a dash across site as much as anyone though, I'm so glad I managed to leg it from the stones to see the end of the family stone in silver hayes in 2013 for instance.

I cannot plan randomness, bimbling happens, when it happens. I cannot say when it will happen , or  when I will lose all my friends and end up chatting to hippies for six hours about the universe.

I just plan 4 - 5 people i want to see and the rest just happens as it happens

For me this seems to be the worst lineup for years

Epic fail.

It's a superb line-up with a fantastic depth in terms of genre, mixing respected veterans with upcoming acts. I think it's fair if you are not a fan of many of the acts, but there's very few here that you could safely argue are actually no good.

Oh agreed, Filthy.

It's true to say that, whilst I have done 'properly' horrific weather festivals (Green Man 2012 was...a challenge), I have obviously not experienced that in the context of the sheer size of Glastonbury and the distance between last year's sprint points.

However, my half full glass resolutely refuses to entertain the idea that what will be a militarily planned operation will be derailed in any way at all*.

What, you've never walked only as far as the Mandela, drunk too much and then woken up either next to the fire or ideally with a boot in it?

Or "Vodka day" on a truly grim day when it poured with rain continuously, so people around the camp weren't even leaving the tent, someone just arrived and made them drink shots to while away the day.

Don't tell me I don't know how to live ;)

You see, I'm such a tit, that I'd be squelching around the campsite, bashing two metal dustbin lids together, shouting for everyone to get up and out there. Don't they even know that there's some obscure Eastern European Electronica playing in one of Shangri-La's microvenues right now?!

Sheesh. Some people just don't try!

To be fair that does sound pretty cracking just sitting here in an office chair :D

It's a weird one for me this year. I can respect the line up so far, and why lots of people are excited for it, but it just doesn't quite do it for me. Combination of stuff i respect a lot but doesn't click with me, acts I've seen mulitple times before at their peak and acts I would like to see but are also at Primavera so takes a bit of the hype away. Been almost a decade since I've done Primavera and Glastonbury in the same year, but I can't remember there being as much cross over before (100% sure that i'm wrong on this). Hopefully they will have their usual awful scheduling and I will have to miss a lot!

Still super hyped for the full line up though, particularly the rest of West Holts and the Park and the breakdown of whats on at the Gully. Will have an amazing time regardless of the line up, and even from the first poster it's not the worst I've been to (2007 ;))
